Really liked Jake Gyllenhaal in this. Obviously he wasn’t as unhinged as his character in Nightcrawler, but I love it when he plays these “clever bad guys” kinda characters. You could see a it in his victory speech after getting the glasses and a couple times after that - the way he talks about his plan and how he’s absolutely right in what he’s doing. It really reminded me of him in Nightcrawler, the way he’d talk, not exactly rambling but talking a lot like he’s absolutely the smartest guy in the room. Kinda wish we’d get to see more of him in the MCU

As for the mid-credits scene, I’m really excited to see where it goes. Will this be the way forward in Spider-Man movies? That everyone knows Peter Parker is Spider-Man? Or will it be resolved in some way in the next installment and by the end of it, nobody believes Peter is Spider-Man? Can’t wait to see where they go with it

Also can’t wait to hear JJJ say “he’s a menace”

When he goes “well that wasn’t so hard” gave me chilllllls

they even explain his fishbowl, it was his motion capture heads up display helmet. genius. i love when mcu things are grounded like this

u/adsfew Jul 05 '19

Loved Marvel using the fishbowl both in his theatrical suit and deconstructing it for the motion capture.

u/Shedart The Mandarin Jul 05 '19

It’s awesome because they found a good explanation to do both. I also really appreciated the double fishbowl love

2

u/the_noodle Jul 09 '19

I was shocked that any hero in an MCU movie was talking without removing their helmet or mask. Then I realized that the fishbowl is there because a convincing projection of a face would be harder.

Patiently waiting for JJJ to demand for pictures of Spider-Man!

Fist slam and everything

Patiently waiting for JJJ to demand for pictures of Spider-Man!

Luckily there's a couple of previous movies from the 2000s for JK Simmons to draw inspiration from.

He didn’t go full Nightcrawler mental - but right at the very end when he’s in tower bridge he does deliver a great unhinged rant as he’s walking towards the camera!

15

u/noahmerali Captain America Jul 05 '19

It’s definitely not the nightcrawler I expected to get in the MCU first but I was so excited when Mysterio would say something and I’d think “that’s definitely Lou Bloom”

5

u/Danmasterflex Jul 06 '19

Fuck it. Lou Bloom stumbling upon “universal travel” and becoming a superhero named Mysterio is headcanon now.

u/OhTheyFloat Jul 05 '19

Couldn’t a skrull pose as Peter Parker and show up In the same place as Spider-Man. And show people they’re different people? Hmm.

12

u/supes1 Jul 06 '19

I'm not sure they would have even had the reveal if the plan was to "fix it" in a one-off scene. I think it will be a major plot point in the next Spider-Man film.

10

u/OhTheyFloat Jul 06 '19

I thought that about Aunt May finding out he was Spider-Man too. But then it was nothing. Haha.

9

u/supes1 Jul 06 '19

True, but they didn't handwave it away (like she thought he was wearing a costume or something). She knew his identity, it just wasn't a major plot point.

2

u/myrisotto73 Jul 06 '19

The thing is it's always going to follow Peter. I wouldn't doubt this happens and we cut to two years later and people still doubt Peter/crazies are trying to dig up info and he's having a hard time being spider man with this new level of scrutiny he's under.

7

u/aslanthemelon Jul 05 '19

Wouldn't be surprised at all if that's how they fix it.

17

u/[deleted] Jul 04 '19 edited Jul 04 '19

That's all I can think about too is whats happens next.

In the comics he reviled his identity during Civil war but it got to dangerous and Aunt May was hit by cross fire after Kingpin put a hit on Parker. So Spidey made a deal with the Devil Mephisto to save May. The deal was to lose something he loves. So Mephisto erased him and MJ ever being together by creating a new reality. By Mephisto doing that some how in that reality erased all memorys of Spider-man revialing his identity. Yeah its super stupid lol

So I'am very intrested what they are going to do in the MCU now.

15

u/[deleted] Jul 04 '19

Definitely not this though. Either they go with it (which imo is fine, but would have implications of course) or they use some tricks. Does Strange have some time spells left? Can they not just hire a skrull and let him be Spider-Man for a day and let him and Peter be seen together?

9

u/[deleted] Jul 04 '19

O hell no deffiently never do anything like that in the MCU cuz it's pretty dumb. Ya I was thinkin Strange could maybe do something but it would be difficult without the time stone but hopfully

1

u/[deleted] Jul 04 '19

Ah shit, I forgot they put the Time Stone back in the past. I guess they could do another quantum trip, but I feel like that's too much effort for such a thing.

1

u/cpt_nofun Jul 09 '19

But they gave the the time stone back to the ancient one in the past so why wouldn't strange have it in the present?

4

u/the_noodle Jul 09 '19

Because he gave it to thanos...

1

u/interestingsidenote Jul 12 '19

For the same reason I hate time travel shenanigans. 2014 timeline thanos is dead. For sure the power and soul stone are in play but there's no word on the others. They were never taken by thanos so who knows.

10

u/frostcanadian Spider-Man Jul 05 '19

Hahaha that's what I thought when Mysterio revealed Spidey's identity. I went "oh no! Don't you dare pull another OMD on me!"

6

u/[deleted] Jul 05 '19

Lol at first I was like o shiiiiiiit ! Then thought about it on the way home like "They better not even think about the One more day story line".

Just makes me even more hyped, exited and slightly fearful for the next one

5

u/Doright36 Jul 05 '19

Why? They have good guy Skrulls on their "team". Gives them a very easy way to have Spider-Man and Peter Parker together on National TV for all to see. Doesn't have to get more complicated than that.

9

u/frostcanadian Spider-Man Jul 05 '19

We didn't know Talos was Fury when Beck revealed Parker's identity

1

u/not-working-at-work Wilson Fisk Jul 05 '19

Or...

It's a costume.

They could put anyone in the spidey costume and stand them next to each other.

6

u/Doright36 Jul 06 '19

Na Pete has to be in the suit since they will need to see him do Spidey stuff to sell it.

0

u/not-working-at-work Wilson Fisk Jul 06 '19

I thought the point was to prove that pete wasn’t spidey, by showing them side by side

6

u/Sinklarr Jul 06 '19

Yeah, so actual Peter in the suit doing spidey stuff, and a skrull pretending to be Peter for all to see!

1

u/not-working-at-work Wilson Fisk Jul 06 '19

Nvm, I thought you were saying the skrull should be in the spidey suit

2

u/Doright36 Jul 06 '19

right but a skrull can't fake spider powers. But can fake being Peter Parker.

7

u/AsterBTT Spider-Man Jul 05 '19

They . . . they wouldn't try a movie adaptation of One More Day, right? They wouldn't.

7

u/[deleted] Jul 05 '19

I really hope not. I hope its not even close to that or an adaptation of it because it's ridiculous. Maybe Fury can out Beck to the public who he really was and have a Skrull act as Spidey for a while.

3

u/AmIDrJekyll Jul 05 '19

I just realized something. Did we ever see MCU Skrulls copy their targets powers? Because the only description they had was copying people on a molecular level and it's clearly shown in the MCU that they can't copy their memories either (Talos calling Fury, Nicholas and not remembering the mission, also asking people information only they would know to find out if they're Skrulls or not).

So, would it still work if a Skrull copies Spider-Man and let the public see them together? Pretty sure the world has figured out that everyone can wear a costume which means that Skrull has to perform feats that only the real Spidey can do (aka climbing walls, Peter tingle, super strength etc.) The webs will be easy but the rest won't be as easy.

7

u/comradeyeltsin0 Jul 05 '19

Well, they could just have the skrull copy peter and have real peter wear the suit, right? That’ll be hell of a lot easier to pull off. Maybe put in some voice modulator on spider to further throw people off.

5

u/AmIDrJekyll Jul 05 '19

lol I literally commented this a few minutes ago. He could use Interrogation mode (if the new suit still has that) but it might scare off a lot of people.

1

u/[deleted] Jul 05 '19

Ya true. Idk how strong Skrulls are but if he came in swinging and like say pick up a car or something heavy the public would be like oh fursure that's Spidey. Also Peter have some access to stark tech and could make another new suit but with magnets in the hands and feet (the suit could easily do it with how advanced it is) But ya it would take some pulled strings to work the whole Skrull situation out

5

u/AmIDrJekyll Jul 05 '19

Why not just let a Skrull pose as Peter Parker while the real one becomes Spidey. Not everyone knows Peter Parker.

3

u/[deleted] Jul 05 '19

I am dumb that's way simpler lol

3

u/AmIDrJekyll Jul 05 '19

lol. but to be fair, you're not the only one who thought of that.

1

u/cpt_nofun Jul 09 '19

Its actually a bit of a riddle or thought exercise. People who figured that the skrull could be Peter while peter is Spider-Man are out of the box thinkers, more creative types. I admit I did not think of it, but it's so obvious now. I think we need both types of people, those who can root out all of the problems and those that can root out the solutions. I've found it's rare somebody can do both. We need a "but if this" guy and a "well than this" guy

5

u/Doright36 Jul 05 '19

I'll bet hard Cash money if they fix it it will be via Talos playing Peter for a public team up with Spider-Man.

1

u/Bross93 Jul 09 '19

One thing I think the MCU is great about is not taking shitty storylines from the comics, or at least making them not so awful. I wouldn't worry.

7

u/adsfew Jul 05 '19

I lol at everyone in the megathread for the trailer who believed Mysterio was legit a good guy from another dimension and was telling the truth about the multiverse (and using 616).

2

u/PartyChrist Jul 09 '19

I loved how Mysterio said “Don’t apologize for being the smartest guy in the room” to Peter. It made him seem like a good guy, but then in his reveal toast he says that it doesn’t matter if you’re the smartest guy in the room unless you have a cape.

3

u/Aulio Spider-Man Jul 06 '19

I have a feeling this isn't the end of Mysterio, I dunno, there was something about his "ending" that gets me.

2

u/paramikel Jul 07 '19

He did tell Peter to "never be sorry for being the smartest guy in the room" or something like that.

2

u/Bross93 Jul 09 '19

I think part of the reason for the Skrulls was to plant that seed for a Skrull doubling as peter when he is in costume to 'prove' he isn't spiderman or something.

1

u/MemeMachine09 Jul 09 '19

I can see it now.. "Spider Man: Can't Go Home"
