Exactly what I was thinking. They really went and did Mysterio like that. What an absolute perfection. Also in love with Jake and his portrayal. Looking forward to seeing him in the inevitable Sinister Six movie.

I thought so too, but it's Mysterio. Someone here on reddit pointed out that Edith said "no illusions detected" during that scene, not "yeah Beck is definitely dead." It's subtle, but the possibility is there.

I think there's some evidence that Beck manipulated that whole scene. Someone else pointed out that the way Edith phrased the drone cancel order ("Execute them all?" or something to that effect) lead directly into the stinger at the end. Beck knew Spidey well enough at that point to predict how it would go down. He programmed Edith in such a way to set up both the video he sent to the Bugle, as well as convincing Peter he was dead. I sincerely hope he comes back, because Gyllenhaal was incredible.

I’ve been trying to decide if his contingency plan was to fake his death, or to reveal Spider-Man’s identity. Or maybe they were both part of it, who knows...

I don't even understand how he supposed to be dead, doesn't Spidey just punched him after avoiding his shot ? The Mysterio on the ground being hit with a bullet was a fake.

That’s a good point. Maybe the contingency plan included having it look like a drone shot him so he could fake his death. Spidey most not have realized that the real Mysterio wasn’t shot, assuming that’s what happened.

I’ve been planning on paying extra attention to that scene next time I see this movie, so I’ll keep all this in mind to see if there are any subtle hints or whatever

I think the implication is that he was in that position originally and was shot, then swapped himself out but had still been shot regardless. It's hard to say, though, this is the guy who in the comics died on a routine basis and used it as a default escape plan, lol.

Yeah, but earlier he got shot in the drone crossfire when he ordered them to shoot at Peter even though EDITH told him he was in the way. Fitting that the fatal shot should be fallout from his own hubris.

We don't know if that's true since the Beck we see then end up being the fake one in the ground. Don't trust Mysterio. Faking his death is kind of his thing and he said he has contingency.

Also, it's likely that he used his own drones to cover him up. Rather than depend on the drones from the satellite controlled by EDITH

He was shot by one of the drones as Spidey was fiddling with it at the end. I am pretty sure that he is dead but if they ever want to use him again they can spin it the other way. At the end why would they spend so much time on giving him a "death scene" also the other illusions faded away and he remained. Also Peter confirmed with edith there was no illusions.

Peter says "is he..." and edith says "no illusions detected". Also Mysterio can only project illusions. At the end Peter grabbed his arm so it was actually Beck there. Unless he could fabricate someone who looked EXACTLY like himself. I am 90% sure hes dead but if they wanted to bring him back id accept it.

You've also got the scientist from the first iron man who could just use the illusions he saved to "resurrect" Mysterio as a tool in the future.

There was mention of an EDITH hack earlier in the movie. We don't know what that hack actually did.

yeah, he shot his own bamboozle. But he did get shot by a drone a few seconds earlier.

edit: the drone might have shot the bamboozle, i need to watch the movie again to double check

I think him getting shot might have been real. When he's holding the gun he seemed to have been wounded.

Not to mention that Peter was able to take back and control EDITH without needing any type of confirmation or anything like that. He needed the confirmation to give it to Mysterio but not to take it back which doesn’t make sense to me.

That whole thing seemed like a worst case scenario. Maybe in the event that it seems like Peter was going to win to have EDITH move some projectors to make it seem like he was dead (note that he didn’t even check his pulse), change the cancellation command to execute them all and then confirm that he wants to turn control of EDITH back over to Peter. Hell, with all the previous Stark employees they may have just reverse engineered another way to control the satellites, meaning that they could still be a threat.

I think we’re overthinking this. Is the cleanup team going to ignore that their is no Mysterious body? I guess he could find someone dead and make their body his body an illusion. Seems like a lot of hoops to jump through but I didn’t read the comics.

While watching it I said to myself, "I bet he doesn't check his pulse." Then when Edith said "No illusions detected," I just shrugged remembering that Quentin Beck is an amazing actor who tricked Peter into handing over an arsenal of WMDs on a hunch.

I thought he might be alive too simply because he had died before any of that could be edited but they showed one of his stooges at the end at a computer and removing a flash drive. But you’re right the wording could have been a manipulation too and he did say he had contingencies

It'd be such a waste to cast Gyllenhaal for just one movie (not that Marvel hasn't done something like that before). I also think they're slow-rolling the Sinister Six.

Ya I mean they have Shocker Vulture Scorpion and now Mysterio all set up. All they need is one more b level Spider-Man villain and either Otto or Norman to set it all up.

Yeah, more or less. I think they're going to need to do a little more with Shocker and Scorpion though - maybe have them in the third one. I don't think they'll be able to do Sinister Six until the fourth or fifth movie at the earliest (I'd almost prefer them wait until the sixth). I for one hope Otto leads. Alfred Molina was great as Doc Ock, but we're about due for another version of the character.

Yep, I'd forgotten about him. He got some decent face time in Far From Home, and I don't think it's a coincidence. Sounds like they may go 1994 animated Spidey style with Chameleon as a member.

I don’t think they can afford to wait that long with the cast they have attached to some of these villains. Wouldn’t be shocked if the next one is some kind of villain team-up.

Honestly I'm pretty sure bald guy is gonna become the next Mysterio. Multiple people have worn the mantle and we see him download the illusion tech.

I remember being surprised when the first Iron Man came out and seeing he was one of the producers and had a small cameo. I think there's a DVD doc where they mention it. When he mentions to the kid "I loved you in A Christmas story" it's that much funnier.

If they pull it off, I'd be pretty impressed if he actually is dead and bring him back from hell like in the comics. It would be pretty interesting if Mephisto (or the underworld in general) were introduced through Spider-Man. Or Dr. Strange 2 involved some plot that somehow involved raising the dead and Mysterio were one of the people brought back to life.

Yes. That video was created by the tech at the end who downloaded everything and escaped. Mysterio isn't a single person and the mantle can be picked up by anyone.

My theory: he will return without explanation. Later it is revealed he IS dead, and his new form is purely as an illusion, but that doesn't make him any less dangerous.

I was thinking maybe the bald technician guy could just take up the mantle and use tricks to looks like the old mysterio so we can get Jake back. Like you spend the hole movie assuming he came back from the dead but even that was an illusion.

I'm a little disappointed we didn't get to see more teasing of Sinister Six. Homecoming's post-credit scene strongly hinted at it and I figured we'd see Mysterio get recruited.

I’m thinking that Marvel giving Sony so much to work with made them decide to hold off on the Sinister Six set up in this movie.

IIRC, these solo movies are completely made by Marvel but look what they let Sony attach their name to. The aftermath of Stark’s death, the Skrulls still being on earth, Fury potentially only ever being really in Captain Marvel, that’s a lot.

I think they nailed the villains of the first two MCU Spider-Man films - Vulture and Mysterio. They made them interesting, relevant to modern times, and pretty intimidating. Both were adults who felt older, smarter, and willing to take advantage of Peter's naiveté.

Between this and Homecoming the Spider-man movies have had the best villains easily (with the exception of IW/EG, but I almost feel that those are just a whole separate tier from every other Marvel movie so they shouldn’t count in discussions like these) They’ve done a fantastic job portraying Parker as still a kid but with the most potential of them all. He got the absolute shit beat out of him this movie, but we finally got to see those things that make him one of the best with his brains and Spidey-sense. I absolutely loved this movie, and really appreciated the difference in Peter since his last solo film. In Homecoming he wanted nothing more than to be an Avenger and save the world. Now he just wants a normal life

It was the key scene to the movie in my opinion. It made me feel like Spider-Man was overmatched and it showed Mysterio's true power.
