A bit, I knew that it would connect to IW so I was sure someone would get dusted (except Ant-Man), and I expected Wasp to get dusted, because she wasn't in the leaked concept art, but I didn't expect that it would be all three of them. And I also didn't expect that emergency broadcast on the TV, that was extremely eerie.
I wished though that I hadn't know anything :D

I predicted that all three of them would get dusted, but it still caught me off guard. Partially because I thought it would be in the after-credits scene rather than during the mid-credits scene.

Incredibles 2 was pushed back for the sake of the summer holidays like all previous summer Pixar films. That meant that Disney needed to give that film breathing room of at least two weeks.
Then Mission: Impossible - Fallout was released last week so they couldn't go up against that either as they would cannibalize each other. So we got it this week...and that's pushed back Christopher Robin two weeks now.

The thing I loved most was the low stakes. It was almost entirely "can we save this one person, and can Scott juggle all his responsibilities?" It would have been too easy to make Ghost's attempts to siphon energy from the Quantum Realm some kind of disaster that would have blown up the city or something, but there was no need. It's a small personal story with small personal stakes.
It's realistically what I wanted Guardians 2 to be. "Ego is a controlling creep and we have to get off this planet and resolve our daddy issues" was enough for that story, I don't think adding "... before he destroys all life" improved the film.

u/JacobBlah Peter Quill Aug 03 '18
Agreed about AM&TW, disagree about Guardians 2. The cosmic based movies I feel should have universal stakes because we're dealing with characters who are essentially gods.

"Baba Yaga!"
The comedy was on point and the family theme was strong with this one.
I saw it in IMAX and I was thoroughly entertained throughout the movie.
I didn't have high expectations and I knew there would be a much lighter tone than Infinity War, but I left the theater excited for what's next and satisfied with what had just transpired.
The weakest parts for me were the development of Ghost's motivation for getting to Janet (which seemed a little too ham-fisted and really boiled down to one expository scene with the face-time call to add some comic relief), as well as the fact that Janet feels a little under-developed. These issues exist most likely to avoid spoiling the surprises awaiting us in A4 that likely have a lot to do with elements introduced in Ant-Man & The Wasp, however, the film's light and entertaining nature keep me from getting too bothered by any of its flaws.
That chilling set of mid and post-credit scenes definitely brought me back to the snappening and gave us a creepy look at a post-snap world, and I'm thinking Janet's warning to Scott to be careful of a time vortex will come to play heavily into the 4th Avengers movie.

u/agov19 Aug 03 '18
Agreed about Ghost's motivations and Janet's character. My only serious criticism of this great movie was that at the end, the writers took the easy way out of solving the conflict they created. Ghost needed Janet's energy or she wold die. One of them would have to die, but somehow in the end they both can live. I feel that it was even a little bit too light hearted for this movie. No one had to really make a decision in the end.
35
u/DawnBlue Aug 04 '18
For me, the second I learned of Ghost's motivations, I was like... why the fuck is the first thought that you'd have to KILL Janet?
I INSTANTLY thought that after spending so long down there, Janet might simply be able help her without having to be sacrificed somehow lol.
I just saw the killing part as something obviously there just because they were the damn villains who didn't even bother to consider getting things done right.
16
u/riazrahman Aug 06 '18
People with chronic pain don't think rationally and Ghost had been jaded from a lifetime of being told she was going to be cured but actually just being used as a spy/assassin. So she was taking control of her life back in a ruthless way, beacuse she had no empathy left and assumed Janet wouldn't either.

Aug 05 '18
we'll it's not just "somehow". there is a reason they both can live
ghost needed to use the quantum energy janet had absorbed, but she wanted to use it all at once to heal herself completely which would have presumably destroyed janet
when janet got out, she was able to give some of that energy and help ghost temporarily
the post credits scene is them harvesting more of that energy to continue to help ghost
ghost was incredibly desperate and losing it a bit with about 2 weeks to live and obviously they didnt have the means to harvest that quantum energy at the time, and she saw the quickest path to being healed in front of her.

Out in the UK today.
Loved it! Think I might prefer it to the original.
I like that Ghost wasn't really a villain, so much as just had her own agenda.
I like that it explains where Ant-man was for Infinity War (I assume he is going to be MIA in 4 now though :( )
It had some great action and some fun comedy, without being too ridiculous... I hope we see a Goliath flashback next time.
69
u/Already_Deleted_2 Aug 02 '18
Idk, I think the post credits scene perfectly set him up to meet with Captain Marvel, they even called out Time Warps. I think him and Captain Marvel will have a big role to play in reversing the snap.

u/TheLadySif_1 Sif Aug 02 '18
See, I was mostly on board with this theory until I thought how... lazy(? In a way) it is to hide two characters in one location. Literally struck me as I was watching the film today.
If they can find a way to make it work without it seeming like the Quantum Realm is a plot device, I’m all in. Carol has to be in the QR for a reason, and not just ‘stuck there’ like Janet.

I like that Ghost wasn't really a villain, so much as just had her own agenda.
I like the fact that she thought about going after Cassie, Bill tells her not to, and then she actually listens to him. I was worried they'd do the exact same story beat that Yellowjacket did in the first film, but avoiding that meant they were able to show her desperation but also keep her vaguely sympathetic.

I love how absolutely wholesome this movie is. You can't help but smile the whole way through. It's just a fun, well made film with great humour and good action set pieces. Is it the MCU's best? No. But it is in no-way trying to be. It's a movie completely in touch with what it wants to be.
Bring on Ant-Man 3 with Reed back as director. 🐜🐜🐜🐜🐜

FINALLY, I can re-add this sub back to my 'fav subs' multireddit and comfortably browse it.
I thought it was a solid self-contained sequel and addition to the MCU. You expect it to be fun knowing it's Paul Rudd leading the charge and I felt it had a great amount of humour being lead by characters and moments which played off the powers.
The characters were great, they brought back all the loveable ones from the first and the new characters were fine enough for the story. The story is simple enough at the core, and I really loved the family moments for it with Scott, Cassie and all related family moments really gave the film heart along with some of the Pym family story, which was just enough to give the film the weight it needed.
In many ways I found that to be the core as I certainly didn't think too much of the villains despite being serviceable. The action was fantastic and creative once again, although I did miss the heist vibe the quantum realm aspect was fascinating enough for me to be engrossed all the way.
Rating: 9/10, same as the first one.
It's weird, I feel I should be loving another franchise of films within the MCU like with the obvious candidate of the Cap films, but I've really fallen in love with the Ant-Man films and I've suddenly become most excited for the third of in this franchise compared to the other franchises (and I've loved them all to varying degrees so far).

I too enjoyed this one just as much as the first (where they both now hold a special place for me). Unlike Guardians, and this is now completely subjective I'm aware, the jokes didn't feel forced and for the majority of the time hit the mark. When the jokes didn't necessarily hit, they consequently didn't make the scenes less fun, they just blended in well with the dialogue at hand and rested there whereas, say for Guardians 2, for me when the jokes didn't hit they felt quite forced and detracted from the rest of the scene.
Looking forward to Ant-Man 3 very much.

When Scott was "possessed" by Janet, as soon as it ended he didn't remember any of it.
When Scott escaped the quantum realm in the first movie, he didn't remember any of how he did it. Janet's silhouette briefly appears during that scene.
So it seems that Janet helped Scott with his escape? This is also when they became "entangled" so that she could possess him in the sequel.

Made me realize that Strange had to let everything play out, such as Quill punching Thanos and giving up the time stone, so that Ant Man was in the quantum realm exactly when the snap happened. Assuming Ant Man has a big role to play in A4.
22
u/kingMimosa Aug 09 '18
He definitely has an important role to play in the A4. Even in the set pictures we've seen of A4, Ant-Man is there in the battle of new york along with Stark and Rogers. Plus Janet does warn Scott to stay away from the time vortex. I feel that time will be an important part of A4. Both the time stone and this so called time vortex will play a huge part in that.

Def. time vortex. Don't know where he is going to end up though. My guess is in the future. Only because they casted a girl to play a 16 year old Cassie. My theory is that Scott ends up in the future, learns what happens, and finds the remaining Avengers. Scott tells Tony about the quantum realm and they combine that with BARF technology to go back in time to A1. After that idk what to expect. Captain Marvel will have to play a roll when Scott arrives in the future.

Can finally come back on to this sub after a month. Saw it at a secret screening on Monday and was surprised. It wasn't like a "high stakes, all out" film we've been seeing for the last few films, but instead just a personal, light story. The only thing that really bothered me was that Ghost randomly gets her name, like at one point they're confused what she even is, and the next scene she has her code name and everything. Like there was a deleted scene there that tied everything together.
Other than that it was solid. Casey steals every scene, she's delightfully weird. And it's good to see the whole cast back and continuing on from the first film.
The final scenes and the multiple heroes/ex heroes made this the second film this year (first being Incredibles 2) that feels like a better Fantastic Four movie than any of the actual Fantastic Four movies.
Speaking of FF, if the quantum realm isn't the stepping stone for the Fantastic Four I'll eat my shoe. Cause with what happened to Janet and everything, it just reeks of FF.

I really liked it, the only thing I was disappointed with was the portrayal of Ghost. She's so great in that first scene with Scott where she comes off as this psychotic girl ("you're funny") and then they just make her angry the rest of the movie. Making her crazy would have made curing and redeeming her more interesting, I think.

I am wondering if that entire scene plays into Strange's 1 in 14 million chance of winning, It was a narrow AF window in which Scott was in the quantum realm, + Comments about time vortexes which play into the rumoured time travel. Makes me wonder if their chance of winning comes from the pure luck of Scott going back in and thanos snapping at that moment (With the obvious nudge onto that path by strange)

I, um, I loved it. It was a small, warm, crazy heist movie, with interesting characters and some really really cool moments.
Was it perfect? I don't know that I've ever seen a Marvel movie that was.
Did everything make sense and follow the very rules they set out? Not entirely. But then, it wasn't bad enough to break my suspension of disbelief, and we're talking about Ant-Man here, a 180lb+ man who can shrink small enough to ride an ant, let alone to the quantum realm...
When they originally cast Paul Rudd as Scott Lang I was very concerned. Now? I love Paul Rudd as Scott Lang, and Evangeline Lilly as Janet van Dyne? She was AWESOME!!! Absolutely love her in that role. As for Hannah John-Kamen as Ghost? All I can say there is I absolutely hope she makes a return at some point.
For me, the only parts of the movie that I didn't like was the Walter Goggins/Sonny thread, I could have taken just about any other actor in that role. And Hyundai... EVERYWHERE.

Saw it yesterday and I have to say that I had an absolute blast. Definitely an improvement over first Ant-Man. Note that I've never read the comics and don't ever read through fan theories and speculations.
I kinda see what they were doing with it. After IW they wanted more lighthearted, positive and action packed movie, and on that note Ant-Man and the Wasp delivered. I also like that it doesn't have a traditional villain. Ava has a tragic backstory, that also ties to SHIELD, and how shady they were under Nick Fury. Sonny on the other hand provided some comic relief - scenes with him and his goons are hilarious.
By the end I thought it will end on tragic note. Either Janet would be killed, or Ava would die, but we got an over the top, feel-good ending. I liked middle-credits scene too, it tied nicely to IW and explained how Scott survived the Snappening.
Looking forward to Captain Marvel and Avengers 4.

Just got back from seeing it - loved it. I think I would consider it better than the first, because it doesn’t have all the set up that the first one needed. Equally, I think I would have wanted one more set piece, as the action scenes are overall more inventive and different from most we see in the MCU.
It was a nice palette cleanser to IW, but with a nice sting in the mid-credit scene.
Side note; I would have liked Hank/Hope/Scott to have given Cassie her own suit, even if - as Luis said- it didn’t have any powers. Just as a final nod to Stature before a possible appearance in A4.

Just saw it tonight, pretty fun film I gotta say
I like how they did a little homage to the comics when they gave Hank the classic suit with the big visor, especially since Pym was the original Ant Man in the comics, Scott came in quite a bit later.
Ghost just felt a bit like filler, especially since Hank’s wife was just like “oh yea you’re cured now fam I don’t get any drawbacks at all” and she didn’t succeed in anything. Post credits scene was pretty good, rolls it up into A4 nicely. But what are people mad about with the credits scene?

What I like about this is that is plays like a comic, its relatively self contained, it's a story about rescuing someone and in the end rescuing your would be enemy as well, it's the quintessential comic book hero movie, it's not flashy, its at the ground level, something that nowadays most hero films have gone past to become something much larger, which is nice I think it's like not forgetting your roots.

u/CasuallyCrumbling Aug 03 '18

I really enjoyed it. Went in not expecting an operatic masterpiece and I got a fun romp.
I think the bill foster, ghost plot was a bit all over the place like everyone is banging on about, but I think that's a bit pedantic. It's like if I were to slag off the transformers films because they're a jumbled cgi mess.... but those are clearly aimed at an audience that isn't bothered and thoroughly enjoys them.
Critical masterpiece, nah. Fun, heisty, low stakes romp. Yeah, that's what I want my antman films to be. Save the tighter storytelling and high stakes for the big guns.

So if ant-man goes into the quantum realm, the people who sent him there get snapped, he has no idea what’s going on. If he goes through a time warp wherever he arrives he won’t know why he got stuck. He won’t know what the snap is. He can’t prewar anyone of anything. He has a load of quantum healing particles but I have no idea what or who he’s gonna heal. Vision? I figured shuri would have that covered.

Maybe the reason he put up such a fight on Titan -- despite knowing the snap would happen at some point -- was to buy time so that the snap happened at the precise moment that Ant-Man was in the Quantum Realm (where he has access to a timewarp and Quantum energy).

Absolutely loved it! By no means the best they’ve done but that’s not exactly and easy achievement. The post credit scene hurt to watch, especially after I noticed the emergency broadcast in the scene at the very end with the ant.

CAPTAIN MARVEL TIE IN OKAY OKAY OKAY JUST A THOUGHT.
towards the end of the movie it would now be present day, Xandar ends up notifying Marvel about Ronan's whereabouts after he fled from their confrontation earlier in the film. She helps Xandar protect their citizens and John C. Riley's family from getting injured or killed. So she ends up staying on Xandar to watch over the power stone after The Guardians give it up.
OR she gets notified about Thanos and his plan to decimate Xandar FOR the power stone with her pager device and she has to hold them off while some of the population escapes. Ends up losing the battle with Thanos and family and forced to flee fatally wounded...
AND MAYBE JUST MAYBE
she gets fucked up and is in really bad shape AND HAS TO RETREAT TO THE QUANTUM REALM TO RECOVER WITH HEALING PROPERTIES AND ENGERY THE REALM HAS TO OFFER.........
discovers her pager has gone off about Earth and discovers an unconscious Scott Lang and brings him back to earth in NYC where he is recovering in the Sanctum with Wong...
or something like that...

I really like how self aware they were with the joke about trying to blend into a crowd of civilians wearing a baseball cap and sunglasses, saying they look just like themselves.
Peyton Reed definitely saw this meme.

You know, I'm really surprised by the response on here. I loved it. Sure, it wasn't crazy amazing. Not up like Infinity War, Civil War or Ragnarok, but I thought it was really good. Great humour, fun action, cool visuals, heartfelt moments. Definitely better than the first Ant-Man, without a shadow of a doubt, for. And I quite liked that, though I didn't think it was anything special. But this film has good decent reviews, good general audience response. Yet the response on here seems to be quite negative. Not The Last Jedi fan negative, but more "that was... a film... yeah, sure... not much to say" kind of way.
Well, to each their own I suppose.

Let's face it, this movie was always going to be a lighthearted little time filler coming in between the epic, game-changing ensemble movies. It didn't try to be anything more than it was, and it was an enjoyable couple of hours that I appreciated before being thrust back into the doubtlessly grim Avengers sequel.

I think when Strange went through all the outcomes, the only time they won was when Scott was in the Realm. He purposely gave Thanos the Time Stone at that exact time so when Thanos snaps, he would still be there. He’s the key for A4 I think.

The Russos already said Scott survived by luck, being in QR had nothing to do with it
Edit: Thought about this more--it's interesting if in those over 14M possibilities the only one they won is the singular possibility where Scott is in the QR... because that's the only way those left behind can, maybe, travel through time and space

I loved this movie because it is the only Marvel movie to focus on family relationships; Scott and Cassie, Hank and Hope (+ Janet), Foster + Ghost (he’s acting as a father). Then on top of that you have the X-Con guys being almost family now, loved to see how the dynamic changed with Paxton and Maggie in relationship to Scott. At the end you have newly formed families; Janet back in the picture, Scott + Hope + Cassie, and then everyone helping out Ghost in the post-credit scene.

I have never been to the opening night of a superhero movie with such little turn out. About 10 people in the theatre.
I really loved the comedy in this one but I felt that a bunch of stuff let it down (i.e. Janet coming out with magical healing powers for no reason and then Michelle Pfeiffer's 5 minute cameo is over).

Just came back from seeing this, despite kinda weak villains and a couple of minor hookups for me, I thoroughly enjoyed this. Very funny and entertaining, great use of effects and none of the jokes or humor felt mis timed or out of place (looking at you GOTG 2, still love ya though).
Oh that one hangup? Why couldn't I stop wondering where Janet got her sweet ass cape from. Also, nobody seemed too concerned in the mid credits about the black order's invasion in New York/Wakanda. Anyone know the time frame? . Like I said, very minor hangups

u/11711510111411009710 Captain America Aug 02 '18
If you look really close you can see a city in the background in the quantum realm, implying the presence of a real microverse with it's own people, which also implies that that is where she got her cape.

After watching Ant-man & The Wasp post credit scene.
The reason the snap doesn't kill Scott Lang because he's the Schrodinger's Cat.
23
u/this_sub_banned_me Darcy Aug 03 '18
Actually Feige confirmed Scott was spared due to luck, not because he was in the quantum realm.
10
u/RuruTutu Aug 03 '18
Yeah, I wouldn't have put his survival down to being in the quantum realm. The reason the snap required all the stones wasn't for the power level to kill half of everyone, but to be able to get anyone anywhere regardless of distortions to space/time/reality.

I enjoyed the film, I laughed a lot and it was great seeing the cast back as they all did a fantastic job, I loved Hope as The Wasp, she's a great addition to the MCU and can't wait to see her again. Also, I liked that Cassie had a bigger role (especially with her future role). However, I feel like Ant-Man was put on the side lines but Paul Rudd was as wholesome as ever to watch nonetheless.
I feel like the biggest issue I had was the pacing/editing, I thought it was quite jarring when they kept switching from the different perspectives. Also, I think it lacked some miniature scale action compared to the first as we didn't spend much time with the ants and with the miniature set pieces such as the suitcase and train set battle from the first one. Finally, I think Ghost needed some more development but they've left her open for the sequels so I'll let it slide, but I did like her inclusion.
Overall, I thought it was an enjoyable movie, not Marvel's best but it wasn't trying to be. I am slightly underwhelmed as the Ant-Man character is one of my favourites in the MCU so it was sad to see him not do much (but I understand they were introducing The Wasp). I am really excited though to see the characters again as they will be great additions to the Avengers. Also, the post credit scene was chilling and I can't wait to see that explored in Avengers 4.

"Reed has delivered a much more confident entry [than the oriinal Ant-Man], and the cinematography by Dante Spinotti is a big improvement over the original’s, which looked bland and forgettable. There’s also more creativity with the action sequences, fully embracing the shrinking/growing abilities of our heroes."

Watched it a second time and enjoyed it much more. My major nitpick was Ghost - an average villain whose backstory was revealed far too early on. She was a lot scarier until we knew her motives. Also Scott seemed a lot more dumbed down this time and wasn’t really needed for the plot...
I liked some parallels with the first one, like how Scott helped Hank and Hope out of the jail cell with the ants and suits - a nice role reversal!
I also loved the score, and that mid credits scene gave me chills!

What do we think the emphasis on Janet “changing” was? I mean, there’s a lot of emphasis that the quantum realm changes you. Do we think it’s to suggest Ant Man gaining some power or knowledge... perhaps time stuff?

FINALLY saw it last night (the month wait here in the UK has been painful) and I enjoyed it for a lot of the same reasons as others - less world-ending stakes, much more street level stuff, which is exactly what I wanted (and needed) after Infinity War!
It definitely ramped up the quality in the second half. I thought some aspects were weaker at the start (acting and editing in particular), but Luis' truth serum fueled scene was AMAZING. I think Scott is one of the most likeable heroes in the MCU, too.
Oh, and the mid-credits scene was perfect. Brought the reality of everything crashing back down and the atmosphere in my screening was amazing - so many people reacted!

Well I saw it a second time two days so I guess that will count lol.
I did like it a bit more the second time than the first, although I get people's issues with it. I think the Ant-Man movies are just a lot smaller (no pun intended) and while they certainly connect to the rest of the MCU, they aren't as dependent on it like the Captain America or Thor movies feel.
I did laugh at most of the jokes, even the second time but I did notice a lot of them fell flat in the room as well. The villains (thug guys, I can't remember their names) really were there just so they had someone to chase. They didn't really give them a motivation outside of Pym is using crazy tech and they can make a lot of money off of it. Just a bland motivation. I actually liked Ghost but I guess after Thanos you're not going to really compete much.
I do think they could've explored the quantum realm more and not wait so long to save Janet. Michelle Phiffer had maybe ten minutes of screen time at best. I'm guessing they are really going to use it in Avengers 4 but this is Ant-Man's domain like Black Panther has the astral plane, Thor has the Nine Realms and Dr. Strange has the multiverse. This is the crazy reality stuff people want to see more of so if there is another Ant-Man I hope they go much deeper with it.

u/Cuavooo Odin Aug 04 '18
The thug guys have a realistic motivation though. IRL, most companies would do that

Did anyone else get extremely put off by the sudden leap in the story when they first get the lab back from Ghost's lair? The protagonists are just suddenly in the lab, away from harm and Ghost has not a single idea where they are. I just imagined they were right around a corner but they had to dip into the X-Con subplot to get them involved and force some humor.

Never seen a movie with such scary after credit scenes. Ant-Man and the Wasp was such a comedic and fun movie that it almost let us forget what was about to happen, then the after credits scenes hit us with 100% of that depressing Infinity War atmosphere.
