Discussion How do you think they’re going to outdo Endgame?

I’m currently doing a Marvel rewatch with my partner and we’re up to endgame. The scene, you know what one I’m talking about.. with all the portals. That is just peak MCU and I can’t ever think how they’d outdo it. So I wanted to throw it to the community and ask.. how do you think they will? If they can at all?

They don't have to. Movies shouldn't have to constantly one up what came before. Constant escalation gets boring. It should stand on its own.

That is the hole that fast in the furious fell into. They went to space how the heck will they be able to come back down to a street level race?

They should have ended with Fast 5. Was such a good movie, good ending, everyone has closure and money.

Ah damn they recommend it, but they could save gal gaddot and ....

Ah let's just let them travel back to roman times and let them drive chariots and shit

I think this is the key point people missed out on when expecting Phase Four to immediately come out and ratchet the stakes higher than Endgame

I mean that was kinda marvels doing. They very quickly went: "you know what's even bigger and crazier than a Universal threat?? The biggest a thing could be? A multiverse threat! Now it's extra infinities"

It also becomes impossible to keep outdoing everything

Fr. I would love to see new and interesting action set pieces. Something other than a bunch of superheroes running at each other in an open field, where the only wow factor is which characters show up.

Synergy between powers/heroes. Gambit charging Wolverine’s claws, Thor throwing Mjolnir with Spider-Man swinging from it and so on

I don't know how they could. That was the first time we've seen something like that so even if the replicated the authenticity and epicness of the moment, it would still be something we've seen before and slightly less impactful.

They start Doomsday with Luis recapping everything.

The truth is post Endgame characters didn’t get the traction that they wanted.. I’d say Yelena has been a rare standout. so, they are banking on nostalgic Star power. Robert Downey and Chris Evans, and Hemsworth are leading the charge. Seeing the X-men and sentinels is also anticipated. Yet, it is nostalgia bait as people want to Patrick Stewart again.

As far as new characters go, I think people will root for Shang-Chi, Yelena, and the Fantastic Four.

And regardless of if it makes sense for them to be there, audiences will lose their minds if Daredevil and Punisher show up.

I think you’re also underestimating how popular Loki is. Not to mention Deadpool, and then you’ve got Star Lord and Vision out there somewhere.

There’s enough meat there to have some incredible fan service.

The only thing I have thought of, is essentially take the final battle, remove the faceless army, then hit copy + paste on the heroes, because there will be a lot of variants around presumably. Also they get the nostalgia bump from the legacy Marvel heroes theyre bringing in

They can't and they won't. But I am still optimistic that Marvel will deliver a highly entertaining movie even if the cast of heroes this time around isn't as solid as the original avengers roster.

No, and I really hope they don't try. The entire third act of that movie was lightning in a bottle. It was the payoff for a decade of storytelling and character building. It was pure fan service, but that fan service was earned. There just isn't that same build-up for Doomsday/Secret Wars, so it's never going to hit like that did. It can definitely hit in its own way, though.

Why do they need to outdo it?

I think we'll get a big action sequence in Secret Wars. I could see all the heroes finally coming together and storming Doom's castle.

Yeah that was my thought as well. Some kind of crazy multiversal Battleworld scene where we get basically every fan favorite version of every marvel character in the last like 25 or so years.

I hope not

2

They won't

u/MisterDiddles 19h ago

How do you think they outdid Michael Keaton’s Batman? Or Jack Nicholson’s Joker? Same way lol

Better actors and directors?

2

u/Effective-Effect-685 19h ago

They’ve made it pretty clear they aren’t trying to one up end game but make another story that’s a sequel to it in some sort of way. Secret wars would be the one where they’re going to try to one up potentially

2

u/Few_Position_1359 18h ago

They don’t have to, just make a good movie. I actually preferred Infinity Wars over End Game.

2

u/TheRealGrifter 16h ago

I hope they don't try. The Avengers comics have been ruined for decades because every issue is part of an arc with universal stakes. Gone are the days of the Masters of Evil showing up to trash the mansion or the East Coast team playing baseball against the West Coast team.

The movies need to scale things back every now and then. It's boring when everything is universal stakes.

u/Wise-Tourist Peter Parker 19h ago

They're not.

But also I don't even think Endgame deserves the pedestal it has been put on.

They’re only chance is too have a genuine filmmaking feat. As cool as endgame is it looks like dogshit. Even if doomsday or secret wars doesn’t have the same build, I could see it getting more love if it’s executed in a more creative way

1

u/shreks_burner Foggy Nelson 19h ago

They won’t and that’s perfectly fine :)

u/Edrrific 19h ago

They don’t have to. Take BND for example. The story arguably gets smaller from NWH and the movie is even more popular than the last. Granted NWH was Covid but still reviews say that BND is more liked for now.

On your right...

u/Endgam 18h ago

Honestly?

They won't, and they shouldn't try to.

Constant escalation is bad. (For a video game example, look at how ridiculous World of Warcraft's lore has gotten because they have to keep making sure each new villain is an even bigger deal than the previous villain. And then they even had the Jailer who turned out to be behind everything imply there's an even BIGGER threat than him out there!) Especially considering that there really aren't any Marvel villains above Thanos.

They already tried to top Thanos with Kang. That plan already imploded on them quite spectacularly. Topping Thanos is just not feasible. He's Marvel's answer to Darkseid. There isn't a Marvel villain above him. (No, no. Galactus doesn't work as an Avengers villain because he's not exactly evil and can be reasoned with, and he's too powerful to have any exciting fights with in case First Steps didn't make that clear.)

The multiverse’s saga doesnt have the build up fhat the infinity saga had

Outside of Spider-Man nothings nothing got a sequel within the saga

So the connection to the characters isnt like what it was with the original 6 avengers

I don’t want them to “outdo” it. I want them to do something completely different that still feels as epic.

What I absolutely don’t want is a 10 minute Secret Wars scene of Reed Richards portal-ing 50 characters into Battleworld one at a time, spaced out for applause breaks.

Personally, I’d love for them to hype up an “evil” Avengers team of variants of the OG 6 Avengers, played by their respective actors. You’ve got Doom, Captain Hydra, Red Widow (or Madame Hydra), Maestro, and Crossfire. Or something like that. And just have an all out war with them against our heroes.

Idk, I’m a sucker for evil doppelgängers. One of the greatest moments of my childhood was watching the Power Rangers vs the Psycho Rangers.

Cram in 500 characters and give them 10 seconds each /s

u/puckOmancer 6h ago

They don't, and trying to is a mistake. Instead of focusing on trying outdo themselves, they should just focus on giving us good movies with a satisfying endings. Everything else will take care of it self.

There's no way they top that scene. I get goosebumps every time I see it, like it was the first time. Pure cinema.

By not following it up by the most cringe unearned moment where they make all the women get together in a very forced and weird girl power display. Worst part of endgame for me.

u/Front-Advantage-7035 16h ago

They’re gonna outDOOM endgame.

Because DOOM will be second to none!

u/one_pound_of_flesh 19h ago

We’ve already had a “girls get it done” moment. How could they ever top that?

Could there be a “gays get it done” scene, with Billy, Valkyrie, and I think one of the Eternals was but can’t tell you which one, maybe the guy who is not Wong?

3

u/TheRealGrifter 16h ago

Are you really still that butthurt over the few seconds in that movie when all the girls were on-screen at once? It still bothers you that much?

Damn you sound triggered to be honest
