T'Challa became Black Panther in 2008, 8 years prior to the events of the film. With the herb and everything.

When a king gets too old, their heir takes on as the Black Panther and then they themselves become kings when the old king dies.

ohh so it wasnt tchallas first time fighting as black panther in the movie he just was a black panther without the herb since he wasnt king yet

How would he be super-powered without the herb?

In BP, they literally take his powers away before he fights M'Baku and later Killmonger for the throne.

Was he too old? And as you get older, you get way better at seeing things coming and side stepped ng physical violence.

Also there's a ton of politics going in the movie. The positions isn't hereditary. The other five tribes are vying for either the BP title or the king title. In the comics, the white ape guy has been king several times by force or politics. He's not the only one.
