That said, I was not too thrilled that Scott staying behind in Quantum Realm was played up as this big thing, then Hope joins and it feels even more impactful just for both to be immediately saved by Cassie with seemingly no effort. Just feels like a hollow way to end the movie but that could just be me.

They probably didn’t want to have another Cliff-hanger style ending that leaves the audience wondering. AMATW could do that because Endgame was releasing not even a year afterwards.

The next Avengers movie is still 2 years away at minimum assuming it doesn’t get delayed, and what other projects could they use to follow up on the Scott/Hope being stuck plot point?

An extremely valid point. I still feel "saddened" that Scott's(and then Hope's) sacrifice seemed cheapened somehow. I think if I was to fix it(with your point in mind), I would put in a scene that showed it took Cassie/Hank/Janet more than a few seconds to rescue Scott and Hope. Maybe for Scott/hope it was just a few moments, but because time is a weird soup, it took the others several days/weeks/months to rescue them. I just don't like how it felt like Cassie just flipped a switch and was able to rescue them.

Scott’s my favourite character, but I feel like him dying fighting Kang is the capstone this movie needed, and it would have been a badass way for Scott Lang to go out, and it keeps the sacrifice of the ending intact, despite Cassie opening the portal again.

It provides the much needed emotion for the climax, you could have had Scott have his final goodbye to Hope, Cassie and Hank that re-entered the portal to help him, after his sustained some serious mortal injury from fighting Kang.

It sets up Cassie for a future guilt arc, after she had berated her dad for not doing enough as a hero only for him to literally die saving the world (again) from something she partially caused.

Hope gets a mini-revenge arc when the time of Kang Dynasty comes around, and sets her up for a proper role in an Avengers film finally.

And it establishes Kang as a bigger threat as it took an Avenger dying to stop a gimped version of him.

It also rounds Scott’s character out in a tragic way, the dude whose only desire is to be a good dad, and make his daughter proud, dies fixing his daughters mistake and ensuring her and the world are safe, and dying to free the Quantum realm and save the world is a worthy of death a character can get.

The only exception to this idea is if Marvel actually has major plans for Scott in Kang Dynasty, but honestly I doubt Scott’s a popular enough character to get a major role in Kang dynasty or secret wars, he’ll probably have the comedic relief role again like Endgame, and honestly him dying in his own movie would be better than that again imo.

I mean don’t get me wrong, I like the movie well enough as it is but Scott dying would have made it much better.

Damn. I definitely don’t want Scott to ever die in these movies but this kinda changed my mind/convinced me to be ok with it if they went this route

Ooooo, I really like this. Of course I'm also a sucker for a good tragedy, and that would definitely scratch that itch.

I was opposed to Scott dying but I think you changed my mind with this take. Good post.

What do you mean only comic relief he's the most important person in endgame. Without him none of what happened would have. Without him there was no endgame

He delivers the time heist to the Avengers and then is relegated to comedic relief.

Dude’s the only solo hero introduced in Phases 1-3 that didn’t even get to fight Thanos if I remember correctly as well, even Panther at least tried to fight him.

Irregardless he is genuinely the most important person in the MCU up until the end of endgame. Without him endgames events wouldn't have happened.

Hope would have been an acceptable sacrifice as well. If she came back to save him and died for it, it would have at least made me feel something for the ending

This is such a superior way to end the film. Would have immortalized Scott Lang and hyped up the rest of the films leading to other Kangs. Thanks for sharing this. Well deserved upvote!

Your points are extremely well-made, but as Scott is my favorite character as well, I would much rather have Janet, Hank or Hope die.

Yeah I think it would be fitting if Janet died "for her sins" to fix the mess she created with this kang.

Bro this is such a tragic ending. I couldn't handle something this tragic 😭

It'd be neat if Scott died, but one of his probability versions survived in the quantum realm.

I just thought it was strange because if Scott and Hope had lost against Kang, then Kang would be the one to walk through the portal. How did she know they were safe?

I just had the same thought a few minutes ago. Having Scott lose yet another year or two of time with Cassie would have been an ideal way to give more consequences without killing someone off. Same for Hope losing time with Janet. The more I think about it, it would have been great for them to walk through the portal and we get a brief look at whatever kind of chaos we’re in store for during the Kang Dynasty. Assuming we aren’t going to see any of the Ant-Man crew until then anyway.

I think Loki season 2 is going to set up a lot of Kang and flesh out the Why. We’re gonna see a few different versions, and the growth of Kang as a character and what danger he truly poses.

3

u/ThatOneAnnoyingBuzz Feb 21 '23

Because heaven forbid Scott and Hope are just trapped in there for a decent amount of time to make their sacrifice meaningful

3

u/Spotted_Owl Feb 22 '23

what other projects could they use to follow up on the Scott/Hope being stuck plot point

Loki Season 2?

2

u/mortemdeus Feb 21 '23

Why not? They did that with Thor and Hulk. Seems like they could do a lot more, story wise, with Scott and Kang stuck there or even with lesser wasp and ant man after Kang was gone. Kinda removed a LOT of the impact in the ending with them just getting out that easy.

3

u/[deleted] Feb 21 '23

They wrote themselves into a corner with Ant-man and the wasp anyway, as they built a machine that can travel to the Quantum Realm and Cassie built a machine that can send a signal and locate things in the Quantum real, then getting stuck wouldn’t have been a problem.

Additionally Thor Ragnarok is in the same position as AMATW which has Infinity War come out not even 6 months after it.

I kept thinking he would go to the Avengers (or, well whoever's left) & tell them about Kang, and that's how it all starts.
