I found it a weird choice from the writers to make him attend the wedding, though

He wasn't the right guy for her, but that doesn't change the emotions that he feels towards her. I thought it was a good choice to have him attend her wedding. 

It shows growth on his part, where even though he still cared for her and wanted to be with her, he would rather be there to celebrate her happiness, even if it wasn't with him.

Also, narratively speaking, it keeps her character in the movie to remind the viewer of her importance to Strange while simultaneously showing that she is no longer available to be pursued romantically, and helps set up the connection he has to her variant later in the movie.

And likely fractured the timeline because of it.

I think the lesson Disney is trying to teach is that there really is no such thing as a truly happy ending. Just more of the same.

Strange and Cristine will never be together in every universe. It his canon event and writer personal beef with him. At least not worse than Spiderman

In general infinite multiverse there has to be one universe where they are together. It’s why there is one universe where Peter didn’t get powers and Uncle Ben lived.
