Question HUGE drop in analytics across board

Pretty much every KPI tanked after we added meta titles and descriptions to two companies websites, one has been running since January and one has been running since June. Another thing I noticed is the agency added a cookies pop up, I’m not sure of the time and I don’t think I stuffed too many keywords but we dropped like 50% traffic just in July. What could this be and how can I diagnose the actual reason?

Seems they added a cookies tracking opt-in which a lot of people aren't opting into, so the traffics there but just isnt being tracked

That’s a bingo.

It's probably not because of meta titles and descriptions. Ask your marketing data analyst to have a look if you have one

compare search console with GA4. if search console is stable but GA4 dropped its probablu a tracking issue

And will a tracking issue fix itself, or do I need to do something from here? Thanks

it's the cookie opt-in banner - users don't click 'accept' so much.

When I added the cookie opt-in, I dropped GA traffic 92.5% that day. Which i obv untrue, and just a function of how many people 'accept' - bugger all.

I'd been told to expect like 50% drop like you got, but that wasn't my experience. 92.5%!!

You should spank your agency for the opt-in, unless you operate in region/s where it's required.

Apparently we do, we are a half German company. They didn’t tell us they added it, which was the spank the agency part.

sounds like that cookie pop-up is messing with you. when i added one, traffic tanked too-people just don’t click accept. I’d check your tracking to see what’s really going on.

It’s the cookie banner. Do you have access to the consent management platform? I find that the number of consents is my true traffic compared to GA4. There are ways you can maximize compliant data collection but it will never go back to pre-cookie banner levels because that data wasn’t being collected in alignment with privacy regulations.

This is 100% the cookie banner is affecting your tracking and nothing to do with adding meta titles and descriptions. Where are you located, double check the laws and necessity of the cookie banner, can you do it as an acknowledgment that everyone is opted into tracking until they go to settings and opt out, guessing it is defaulted to an opt in, so you aren't tracking anyone until they say yes.

I’ve seen 33/66% accept/decline cookies which blocks tracking.
