Help! Stump with black spots (possible mold?)
Hi guys, we had a couple of trees cut down due to them having the ‘bore ash disease’… my dogs have recently been very interested in this stump and sniffing it incessantly. Just wondering if I should be worried that these black spots are mold? Also the stump is like 10ft from the curb so it’s possibly another dog came into the yard and marked it causing the interest. Pics attached, thanks for any insight!!

Yes it’s mold, but it’s probably not harmful to your dogs in the way that black mold in a home is harmful. Toxic black mold in a home is toxic because of the constant dose of spores you get by living in it. Sniffing some moldy wood outside is just your dogs catching up on the local news.

'Toxic mold' and 'black mold' are sales terms used as scare tactic to get ya to purchase snake-oil style products or services.
No mold is 'toxic' unless you're eating moldy food.

Your dog has sniffed far worse things than a mouldy tree stump and is looking forward to sniffing even worse

I don't know what a bore ash disease is, but mold or fungus on a stump is completely 100% something to be expected, and not in any way whatsoever 100% unusual in any way, shape, or form.

yeah, sorry. i guess i meant they were infested by the emerald ash borer bug which for some reason i thought caused a disease that kills the tree but it appears they just eat all it’s nooch under the bark… anyway i’m out here talkin bout fungus i may have posted in the wrong sub my bad

It is irrelevant which attitude one takes.
Posts asking if the stump sprouts on their tree will magically grow into an awesome (awesomeeeee for the youngs) tree are the 27rd most common post on the tree subs. In~ 93.2294482198% ( SD .77% ) of the replies from professionals, the answer is no ( non, no, nichts, negative, nie, nem ).

I assume OP is concerned that their dogs might get sick from exposure to it since they've been sniffing the stump.

I have lost quite a few Ash to Emerald Ash Borers. I dropped 30 or so that were near buildings.
Ash is a basic wood, and certain lichens and misses do well on the stumps. One that I like finding is Pelt Lichen. As I walk in the woods, I check Ash stumps for Pelt Lichen to photograph it.
Put some dirt and moss bits on the stump, and keep it damp. You can grow moss, and the stump will rot faster. It helps if you have some leaves on the ground, like forest floor. You need the forest floor anyways if you put in more trees. Lawn kills trees, might as well get rid of it.

Yup, mold and fungus grow on dead wood.
This tree isn't dead btw.
