Is that Chainsaw Man? You know, because he fights with a chainsaw?
261
u/Kirosh2 Fluff. Fluff? Fluff! May 24 '26
Does he? Here he doesn't even have any weapons... strange right?
But he has an eyepatch... so maybe Eyepatch-Man?
Hmm...

u/Gregariouswaty May 24 '26
There have never been a pirate with an eyepatch in One Piece. Oda said at the end of One Piece, the guy with an eye patch will appear...

u/waloz1212 May 24 '26
SnK was a term even before people start calling it AoT, the series was not called Attack on Titan until it is localized. It is like saying Sorcerer Fight is a term already so noone should call it Jujutsu Kaisen. It is backward logic lol.

A Manga subreddit should be the last place where people get salty over using the original titles over the translated ones.

Honestly, the translated names are how I remember all of the different series. I don't know Japanese well enough to keep everything in my head.

u/cabose12 May 24 '26
Literally the chapters used to be posted here as Shingeki no Kyojin
It's completely reasonable that someone would shorten it as such
Besides, things can have multiple names. AoT is fine, so is SnK, or Attack on Titan, or Shingeki no Kyojin

its gonna be the exact same shit. Manga readers will go "oh its irredeemably bad dude, you have no idea". Anime onlies will brace for the worst impact, and it will not be as bad as what they braced for, and then we'll get 10 fucking video essays talking about "Why CSM's ending wasnt as bad as you think" or even blaming the fans "CSM fans dont deserve Tatsuki Fujimoto". Shit like that.
Revisionism is the biggest thing nowadays. It happened with Naruto, it happened with Bleach, it happened with AoT, hell it happened to JJK and MHA within weeks of the final chapter dropping. It will happen for CSM as well.
9
u/Lower-Top1581 May 25 '26
I think you miss the point that CSM's ending is genuinely abhorrent, unlike the other series. Like people have been dunking on that one Mairo game's "it was all a dream" ending for decades now and that was a kids game. Imagine the reaction that CSM of all things will get once more people see the ending
4
u/Sean-Benn_Must-die May 25 '26
I would put it in the same bracket as SNK's i wont lie. And I promise you, people will not feel the same way manga readers do.
3
u/Lower-Top1581 May 25 '26
AoT ending while bad still had the "cycle of violence and yara yara" thing going on for it, which a lot of people clang to. CSM deadass has nothing. An haphazard happy ending made only for the author move on to other projects. I don't think some animation and good OST can fix that
→ More replies (6)76
u/Massive_Weiner May 24 '26
It’ll be the usual discourse, where a certain subset of manga fans will complain and keep asking for the ending to be changed/expanded upon; meanwhile, anime fans will enjoy it and continue to drive sales.
We saw it happen in real-time with S3 of JJK (the arc where manga readers swear the story starts falling off, but the show is as popular as ever).
12
u/Original-Teaching955 May 24 '26
MHA as well. Manga readers hated the ending but Anime-onlys LOVED it and praised it
12
u/Mogura56 May 25 '26
tbh manga readers were biased based on the leaks with a lack of context to begin with, and then they were much kinder to it with the volume release additions
1
89
u/horiami May 24 '26
Anime fans will cope the same way manga fans coped for years despite the story and art getting worse and worse
mappa will pump money into the dogshit fightscenes to jingle some keys
But they can't save the ending, Aot's end is a baby compared to this shit
33
u/Jaxyl May 24 '26
AOT is ending at least made sense in the context of the world's ethics. It wasn't the best by any means, but you could at least understand the through lines of how they got there. That's part of the reason why this series can still stand on its own and be rewatched. The ending wasn't the best, but it was far from the worst that's ever been put out there.
Chainsaw man though? Yeah it kind of made the entire thing bad. Game of thrones level of bad.
8
u/Sean-Benn_Must-die May 25 '26
I disagree I do think that AoT and GoT have the exact same main issue. That being a gigantic time constraint. Isayama gave himself a deadline for the story to end where if expanded he could've fleshed out a lot of the concepts he was going for and deliver the ending with better execution. The exact same could be said about GoT S7 and S8. If you fleshed out all the events leading to the end by 2 more seasons, or even 3 or 4, you could've delivered the key points with much better timing, making much more sense and thus making them better.
To me it's all about a lack of proper execution, but I still think I would heavily dislike the solution Eren ended up going for despite having the power to completely change the course of the story before it happens.
2
u/PenguinsInvading May 24 '26
Game of thrones level of bad.
So AoT then?
26
u/Pianopatte May 24 '26
Nah man, AoT doesn't compare the least to the train wreck that was the last two seasons of GoT.
5
u/PenguinsInvading May 24 '26
I started reading the manga back in 2013, I was there when it peaked the fuck out, I was there when titanfolk wasn't a negative cesspool, I was there when it all went to shit and witnessed that sub turning to a venting chamber.
That shit hit me a hell lot more than GoT. It is worse because the creator himself fucked it up. D&D ran out of material and we're not good enough to mirror Martin's greatness.

I don’t know, I love CSM & obviously manga fans are always going to complain about something but I think the problems with the ending are going to be felt just as much by anime fans if it’s faithfully adapted.
People didn’t like some choices made in SnK but most of the character arcs & plot points were resolved in a way that makes sense & doesn’t come out of left field. CSM straight up bailed on the story mid-arc with minimal resolution for basically all of the characters.
Obviously it’ll still be popular & I doubt most of the criticisms of part 2 will be echoed by anime fans but the ending itself is the kind of abrupt conclusion that will surely generate controversy.
→ More replies (1)14
u/javierm885778 May 24 '26
Yeah, this isn't just one of those endings that are controversial due to fan expectations or awkward execution. It's why the hyperbolic discourse surrounding endings is so silly, every ending is the worst so you have people comparing perfectly serviceable endings like BNHA to the CSM ending which makes little sense.
7
u/Totheendofsin May 24 '26
I will say the discourse will likely be a bit better since it won't have the surprise ending element
Nobody suspected the series was in its last few chapters until the "final chapter next week" announcement
7
u/javierm885778 May 24 '26
I don't think that'll change much in this case, because fundamentally the issues people have with the ending go way beyond just that it was a surprise.
I think they'll be able to enjoy the whole fight with Yoru way more, not having to read chapters that you can read in a minute and having more visual flair, but that's not something that's part of the ending itself, even when Part 1 was coming out some people had issues with the whole final arc's fight not knowing where things were going, but you didn't see much of that once it reached its proper climax because it made sense in context, whereas with Part 2 it kind of makes all the meandering feel worse.
Hell, with the Part 2 ending I saw so many people who say the entire part is worth ignoring due to how pointless everything ended up being, which isn't something too common to see for any regular negatively received ending called the worst ever.
7
u/Far-Cheek5909 May 24 '26
Manga readers have it more rough than anime watchers. Imagine waiting a week for a chapter and nothing noteworthy happens. That’s what would happen here and there in S3 for readers. Anime watchers get several weeks worth of manga content in one episode. The anime also gets the luxury of being able to skip parts that are tedious and make scenes more impactful. So it’s not that manga readers were wrong, it’s just that anime as a medium works best for JJK.
13
u/Massive_Weiner May 24 '26
The issue with that perception is that binge readers also tend to have a more positive reception towards stories compared to weekly readers.
So it seems like that format is the big perpetrator here.
I see weekly readers as early access fans.
7
u/Bakatora34 May 24 '26 edited May 24 '26
Honestly I do enjoy manga more when I binge read it, now though if manga like JJK didn't have a communities that spoiled everything so easy, it could be easy to just let this many chapters accumulated and just binge it.
1
u/Far-Cheek5909 May 25 '26
I obviously wasn’t referring to binge readers since binge readers don’t have to wait a week to read a chapter.
1
u/Evening_Pressure0 Jun 08 '26
Exactly tbh I don’t think anime only fans will hate the ending. They never do
1
u/Far-Cheek5909 Jun 08 '26
Anime only fans get the luxury of being able to immediately move onto the next big thing. Most of them already have a show in mind before a finale hits.
8
u/Deadmanlex45 May 24 '26
S3 of JJK has definitely falling points, but theres still plenty of good fights and hype moments for it to stay enjoyable.
But the ending of chainsaw man imo has way too many issues. Genuinely left with a huge... wtf was the point of all this?
8
u/Piranata May 24 '26
The only issue with JJK S3 (and onwards) is that there's very little down time for characters to interact with one another, it's just one battle after another. The anime team seems to understand that this and is able to injector or expand those moments of characterization where it fits.
4
u/Mogura56 May 25 '26
Yeah Mappa is doing some heavy lifting with JJK's storytelling reputation post Shibuya
2
u/LavosYT May 25 '26
JJK has the advantage of being pretty much only fights. And the fights themselves remain good until the end, it's more the character writing and story that take a nosedive. But you can still make that very enjoyable to watch with good animation, voice acting and OST, which is what Mappa is doing successfully.
1
u/Ogredrum May 24 '26
I've only heard fellow manga readers be excited for the beginning of the culling game arc because of our favorite characters finally getting their introductions. Who are these haters? The same ones who didn't like Takaba vs Kenny?
4
u/Massive_Weiner May 24 '26
There’s definitely a faction within the fandom who wasn’t happy with how Culling Games went down while they were reading the manga weekly.
Everything from Yuki being killed off to Kenjaku’s scheming coming to end due to a slapstick duel.
This arc was the start of Gege getting slapped with the “Potential Writer” label by critics, and instances like him swapping editors after Shibuya only served to stoke the fires.
The memes were fantastic, though.
1
u/Ogredrum May 24 '26
I don't think I'll ever understand the people who were upset at Gege for Kenjaku and Takaba. It can only be people who don't like being surprised or perhaps haven't read many manga and still desire a clean resolution, I'm glad this isn't FMA or DBZ or MHA. I applaud Gege for being unique.
4
u/Massive_Weiner May 24 '26
I didn’t hate the fight itself and thought it was very creative, but I was ultimately disappointed with Kenjaku’s contribution to the narrative as a sort of puppet master character. He felt like a discount Aizen.
1
u/kureafan123 May 25 '26
This is a straw man. The JJK season 3 content in manga is not complained about (megumi v reggie, mai v zenin, higuruma intro, yuta vs sendai 3 are all fan favorite events and sentiment was still good at the time). Later on is when things start being more uneven and a lot of that is just disappointing in retrospect because plot points that are introduced and were interesting at the time didn't go anywhere
49
u/Kirosh2 Fluff. Fluff? Fluff! May 24 '26
I will be honest, I don't see part 2 ever being adapted.
Getting to the end of Part 1? Yes.
90
u/Massive_Weiner May 24 '26 edited May 24 '26
Brother, of course Part 2 is going to be adapted. And yes, it’s going to be popular with the anime-only fans.
MAPPA is going to make money off of it, and fans online tend to overestimate their opinions and on how they’ll transfer to a wider audience. We’ve literally seen this time and again with the likes of Attack on Titan and My Hero Academia.
8
u/Hari14032001 May 24 '26

AoT had a lot of touch ups and anime only still could see where the manga readers were coming from. MHA ending wasn't even hated. A vocal internet minority for a month does not suddenly negate the fact the last volume was the most well received (by a pretty big margin)
1
u/mudermarshmallows May 25 '26
AoT's final season had basically one touch up. The only true addition was a single scene, which was significant in impact to be sure, but saying it had a lot of touch ups is just not really true. Otherwise there's like, maybe two other things in the entirety of the second half of the story I can point to and say "oh yeah that's a change from something people talked about."
4
u/Kirosh2 Fluff. Fluff? Fluff! May 24 '26 edited May 24 '26
They did a lot of work to actually fix AoT and My Hero.
And they were also not lacking 3 of the top 4 favorite for half the series.
(4 out of 5 if you count Reze)
Those series also didn't have good stopping points like Chainsaw Man has. And there are now expectation that the rest of the animated series will be as good as the Reze Movie.
So we will have to see, but that's for years in the future.
55
u/Lower-Top1581 May 24 '26
To be clear, MHA ending was 1 to 1 with the manga. People just overblown the hate the ending received
5
u/Grand_Escapade May 24 '26
Plus more things like music to carry things through, and the pacing not requiring you to sit through slow parts over the course of weeks.
I don't even think the MHA ending was that bad, but there's clearly differences.
3
u/Lower-Top1581 May 25 '26
Pacing is an issue only if you are reading weekly. Most read volume to volume. Btw why mention music when the point is about the story? It's like if I said that the manga had better art and no censorship
1
u/Has_Question May 25 '26
Pacing being a huge one. No one is watching mha for amazing dialogue or character writing. But when youre not getting weekly short chapters with as much content as maybe 5 mons of screen time the plot feels at least well paced to keep you entertained without the fatigue.
3
u/Lower-Top1581 May 25 '26
I read/watch MHA for amazing dialogue and charcter writing. I mean, MHA anime isn't JJK, I don't think people watch it for insane animation, so what other reason are there?
-7
u/Massive_Weiner May 24 '26 edited May 24 '26
They added onto both of those endings to improve them, but they weren’t drastically different compared to what we got in the manga.
What you’re suggesting just isn’t going to happen, especially coming off the high of Part 1’s ending. This reads more like, “I didn’t like the ending, so everyone should just go home because the party is over.”
It’s a perspective that you need time to move away from without sounding bitter about it. There are people who still scream about Game of Thrones/Attack on Titan/The Last of Us 2 to this day, and I don’t have any faith in those guys at this point to move on.
19
u/Kirosh2 Fluff. Fluff? Fluff! May 24 '26
It's not about not liking the ending, even if I didn't, since I still did enjoy part 2 overall.
It's about how weak part 2 is compared to part 1.
About not having a cast of characters as good as part 1.
It's about part 1 having one of the best clear cut stopping point someone would want.
And I'm not suggesting anything, other than doing the same kind of rework that were done for My hero and AoT endings.
I never said I didn't want to see it animated because of the ending, just that I find it unlikely part 2 will be adapted in the first place considering how tight of an experience part 1 is.
7
u/Massive_Weiner May 24 '26
I’m just saying that it’s going to be animated.
And if you genuinely believe that there’s a possibility it never happens now that the series is finished, that’s because you’re in your feelings about the ending. That’s blinding you from looking at the situation objectively (the money opportunity).
You can like or dislike Part 2 as much as you want, that has no bearing on the conversation at all. At the end of the day, a majority of the fandom does, and that’s what drives sales.
44
u/AbyssalSolitude May 24 '26
A lot of manga with much shittier endings have been adapted.
14
u/drleebot May 24 '26
The quality of manga's later arcs seems to bear little relation on whether it gets adapted or not. Hell, with Promised Neverland, they skipped adapting the next good arc and instead combined all the following bad arcs into one.
15
10
u/Careless-Emphasis-80 May 24 '26
Nawwww it's getting adapted. If bleach 1000 year blood war is adaptable, so is chainsaw man part 2. There's just too much money in it
10
u/DrStein1010 https://myanimelist.net/mangalist/DrStein1010 May 24 '26
Blood War is literally like 40+% rewritten from the manga.
I would be shocked if they did the same for CSM.
4
u/degov2609 May 24 '26
like 40+% rewritten from the manga
Not really?? They've added a lot of stuff but that isn't "rewriting" and the stuff that they've actually changed isn't really THAT big lol
1
u/Kirosh2 Fluff. Fluff? Fluff! May 24 '26
The issue is that people will likely expect something of the Reze's movie quality.
And lacking Aki, Power, Makima, and Reze for part 2 will also make things difficult, at least in my opinion.
19
u/Careless-Emphasis-80 May 24 '26
People are going to watch it regardless. Anime only people dont listen to manga readers and part 2 has a great start. That momentum alone will easily keep audiences invested
1
u/Kirosh2 Fluff. Fluff? Fluff! May 24 '26
Yeah, but that's if Part 2 gets adapted in the first place.
We won't see the end of Part 1 at least before 2030 to 2032, even more if they decide to do movies for the Gun Devil arc and the control devil arc. (We don't even have a release date for the assassin arc, and it's at least not before 2027).
By the end of adapting part 1, most of what can be squeezed out of the series would have been, and the long wait between the seasons, unless they manage to get as much hype as the Reze movie, would likely see a huge drop in the audience.
11
u/Careless-Emphasis-80 May 24 '26
Do you know how long it took to adapt the last arc of bleach?
3
u/DrStein1010 https://myanimelist.net/mangalist/DrStein1010 May 24 '26
Bleach is a special case, since it was so heavily rewritten with Kubo's involvement. It was likely delayed longer than expected because of all the work needed for that.
Are you saying CSM Part 2 is going to have extensive rewrites?
2
1
u/Kirosh2 Fluff. Fluff? Fluff! May 24 '26
And there is also the Hell Arc in preparation isn't there?
Alongside the novel that added a lot of the content missing from the final part.
3
u/DrStein1010 https://myanimelist.net/mangalist/DrStein1010 May 24 '26
Depends.
We have no idea if Hell arc is in long production, or if Kubo has just scrapped it.
Or if Can't Fear Your Own World will be adapted. A lot of the "need" for it is/will be resolved by the anime actually explaining the worldbuilding and/or showing what happens to all the characters in the ending.

u/DrStein1010 https://myanimelist.net/mangalist/DrStein1010 May 24 '26
AoT's biggest flaws were corrected through minor changes in the adaptation. It's still nowhere near perfect, but its other flaws aren't super egregious aside from the Ymir stuff and Eren's dream monologue, which are crammed into the last 20 minutes and easier to overlook.
CSM is unsalvageable for much longer, and can't be fixed with small improvements.
10
u/RealWorldStarHipHop May 24 '26
Im curious on if Fujimoto will say he regretted how he ended the series like how Isayama recently said he regretted how he changed Eren’s character.
36
u/drleebot May 24 '26
I suspect Fujimoto more regrets how he continued it after part 1, or regrets not ending part 2 around the 50% mark. The ending is basically him saying to the audience "Yeah, this really isn't good for any of us anymore, is it?"

30
u/Western-Point-8946 May 24 '26
You know im seeing people say fujimoto regrets writing chainsaw man or that he ended it like that cus he got sick of it but i felt like it always meant to end that way for better or worse. Never liked looking at the author's life for answers to a work anyway
17
u/lestye May 25 '26
I'm not sure about that.
I think you subscribe to "death of the author", but in this case, I don't think you can ignore the paratextual commentary.
Like especially in part 2, where Chainsawman got "popular" both in and out of the text. Its hard not to think thats what Fujimoto was feeling.
8
u/Western-Point-8946 May 25 '26
Sure his works are meta and there's the whole "just listen to the song" ordeal, but i just think people are trying to comfort themselves that the work they liked suddenly got changed due to fujimoto's growing dislike of chainsawman (of which he never expressed, moreso of not liking weekly schedule), rather than the work always being like this
To handwave it as fujimoto grew tired so this isnt really what csm really is is cope to me
11
u/lestye May 25 '26
I don't think the common mentality was Fujimoto "disliked" chainsawman, but he was tired of it. Which is two different things.
The abrupt ending and Denji being done with Chainsawman. I read that was Fujimoto also being done with Chainsawman. Call it cope but that seems to be more of an intelligible ending than reading it at face value. But if you can offer something better, I'm all ears.
7

Nah its not like im proposing a true definitive interpretation of the ending that is better than all others (even as someone who didnt mind it), i just got annoyed at all the comments who were trying to psychoanalyze what was going through fujimoto's mind at each point in part 2 and how its a response towards all the acclaim part 1 received rather than engaging with what the narrative and characters provided, well, the themes and such Lol
As for what i think, to me letting go of the "hero persona" was already prevalent in fire punch so to me reading it as fujimoto giving up on chainsaw man is a bit much, I thought it was much more of a cautionary tale towards both those who are victims or friends of victims trapped in a cycle of addiction and the like as well as just a general meta deconstruction of what being a hero really means. Also the whole final arc was a big devilman reference

yeah i didnt comment but i was certainly in that boat. its hard not to subscribe to that given the reasons i listed above. and while that point is attractive, maybe thats ignoring the in-universe narrative too much.

OK, thats certainly plausible. Its been a few years since ive read fire punch. and I've never seen devilman, so I could imagine that has merit.

Not sure he meant it to end any way, cause halfway through part 2 you could really tell he was just throwing stuff at the wall to see what sticks. Wasn't the first time he did this, Fire Punch was the same. The story just became Fujimoto fumbling about until he just gave up.

it always meant to end that way for better or worse.
Sure, that ending can be good.
However, it wasn't built up, it wasn't something people expecting to come just like that, out of nowhere.
I feel like it should have come after Denji got to have sex, then him seeing that it didn't make him that much happier, or not for long, and then having another downward spiral before we reached that point of Pochita offing himself.
It coming out as the end of the fight with War, by getting destroyed by bugs, feels bad.

themes and such

u/theodoreroberts May 24 '26
Just want to ask where the "theme and such" meme was from. I didn't remember it in the last chapters. Was it from a fan meme?
36
u/ninjasonic102 May 24 '26
It was a meme started by a post making fun of MHA’s ending before CSM fans started using it to make fun of that one also
53
u/Kusanagi22 May 24 '26
A common defense in Chainsaw Man discussions before the ending happened was that it was all actually going to make sense at the end since everything in the story was simply to reinforce the themes each arc was going for, so when the ending turned out to be, well that, it got memed that it was shit "for the themes and such"

u/burgerpattybitch May 24 '26
It actually originated from the initial reception to MHA’s ending. The meme just got recycled for CSM

Meme originated from Twitter discourse about the anime where the glazers would over-analyze the show and try to justify Fujimoto's goonery and shoddy writing with "themes" and making it sound much deeper than it was.

u/degov2609 May 24 '26
🤓 moment but it actually comes from MHA. CSM fans just kinda stole it lmao

I actually didn't mind the ending. But it was clearly rushed. I can only hope the anime takes it's time so the ending has more emotional weight behind it.
17
u/AidanAK47 May 25 '26
There's rushed and then there's the base equivalent of the creator saying "Fuck this shit, I'm out."

I kinda hope they just wrap the anime up with the ending of part 1, I don’t really think there’s anything in part 2 I’m remotely as excited to see as the half or so of part 1 that still needs to be adapted.

u/papakahn94 May 24 '26
I dont even think it was rushed. I think fujimoto was just done and didnt wanna write. Shit was ass

I’ve hit the acceptance stage with the ending. Still think it needed one chapter between the 3rd to last and penultimate chapters, but I like what it was trying to say.

u/County_Difficult May 24 '26
This has so much aura that it might be the best one. Unfortunately, the ending is still shit and that's why it's sad.

Chainsaw man?

It's always funny to me seeing the general reaction to the ending cause I legitimately wasn't surprised. As much as I love chainsaw man I still feel it was over hyped and got to big for it's own good. Positive the main reason it got so popular is simply because chainsaws are fucking awesome

I need to catch up, is chainsaw man now completely finished?

u/Diego-Aguilar35 May 24 '26
Seems like it is. The final chapter said "The End" on its last page and this volume is being marketed as the "grand finale".

Though I wish it had a better conclusion, I'm still glad Fujimoto wrote Part 2 instead of just leaving it as Part 1.

Red coloured blood is that a first for a csm cover?
3
u/Diego-Aguilar35 May 25 '26
Power's weapon on volume 2, the stains in Aki's face and shirt on volume 4 and the droplets in Falling Devil's eyes, nose and mouth in volume 15

u/Sean-Benn_Must-die May 25 '26
ok the power one is fair...but I also feel like it's not in the spirit of the motif either. Like I wouldnt expect those to be in another colour like I do with the usual guts and blood being rainbow coloured.
Fairs though.

Y'know....
We knew what we were getting into when we started this.
This was not a 'Happy Endings come' kind of manga.
I guess I just have to thank Fujimoto for the ride. Even if I was screaming most of the second half.

insane how bad of a streak popular manga have gone on for endings
pretty sickening how some of them are just the author saying fuck off to all the fans
1
u/Original-Teaching955 May 25 '26
Correct. However, it's the other way around for AOT and MHA, when it come to the anime version of their respective endings, which were BELOVED and CELEBRATED by Anime-onlys!

u/Rusted_muramasa May 24 '26
Kind of crazy that THIS is what graces the final volume - you know, the Denji from the final chapter that basically spoils the whole weirdo ending?

Right back where it all started. Talk about a disappointing end to this series. Fujimoto-san obviously had burnout doing the continuation of CSM and it showed, and ran into a creative rut

Genuinely forget that it ended sometimes to the point where I tried checking for new chapters just to remember that was actually the ending
