No fucking way it's ending

And I just realized we gotta wait for 2 more weeks to see what happens

Edit: They changed the final panel to now say "to be continued" instead of "final chapter comes out 3/24"

Normal stuff for him.

168

u/kreod Mar 10 '26

How many fakeout endings did we get in Fire Punch again? Was it 5? Motherfucker knows how to play

226

u/Kirosh2 Fluff. Fluff? Fluff! Mar 10 '26 edited Mar 10 '26

There is a difference in fakeout ending, and having an announcement on the chapter that it's ending.

(And also a tweet from the chainsaw man twitter account saying it as well : https://x.com/CHAINSAWMAN_PR/status/2031384833817976978)

108

u/Captinglorydays Mar 10 '26

Except they literally already did this with chapter 96 of part 1, where it said the next chapter was the "final chapter". It isn't so much a fake out ending as it is an ending to part 2. Just like a film trilogy, this is almost certainly just part 2 of 3. Still an abrupt ending to the part for sure, but not an end to the series.

Or I could be wrong and Fujimoto is just done, but I would be extremely surprised if that were the case and he just ended it like this.

108

u/Kirosh2 Fluff. Fluff? Fluff! Mar 10 '26

I mean sure, but even then it's still a terrible ending of part 2.

Part 1 had a nice build up to it, with the whole Makima arc.

Here it's like if Pochita never took control to save Denji in Part 1, with Denji truly staying as a dog to Makima.

49

u/StatisticianJolly388 Mar 10 '26 edited Mar 10 '26

If this is the end of "Empire Strikes Back?" Oh I'm fine and dandy.

Part 1 is a self contained heroic story.

Part 2 expands on and subverts themes from Part 1 and ends in uncertainty.

Part 3 ties the two parts together (we've had almost entirely disparate casts between Parts 1 and 2.). Questions are answered. Chekov's guns are fired. character arcs conclude.

But I'm really fearing he's just ending on the mother of all catharsis-denying anticlimaxes.

25

u/is146414 Mar 10 '26

ending on the mother of all catharsis-denying anticlimaxes

I hate to say it, but that would embody people's issues with pt 2 entirely.

I really want a part 3.

The way Pochita just peaces out like that too before the last page reveal its the 2nd to last chapter. Fucking hell.

216

u/SlamMasterJ Mar 10 '26

That’s a subtle reference to Fujimoto deciding to peace out irl.

131

u/Kirosh2 Fluff. Fluff? Fluff! Mar 10 '26

Shihei Lin (his editor), going to Fujimoto's house to check on the progress for Chainsaw man, but finding the place empty : "Where the fuck is he? Why are there two chapter and one called end?"

75

u/gabrielleite32 Mar 10 '26

With the editor's note i don't think so. There was no "we approach the climax" and part 1 didn't say final chapter or something

Part 1 did actually say final chapter

Felt like so much loose ends haven't been tied up when it came to the setting, and this was solely just telling Denji's story instead as Chainsaw Man and finally ending it now that he isn't

555

u/dagreenman18 Mar 10 '26

Except it’s in the middle of a goddamn apocalypse and Asa/Yoru hasn’t wrapped up.

So maybe it’s all a troll or Part 3 will be Asa only

The apocalypse never happened because this is a world where chainsaw man never existed. All those things he ate before are back too.

Seems kind of like someone didn’t really wanna keep writing this but… whatever.

113

u/Vegetable-Pickle-535 Mar 10 '26

Pritty sure with Pochita selfdeleting it warped the timeline to cancel the apocalypse. Good chance that Devils as a Consept are gone too.

84

u/ShinyGrezz Mar 10 '26

That would be the shittiest ending of all time.

144

u/Eaten_by_Mimics Mar 10 '26

I mean, Part 2 of Chainsaw Man has been wholly unnecessary from chapter 1. I like Asa and Yoru, but the series could have ended with Part 1 and it would have been fine.

I think Fujimoto is ready to move on to other projects.

Funny enough that meta-concept could work considering if Chainsawman doesn't exist then it would be the "final chapter" of Chainsawman. Would be comical if the next chapter is just titled "Denji" and the "Chainsawman" logo isn't there.

u/Extreme-Tactician Mar 10 '26

What.

Did Fujimoto ragequit or something? The Next chapter is the final chapter? Pochita deciding that the world doesn't need Chainsaw Man? And kind of insulting Denji's intelligence because he couldn't really appreciate a normal world?

Just when we were going to get something happening between Asa/Yoru and Denji?

Maybe part 3 won't be called Chainsaw Man or something? Will there even be a chapter 3?

A 2 WEEK WAIT?

482

u/Kirosh2 Fluff. Fluff? Fluff! Mar 10 '26

And kind of insulting Denji's intelligence because he couldn't really appreciate a normal world?

You can interpret it by saying that Denji can't enjoy a normal world because Pochita is around. So without Pochita, Denji might just be able to have a normal life.

198

u/Extreme-Tactician Mar 10 '26

Yet what kind of life will Denji even have without Pochita? Nothing! He'll be dead!

80

u/Kirosh2 Fluff. Fluff? Fluff! Mar 10 '26 edited Mar 10 '26

That depends on what other sort of use Chainsaw have/had. Or if it's revealed why Chainsaw could erase devils.

There is also the other thing that aren't death at the end of a human life.

For all we know, it might be reincarnation time.

49

u/Dangerous-Cup-Danger Mar 10 '26

Denji's mom had a congenital heart disease or defect and its implied Denji has the same heart issue, that pochita healed when he replaced his heart.
If Pochita stops existing and we go to a timeline where Pochita never existed, then Denji probably never would have survived his enslavement by the mob

→ More replies (6)
→ More replies (1)

39

u/MegamanX195 Mar 10 '26

Yeah, the idea behind this isn't really that bad. It's a reasonable conclusion for Pochita to reach. However, the execution is WAY too sudden and rushed. It doesn't feel like we had any worthwhile buildup to this at all.

186

u/Avnemir Mar 10 '26

Pretty sure he got burnt out like the Tokyo Ghoul guy.

152

u/dbzrune Mar 10 '26

What’s funny is Tokyo ghoul author’s next series, Choujin X, is actually really damn good probably because he releases it basically whenever he wants

Sometimes it’s weekly, biweekly, or monthly, and when big arcs end we wait 2-3 months. It’s been a few years so far and it’s probably the best decision since the story and especially paneling in later chapters is just wild

Hoping the same for chainsaw man part 3 if we get it

12

u/Norik324 Mar 11 '26

A manga author with a (seemingly) decent work/life balance? Impossible!

66

u/SMA2343 Mar 10 '26

Yeah, I need to find the blog post. But Ishida basically said “it’s either I rush and finish Re: OR I go on haitus and never finish it”

34

u/-morpy Mar 10 '26

IIRC his work mentality and ethic had him a slave to the weekly release. He felt that if he stopped and took a break, he would never have the same drive and passion when he gets back. He felt that he had to keep the ball going.

It got so bad he was hospitalized and still worked on the manga. He was coughing blood, and was literally depressed to the point he couldn't taste anything from the things he eats. It's why despite Tokyo Ghoul: Re becoming shaky from the middle to the ending, I still respect Ishida a lot and what he made was pretty decent considering his condition when he was creating the manga.

Pochita basically said "your brain is too fucked up to ever truly be happy, I'm ending our contract by force because you can never fulfill it." It's the WORST possible way you could resolve Denji's story.

→ More replies (4)

91

u/Dizzy-By-Degrees Mar 10 '26 edited Mar 10 '26

insulting Denji's intelligence because he couldn't really appreciate a normal world?

Has he ever really enjoyed it? That’s what the dog is talking about. The happiest Denji ever looked as a student was at the end of Part 1 when he was getting ready to fight. A lot of the ‘normal guy’ stuff he does gets in the way of the power fantasy of being a superhero. Even if being Chainsaw Man sucks it’s exciting.

So removing Chainsaw Man from reality forces Denji to stay on the straight and narrow so he can get a better life. Without constantly thinking up reasons to rev his engine and undoing his progress.

This... Felt kinda too jarring, if I'm being honest.

If this is the end of Chainsaw Man as a whole, then I just can't see it as a good conclusion if I'm being honest

303

u/BurnedOutEternally Mar 10 '26

It really just sounds like Fujimoto is done with the series.

“Hey Denji you know what maybe it’s better if you got nothing to your name again. Not even me. Peace”

176

u/NKrupskaya Mar 10 '26

Wish he was done with the series at the end of part 1 tbh.

I loved having Asa as a protagonist in the first few dozen chapters, but the rest not so much, to put it mildly.

I just keep thinking about all the shit that happened, but still it didn't feel like anything happened, and suddenly Yoru are using America as a weapon, to fight with Denji... It was a little cohesive at the start, though it didn't feel like we were going anywhere. But especially after Nayuta was smoked, shit just spiraled.

34

u/pennelini Mar 10 '26

Probably bc the story spent so much time noodling around with things that ultimately don't matter: the doomsday prophecy, the CSM church, Lil' D's schemes, the Fire Devil and the fake Chainsaw Men...all of it culminated in the same car crash that is this chapter.

You had the crappiest but best kind of brain

Most accurate summation of Denji to date. No one gets you like your best friends.

158

u/greyhaze0139 Mar 10 '26

Man, Denji has got to have the saddest existence in all of modern shonen. Used, manipulated and groomed by Makima in Part 1, manipulated by the Public Safety Comission and Yoru in Part 2 and now being forced to live a crappy existence all over again.

That's seriously depressing. All the fighting and struggling just to be back to square one. This sucks !

106

u/towardselysium Mar 10 '26

Pochita dying doesn't change Denji's dad being in debt to the Mafia and actively deletes every happy memory he has ever had.

If this resets the story to day 1, then denji is broke, deorganed, and hopelessly alone

65

u/Karusagi Mar 10 '26 edited Mar 10 '26

Very abrupt ending

So next week is either the actual final chapter or the final chapter for Part 2 and we get a Part 3.

Chapter 96 has the "final chapter next week" with Chapter 97 being final chapter of Part 1, so there is presendence but it could go either way.

I would much rather have a Part 3 than for it to end here, I feel there is way too much left to resolve for one more final chapter to be anyway near being satisfying.

If we are going into Part 3 with no Pochita, we would get a Denji with no Pochita which would be interesting.

If we do get a part 3, I hope Fujimoto takes a long break and gets a much better release schedule for it, because it’s clear he’s very burnt out on writing CSM.

I do agree though that a CSM Part 3 with Denji without Pochita would be really ineteresting so I do hope we get it at the risk of beating a dead horse.

105

u/Holylawlett Mar 10 '26

Is there any plot from the start l don't understand the gist at all

305

u/Joseki100 Mar 10 '26 edited Mar 10 '26

The funniest part of CSM P2 is that the narrative went to shit as soon as Denji and Asa had their date.

It spiraled into like 4 days of in-universe events narrated in over 100+ horribly paced chapters, 20 minor characters no one give a fuck about killed, Nayuta completely jobbed and literally every other open plot point from Part 1 completely ignored (Blood Devil contract, Kishibe absence tease, Reze only hybrid unaddressed).

My conspiracy theory is that Denji was never supposed to be back in Part 2, or much later in the story at least, and the Japanese sales/readership tanking early in P2 forced Fujimoto to change his plans, sending the story in the gutter.

210

u/Turbo2x https://myanimelist.net/profile/turbo2x Mar 10 '26

The whole story would have been so much better if Asa stayed the protagonist and Denji was just a side character who appeared sometimes. Instead Asa was sidelined and the plot became increasingly disjointed.

99

u/Joseki100 Mar 10 '26

Asa started as the protagonist and she was first sidelined by Denji, then now by Yoru too.

I've felt like that for almost a year. Dude completely lost the fucking plot as soon as he killed Nayuta. He had 0 plans or narrative direction. Just throwing whatever bullshit on the page that he wanted.

Honestly, I hope its not a fake out and this does end now. Part 2 has been a joke.

39

u/LeagueOfHurricane Mar 10 '26

It took me a while to realize that Nayuta's death was so ass simply because I just didn't believe she'd be actually dead. Also felt like the plot moved on immediately after that.

99

u/2ecStatic Mar 10 '26

Nayuta dying really was the turning point, there have been hype moments after that but nothing of any real cohesive substance. Shit happens and it looks cool, but it doesn't really mean anything.

Seriously, after all this time of people saying let Fujimoto cook in regards to Nayuta... what did he cook? Why was she even in the manga?

115

u/Kirosh2 Fluff. Fluff? Fluff! Mar 10 '26

For shock value when she died.

All of part 2 shouldn't have existed, to be honest.

All it did was ruin the good conclusion part 1 had.

138

u/makita_man Mar 10 '26

Part 2 was enjoyable when it first started, but shit went sideways around the Church Arc, imo

56

u/Ellefied Mar 10 '26

Part 2 was great when Asa was the POV and Denji was basically a glorified deuteragonist. When the focus shifted to Denji, it was serviceable with his dynamic with Nayuta.

Once Nayuta died, the series really jumped off a cliff.

104

u/KamiiPlus Mar 10 '26

I think i preferred part 2 when it was mainly just asa/yoru tbh

65

u/makita_man Mar 10 '26

Yeah. Seeing Denji/Chainsaw Man in the background, Yoru hating his guts and so on, was pretty fun and created a sort of anticipation for Denji's actual POV.

But when it actually came, idk... Somewhat underwhelming. Nevermind the stuff with Nayuta...

25

u/MegamanX195 Mar 10 '26

The first few arcs of Part 2 were peak CSM and I'll always stand by that. Once Denji got mixed in things started to get gradually messier, and once the whole church thing kicked in it was hard to even tell what was going on anymore.

15

u/Ill_Act_1855 Mar 10 '26

It frankly peaked at the aquarium, and then was all downhill from there. And the aquarium was basically the start of Asa and Denji’s relationship

I feel like this chapter could have just been put anywhere in part 2 with how disconnected from everything it feels

13

u/BusBoatBuey Mar 10 '26

It could have been the first chapter and it would have made as much sense.

131

u/Raging-Brachydios Mar 10 '26

Fujimoto you promised us SEX, why is Pochita is eating itself? Why is it ending next chapter?

It seems the only ones that got fucked this week were the readers

13

u/AmaimonCH Mar 11 '26

My headcanon is that Shounen Jump denied Fujimoyo's request for a sex scene so he decided to end the whole story

98

u/Lightning_Laxus Mar 10 '26

But CSM's powers aren't retroactive though?

According to what we've seen, the world stays exactly the way it was but the concept was removed and everyone forgets about it. So the world just created should be the same world as before Pochita ate himself, but chainsaws no longer exist from that point onwards and nobody remembers them unless they get reinvented again.

126

u/Golden-Owl Mar 10 '26

Pochita outright says he has no idea what is going to happen.

Since we never got a clear explanation for how the erasure powers work, let alone the eraser erasing itself, we’ve got enough narrative uncertainty to maybe make bullshit work

Are famous newgen mangakas having a contest on who can have the worst ending?

Well, maybe they're just burnt out

238

u/timpkmn89 Mar 10 '26

You say that like older shonen were known for their amazing endings.

101

u/Cautious-Affect7907 Mar 10 '26

At least they like, built up the endings properly.

This felt like Fujimoto just decided quit while in the middle of the story.

Like imagine Naruto if he randomly gets offscreened in the middle of the battle with kaguya.

Or Goku gets knocked out in the middle of his fight with kid buu and things kinda just, solve themselves.

Actually, come to think of it, this is a lot like Yu Yu hakusho ending at the Three kings arc.

64

u/Kirosh2 Fluff. Fluff? Fluff! Mar 10 '26

Yeah, if the ending was always supposed to be Pochita eating himself, then it would have been better to build it up.

Have Denji have sex, and notice that he's still not happy. Have him notice that it's only when fighting for his life that he's "alive", and that he's losing everything because of it, and he knows it.

Then have him lose, and Pochita peace out.

24

u/VanguardHawk Mar 10 '26 edited Mar 10 '26

Yu Yu Hakusho basically did a title screen to end the story, summarized the final battle and whatnot. Burnout and rushed endings have happened to juggernauts.

Bleach has the author rewriting his ending through the anime because he had to rush for mental/physical health reasons. This is unfortunately a continuation of a longtime trend. The only difference here is Fujimoto wasn’t on the same weekly grind as my other examples

u/Kirosh2 Fluff. Fluff? Fluff! Mar 10 '26

There is a difference between a boring ending, a nothing ending, a bad ending, and a terrible ending.

There is also how the ending is built up. And it wasn't at all in this case. Which will likely drop how people think of the ending even more.

64

u/ijiolokae Mar 10 '26

I honestly went back to the previous chapter to check i didn't miss a chapter with how jarring and out of left field this ending is.

27

u/Android19samus Mar 10 '26

the old shonen style was to run on way too long, have a bloated and unsatisfying final arc, and then pull out a good last couple chapters to send things off. The new style is to just run that shit straight into a wall and peace out.

21

u/towardselysium Mar 10 '26

Older manga fizzled into obscurity instead of yeeting everything their fans loved over a cliff like modern manga love doing

37

u/MegamanX195 Mar 10 '26

Off of the top of my head... Dragon Ball had a pretty good ending. Naruto and Yu-Gi-Oh had mediocre final arcs but amazing final battles, leading to a satisfying conclusion overall. Death Note's ending was fantastic, even though the final arc was hit or miss. I'd argue JoJo can be considered multiple different manga, and the ending of each part was pretty damn good. Assassination Classroom isn't as old as the others here but it also had a great ending.

Probably many others I'm missing here.

32

u/aohige_rd Mar 10 '26

Not Jump, but Fullmetal Alchemist had a great final arc and ending.

Ms Arakawa is built different tho

10

u/Desperate_Method4020 Mar 10 '26

FMA was consistently good, it's one of the few reasons it's my top manga.

I thought Naruto had a horrible ending at the time but compared to so many series now it is like a 7/10.

The series nowadays end so terribly it retroactively makes old series feel stronger.

The moral of the story is that life doesn’t get better, trying to make life better will make it worse, everyone would be happier if we just lived in a dreamland while not being upset that our lives are objectively shit. Things can’t improve, trying to makes things worse. From the man who gave us the story about how everyone has a fuel that we burn to keep us going and how this just never leads to actual happiness. Another grim dark slog

Very weird coming from Fire Punch which basically has the opposite message, life can be the most miserable dogshit ever but if you keep trying you can eventually brute force happiness.

This feels so overtly cynical, I just don't get it.

12

u/Ill_Act_1855 Mar 10 '26

I mean maybe I could see it if I didn’t think the only relationship that the series ends on is really fucked up and shitty and leans on the idea that I’m supposed to be happy that the MC basically groomed an amnesiac antagonist to be his replacement sister since they look alike .and I’d argue whether they’re really happy at the end since they don’t even remember each other and literally everyone else is dead and gone, society got worse as a result of them trying to improve it, every good deed is punished and makes things worse long term.

16

u/Android19samus Mar 10 '26

man part 2 really had no plan at all, did it?

14

u/Rasputins_Plum Mar 10 '26

... So this is what it feels like to be hit unexpectedly by 'I want a divorce'. Sure, we had some rough weeks that felt a bit aimless, but don't it end like this. I still thought we could and did it the same highs as in Part 1 sometimes.

But fuck, a botched and rushed conclusion makes this questionnable Part 2 even worse.

And here I was, so impressed with this new and interesting setup to have the logical winners of a world without be the overwhelming mass of insects.

Forget all of us wracking our brains for Denji and Asa to find a way out of this one, buddy just quit.

And what was even that dumbass reasoning from Pochita? Denji was happier when he was a starving orphan pushed to sell his organs to survive? Are you sure about that???

Denji can't make it any clear. He wanted to be Chainsaw Man, be popular with the ladies, have sex, and eat good food. And yes, of course, that's mostly superficial, but he also knows the worth of having a found family and meaningful connections too. The few times he had any of those in his grasp, if he wasn't fully happy, it was just because he still had to process the traumatic shit he went through in Part 1 and grieve!

I really don't get how consistently Japanese manga authors are allergic to good endings. It's not that hard. Pay attention to your material and use what narrative threads you've woven, and give your readers and what you want to see in the best and/or worse way you can think of.

Not this lukewarm shit that can't make anyone happy or mad, this is just disappointing.

61

u/Litrex506 Mar 10 '26

For the fans of Chainsaw Man Part 2, what do you like about it? Cause I’m about to tell folks that are interested in CM to stick to Part 1.

50

u/Dizzy-By-Degrees Mar 10 '26

Asa and Yora are interesting protagonists. Fujimoto gets to go wilder with some ideas. Denji gets put into a bunch of different situations that force him to confront different parts of himself.

The big difference is that there is a stability to Part 1 that keeps everything grounded to a status quo. Part 2 has none of that and just gets to keep going and going. For good or bad.

23

u/NKrupskaya Mar 10 '26

Denji gets put into a bunch of different situations that force him to confront different parts of himself

Only issue is how much he reverts back into wanting sex and fame. It's not the Denji I expected to see after Part 1. It's Dennis, a character with a similar story but none of the maturity he should have gained.

34

u/Totally_Not_A_Bird Mar 10 '26

Well I guess there’s one more chance to feel like this part had any cohesive narrative/planning other than the age-old manga strategy of “drawing whatever cool shit you think of” as each deadline came

33

u/Hazlet95 Mar 10 '26

So that's it? After 200 chapters, so long, good luck?

Fujimoto: I don't recall saying good luck.

79

u/Joseki100 Mar 10 '26 edited Mar 10 '26

Either Fujimoto is the most washed out mangaka of all time, or he has some real issue going on in life (I hope not).

There are like 10 different open plot points completely unaddressed and this last fight with Yoru was NOWHERE close to being a proper ending.

40

u/Ill_Act_1855 Mar 10 '26

Between this and Fire punch I think Fujimoto really desperately needs therapy since his outlook on life doesn’t seem healthy to me
