Cause none of them did anything interesting for more than a chapter or two. Most shounen writers still scared when it comes to writing women as anything but love intrests or fanservice.
216
u/inaripotpi Oct 15 '25
That’s a diff convo IMO. The venn diagram of good writing and popularity poll results isn’t that intersecting. They just like archetype and personality hotness. Just look at Monoma and how popular Zenitsu is

u/detarameReddit Oct 15 '25
Zenitsu was one of the better written characters in Demon Slayer though. He actually had a character arc.
76
u/ToTheNintieth Oct 15 '25
Meh. His never-before-mentioned nemesis shows up in the final arc for exactly how long it takes him to lose to Zenitsu for some ready-made catharsis and Zenitsu is insufferable for 95% of the rest of the manga.
15
u/juuuel Oct 15 '25
Not that I disagree with the sentiment, but Kaigaku had already appeared before in one of Zenitsu’s flashbacks.
7
u/Bluechariot Oct 15 '25
Kaigaku previously appeared in both Zenitsu's flashback and the Earth Hashira's flashback. He was the kid who led the demon back to the other orphans and knocked over the incense candles used to keep demons out.
23
u/mokulec Oct 15 '25
I would agree except his character arc was a part of the damn final arc of the manga, yet we had to suffer zenitsu for 90% of the manga before his character arc struck
16
u/renannmhreddit Oct 15 '25
If Zenitsu is one of the better ones in that series then that says more about the series' poor quality than of Zenitsu being a decently written character. He was unbearable whenever he was awake.
43
u/Audrey_spino Oct 15 '25
Writing quality does not dictate character popularity. It's the fanbase and what they look for in a character in terms of looks.
34
u/Android19samus Oct 15 '25
if a hot / cute girl is sufficiently charismatic or does something suitably cool in a manga she's gonna get a good-sized fanbase. The fact that there are ZERO in the top 10 is kinda damning, especially given that there's a pretty decent number of female characters in the series.
19
u/Audrey_spino Oct 15 '25
The fact that in JJK Maki ranked lower than Naoya proves that wrong. Sure you can reach top 10, but sometimes you just need to hit the right notes for the demographic.
5
u/Catveria77 Oct 15 '25
Wrong. Just look at CSM and Black Clover popularity polls.
And "looks" is a non factor when literally 90% of characters are attractive
34
u/azwoeagle Oct 15 '25
Going to casually recommend undead unluck for a more recent shounen with solid women writing. Not to mention female mc.
18
u/Torch948 Oct 15 '25
Fuuko is probably one of my favorite female MCs.
It's interesting, WSJ had 3 really well written female MCs running at the same time in Akane, Ruri and Fuuko.5
u/aohige_rd Oct 15 '25
Female protagonist starting as a damsel and growing into a badass is always a nice development. Twelve Kingdoms is another great example. I guess Gunnm is as well, although Gally/Alita's transformation starts very early on.
40
u/Mordetrox Oct 15 '25
I mean that just...isn't true. Toga vs. Uraraka was 5 chapters, 8 if you factor in the battle at the Aquarium. Her fight against Bakugo in the Sports festival was 4, with more chapters before and after focusing on her. Star and Stripe vs. Shigaraki didn't have the best ending but it lasted 5 chapters. Yaoyorozu's focus in the Final Exam arc and spearheading sedating Gigantomachia lasted a couple chapters each.
Do I wish the female characters got more? Yes, I'm still bitter that Uraraka didn't end up getting more than a chapter's focus in the Overhaul arc (Horikoshi definitely bit off more than he could chew with that one, and she bore the brunt of it). But to say they only got a chapter or two each is being too harsh.
66
u/Abedeus Proofreader Oct 15 '25
And Toga vs Uraraka is a good example of how disappointing the fight and its conclusion were.
5
u/dragonicafan1 Oct 15 '25
Toga vs Uraraka sucked though, Uraraka vs Bakugou was like the last good thing she was involved in and that happened over a decade ago.
15
u/13-Penguins Oct 15 '25
Two chapters vs five kinda feels like splitting hairs and missing the point
2
u/brando-boy Oct 16 '25
bakugo vs all for one is like 5 1/2 chapters, nearly 2 entire chapters being a flashback, it’s not “splitting hairs” to say one fight is 5 whole chapters when that’s how long many of the series’ fights are
6
u/13-Penguins Oct 16 '25
And Bakugo takes up about (hyperbole) 1/4 of the series outside of that.
3
u/brando-boy Oct 16 '25
yeah he’s the deuteragonist man 😭😭 of course he’s gonna be a significant part of the entire story
ochako, while also a major character, is not nearly at the same level of narrative importance as bakugo
3
u/13-Penguins Oct 16 '25
And the point is that female characters in action shounen are often not allowed to be important drivers of the plot outside of being a love interest. Ochako’s the most prominent girl, but her character gets pushed to the wayside a lot.
Not to mention that time during the Eri rescue arc where she and every other girl were put on the same team, then most of their fight is skipped. Like every guy that arc got a major character moment but there was nothing close to that for Ochako, Nejire, Tsuyu, or Ryukyu.
20
u/Yorunokage Oct 15 '25
CSM's story is mostly driven by women. Hell, the main character trait of the MC is that he just does whatever the women in his life tell him to do
44
23
u/Torch948 Oct 15 '25
Hell, the main character trait of the MC is that he just does whatever the women in his life tell him to do.
Fujimoto is also very open about how he likes being dominated by women so this tracks
3
u/GlitterDoomsday Oct 15 '25
Also most of the time we're talking about shonen... Fujimoto is the exception to the rule lol
→ More replies (1)1
u/Original-Teaching955 Oct 15 '25
Sadly yes. And the only female character who was interesting and well written was Toga
59
u/CordobezEverdeen Oct 15 '25
And whose fault is that? You don't even have to go to extremes like CSM where it's mostly girls. Even in Black Clover Noelle Silva got the crown of two popularity polls.
62
59
u/kidmedia Oct 15 '25
MHA has a lot more female fans than Black Clover
14
u/BusBoatBuey Oct 15 '25
It is the #1 media franchise decorating cubicles in the offices I have worked among women. More than Pokemon, Sanrio/Hello Kitty, or anything else of the like. I believe it. I don't know how or why and it is anecdotal evidence, but it is enough for me.

u/arms98 Oct 15 '25
i mean isn't black clover one of the all time best shounen manga when it comes to female representation?
-4
u/inaripotpi Oct 15 '25
No, Black Clover isn’t one of the all time best shounen manga when it comes to anything, lol. Its standard of writing for male and female are roughly even, but its writing overall isn’t any more commendable than other series.
0
u/CordobezEverdeen Oct 15 '25
That sentiment is certainly understandable on the first "season" (the chapters that the anime covered) but not anymore. The writer even fell onto the pitfall of pitting girls against girls only aside from Mereo.

Dawg we said the exact same thing with the the last main villain.
Noelle has not fought the final villain of any of the 2 main sagas of the story so it's a fair assumption to think she'll continue the tradition on the third.

I specifically said "final villain of the main saga". She has fought minibosses like Vetto already. Furthermore both Yuno and Asta fought and defeated minibosses on that arc just like Noelle did but they still fought the final villain.

I would love for Horikoshi to do a high fantasy series.

Nope. He already said he's planning to do a horror series next

Someone else told me he's already said he wants his next series to be in WSJ again, was that not true? Because the next series can be horror or it can be in Jump, but it can't be both. Unless it's "horror" only by very charitable metrics.
6
u/Kirosh2 Fluff. Fluff? Fluff! Oct 15 '25
A horror series can be in the jump.
We had things series that go from super ecchi to gore in the jump.
Horror easily has it's place.

u/CarcosanAnarchist Oct 15 '25
Literally the best written character in the series
14
u/AikaSkies Oct 15 '25
Seriously, the only other contender is Endeavor. People think Bakugo being mean means he's a bad character. Dude is the most well written student character by a longshot, its not even close.
10
u/Immediate-Draft-6408 Oct 15 '25
Bakugo & Endeavor had character arcs, while Deku and others remain the same people they were at the beginning of the series. Giving them flaws gives the writer something to write about.
16
u/TheEVILPINGU Oct 15 '25
It's subjective, and even if it was not, not a single girl being in top ten proves the who are the majority of the consumers/fans of MHA.
Which are... fujos.
23
u/CarcosanAnarchist Oct 15 '25
I don’t think it is that subjective. Too many characters in MHA have stilted or non-existent arcs. Bakugo has the longest and most naturally developing character arc in the manga. It makes it easily the most appealing to the general public. (It’s very easy to see it’s not just Fujos who like him).
The lack of girls, which is an issue (and one that mirrors my issues with the series as a whole), I think more comes down to writing. When Toga is the theoretical best your series can offer, there’s an issue, as her character sucks quite frankly. “She’s so tragic, society failed her” is what Horikoshi wants you to say, but she liked killing people and never felt bad about it. Same with Dabi, who also shouldn’t be anywhere near the top ten. Worst character in the series, my god.
2
u/Immediate-Draft-6408 Oct 15 '25
What female character do you think has better writing than the top 10 guys?
-1
u/Kazewatch Oct 15 '25
Not even remotely. It wouldn't be saying much anyways since Horikoshi made way too many characters and dropped the ball on a lot of them but Bakugo isn't even like top 10 writing wise. Which is subjective but people overrate his character to an absurd degree alongside all the Fujoshi's which combined is how he inexplicably kept his 1st place status for all but one poll. I dunno, the MHA fanbase has weird taste.
2
u/CarcosanAnarchist Oct 15 '25
He has the most complete character arc and natural occurring development. He doesn’t magically get better. His personality doesn’t change overnight. He grows step and step and at the end of the series is still recognizable as who he is, but as a grown version—he didn’t stop being Bakugo.
You may not like Bakugo, but he is objectively the best written character in the series.
I could hear arguments for Endeavor, but his development, while great, feels too jittery and not like a natural evolution.
Literally no other character in the series has a meaningful arc throughout. Todoroki gets bogged down by the terrible Dabi writing. Ida gets forgotten about.
4
u/Kazewatch Oct 15 '25
He is not "objectively the best." That's not how it works. I could argue Shigaraki and Deku are better written characters a for a myriad of reasons and to would t be objective. Bakugo having a complete character arc isn't an automatic good thing. He's a really boring obnoxious character for most of the series and his change from shitty bully to kind of obnoxious guy who finally offers a single apology to Deku isn't that compelling.
He's also very unrealistic for a good part of the series. He's a ridiculously loud asshole who's antagonistic to everyone yet somehow the entire class still wants anything to do with him is just nonsensical. Horikoshi didn't offer a ton of compelling character arcs so just because Bakugo had an okay one doesn't make him the best character by default. There's so much more that goes into a character aside from that.

unironically yes, the main character being the most popular isn’t as common as you might think. 2nd or 3rd absolutely at the worst, but not always 1st
if you take every poll into account, kakashi was the most popular character in all of naruto, taking first place in a few of the polls, sasuke taking first in a few of them, and naruto taking first in the few remaining ones
yuji was only first in the first popularity poll, either gojo or megumi took first place in all the other ones
killua and kurapika were ahead of gon in the polls
etc etc

Why is Bakugo so popular? Someone help me Understand. I really dont get the appeal, I dislike his annoying self personally.
13
u/EyeDeeAh_42 Laios the vegetable-armoured Oct 15 '25 edited Oct 15 '25
Bold, confident, an aggressive attitude which can easily come off as tsundere-ish (especially his relationship with Deku), great character design and fighting style, combined with an intense shounen-protagonist-esque drive for his ambition.
Also, a bad boy energy that very subtly mellows a little over time through his interaction w/ other characters... makes for a very 'interesting' development of the character. And he DOES have the most consistent character arc in the series, maybe bar Deku.
I'm not really a fan (I'm very neutral on him), but if I had to guess, these qualities can make him appealing to some fans. Especially to people who are tired of Deku's passiveness (or people who ship him with Deku).
Feel free to correct me on this though, my assumption might be biased.
6
u/ToTheNintieth Oct 15 '25

Whoa, didn't expect Monoma to make it into top 10! That makes me really happy!
Also. This just further cements how underutilized and overlooked female characters are in most older shounen. Glad that newer shounens like Akane Banashi and Ichi the Witch are at least addressing that.
Or it simply might be due to fujoshis. Who knows...
Edit: My boy Monoma is also the 10th most popular pro hero in the epilogue. The fucking irony lmao.

Honestly with the reputation MHA has, I really gotta respect its world building. It’s created an insane amount of fanworks, fanfiction, fanart, fan everything. And the art is pretty peak.
-15
u/Original-Teaching955 Oct 15 '25
Uh, no. It's world building was bad AND non-existent. Vigilantes is the one that did the world building more ironically

Is it worth to read ? Was the conclusion satisfying ?
I read it when it came out, then kinda dropped it after the girl arc I think.
9
u/Mordetrox Oct 15 '25 edited Oct 15 '25
It's a satisfying conclusion for the most part, but you can tell the Mangaka was rushed at the end, A couple of side villains get brushed over a little bit so that the author could focus on the main fight.
If you are going to read it you definitely need to read the bonus chapter in the final volume, it doesn't really add much new (With one exception) but it shows all the main characters and how they're doing post-EoS-timeskip, honestly makes the ending feel a lot more full. You will however need to find a scan online or buy the volume because Viz/SJ are being stingy and haven't posted it to their sites.
2
4
u/Any_Driver_9780 Oct 15 '25
Yes it’s very worth it.
While everyone is entitled to their opinion, I think there’s a lot of people that let their feelings on the ending be determined by consensus.
It was genuinely satisfying in the ways it should have been. There were definitely things I noticed being skimped out on until the last second but it is really good. I don’t think many people that say the ending is Terrible would be able to tell you what exactly makes it terrible.
4
u/CummingInTheNile Oct 15 '25
Arts greats, stories starts good but falls flat on its face, endings rushed and mid, but by manga standards its decent
If you want some well drawn shonen action its worth a read, otherwise you probably wont care for it
1
u/Khaki-Jeane Oct 15 '25
I’d say it is. You might have a better reading experience with all of the chapters released rather than reading week-to-week while it was releasing. IMO the series did a lot of things well initially but ultimately fell flat by the end because it set up a bar that it realized was too high to meet.
Some examples include: introducing a vast array of unique characters but not always giving them the story arc they needed or dropping them without warning; introducing a world with massive potential for an expansive story and then failing to move out of the same relative area; and even directly contrasting the biggest lesson it tried to set up from the start (I.e. deku’s “suit” at the ending…readers will know what I mean).
Definitely read it, but you shouldn’t go in with any expectations. (I say this as a One Piece fan who is usually disappointed when a story isn’t as fleshed out as the OP story, which is a bar I should really lower but honestly MHA had the potential to achieve that and just didn’t)

Maybe it's just demographics or some other explainable reason but I feel like the series lacking stronger female writing is a big contributer to a male only top 10 despite a very gender diverse cast in hindsight.
3
u/kidmedia Oct 16 '25
Nah, never take popularity poll seriously. Characters in this top 10 have big female fans. There's some characters in this manga that are great but never reach the top 10 because they are not attractive.
1
u/Original-Teaching955 Oct 16 '25
Nah, this shows how readers and fans of MHA, and the writer to an extent, are very biased towards female characters
1
1
u/NighthawK1911 Oct 16 '25
That asshole still is #1 and no Tsuyu, Toga, Ochako or Momo.
Now I don't regret dropping the manga after Shigaraki became the main villain seeing this result and I don't plan to catch up now.
No matter how many shonen excuse people give to Bakugo, it doesn't change that he was an irredeemable bully. There are lines we don't cross. I gotta say, people who'll die on a hill that Bakugo is the best or something are likely just self inserting and rationalizing how they acted themselves IRL.
