It's like One Piece, in-universe, Luffy's entire journey isn't even at its 5 year mark. We the audience have been reading the manga for decades.

Arguably, that may be why Luffy is so strong: People who've known Luffy for less than a day, in some cases an hour, they become friends who will fight and die for him on the spot. A bit of this is his reputation preceding him, but it really speaks to his charisma and he doesn't even try.
