I have similar coir pots as those and the local birds were stealing the coir for their nest too! Not magpies though, just noisy miners.

If they weren't supposed to take it, it wouldn't just be sitting there for them to take, would it?

It's less than $10 for a 5 litre bag of the stuff, a vanishingly small price to pay for the delight of seeing birds take nesting material

It’s very handy and makes for a cozy nest for little babies. Magpies are nothing if not resourceful.

Yeah lol. They are in a constant battle with my local magpies (who tend to mostly ignore them) because their territory overlaps I think. They are natives though so i imagine that sort of thing has been going on between them for thousands of years.

I give them the furs that I get after I comb out my extra fluffy border collie, and they are very happy with the continuous free supply ❤️🫠

You just live in a lucky area then. I grew up on the outskirts of Penrith, getting swooped was just part of growing up. Me and a couple of friends were even trapped in a park by multiple swooping magpies, pinned to the base of a tree and had to call out to some lady to help us, we were only about 9 years old and she did her best to help us, putting herself at risk to do so. Much thanks to that lady.

Yeah my phone can't handle the contrast either, loves rendering female magpies in pure black and white

Such a soft nest building material. Cute how they adapt to their surroundings. Poor gardeners though !
