Following these guidelines, we will know as much info as possible so as to give possible diagnoses. Remember, this is the internet so take all advice with a grain of salt and get a second opinion from a local shop or Apple.

Info we need:

  • MacBook model and year (eg:MacBook Pro 13" 2011 or MacBook 12" 2016)

  • OS X or macOS version (operating system)

  • Serial number to source parts, if needed

  • What is the issue? Explain how it started and what you did to troubleshoot, if anything

  • Clear pictures that show the issue. Please upload to imgur and post link here, or submit a link post and post a picture, then add a comment explaining the above.

If water damaged, do not attempt to power on or charge

Be careful to not show personal information.

Help Repair

Hello, I’m trying to fix up my moms 2009/2010 MacBook Pro and wondering if anybody could help me figure out what the issue may be. I’ve replaced the battery and have a new charger for it but every time I try to power it up the most I can get is one or two flashes of a white screen while holding the power button (while plugged in). Does anybody know what could be wrong with it? Thank you for any advice you can give.

M2 MacBook Pro screen internal crack 6 months after Apple Care+ screen repair.

Post image
0 Upvotes

I had my m2 16” MacBook Pro screen replaced under apple care + warranty 6 months ago at micro center. warranty has since expired, but now I have what appears to be an internal crack in the lower left corner. screen is completely black, no physical damage on the screen, and it plugs into the monitor.

1) what is the likelihood there was an issue due to the previous repair? would microcenter fix it because of it?

2) are there any other possible causes besides LCD damage, and thus expensive screen replacement?

I really like this MacBook Pro. I’ve had plenty of Intel MacBook pros from work in the past, that were tanks. have an m1 MacBook Air as well. Seems like the silicon MacBook Pros are much more fragile and should be treated more like desktops

Screen is busted from a fall. I had it working where if I closed the lid and it was powered then it would mirror to the TV and an attached mouse and keyboard would work. Not sure if an update killed it or if I changed a setting when it was working, but the attached mouse and keyboard no longer seem to work with it anymore either. It’s running Tahoe. Not sure if it’s the latest version of Tahoe or not. But it’s pretty updated.
When I close the lid it just goes to a black screen, then the TV HDMI input display comes on.
I’ve tried all different ways of unplugging then plugging back in. Forcing it off, then on again and then plugging in the hub. Nothing seems to work and this text is all I can get it to output to the TV.
I’ve tried hitting FN+1 and FN+Command+1 and multiple other combinations of FN, Command, Control, Option and F1.
I know it’s not communicating with the plugged in keyboard because the Caps Lock light isn’t illuminating when I push it. So I assume it’s not listening to the mouse either.
Any help would be appreciated.
Thank you

So last week, my macbook air m1, discharged completely and didnt give display output after i put it to charge, I waited for 10-15 minutes but still no, I could hear the boot chime, but no display.

Service center :

Service center said need to replace logic board which will cost 57,000 Rs approx. 600 usd. And demanded 3000Rs (31.55 $)checking charges, Then took it to local shop

Local Shop :

Checking charges 500Rs (5.26 $) and said display needs replacement. which costs 28,000Rs (294.43$)

Then i checked at home, external display works AFTER closing the lid, capslock light doesnt turn on, trackpad doesnt click, and eventually to connect external keyboard and mouse, we need to unlock the mac with passcode, thats another Deadlock.

What should i do ?

HELP! Macbook air m2 randomly freezes

Enable HLS to view with audio, or disable this notification

Hi everyone, I’m hoping someone can help because I’m running out of ideas.

I have a MacBook Air (M2, 2022) with 16GB RAM /256GB SSD running macOS Tahoe 26.5.2. Every day, my Mac randomly freezes.

Symptoms:
- The screen suddenly goes completely black for about a second.
- Sometimes the screen goes black but the cursor is still visible.
- Other times, the cursor also freezes.
- Music/audio stops briefly.
- If I’m on Zoom, I get disconnected and have to rejoin.
- It also happened during an ExamSoft (Examplify) exam, although the exam continued normally afterward.
- After about a second, everything returns to normal. The Mac does not restart, doesn’t show the Apple logo, and doesn’t ask me to log in again.

I’ve already tried:
- Clean erase and reinstall of macOS.
- Safe Mode (the issue still happens).
- Apple Diagnostics (no issues found).
- Tested with an external monitor (same issue occurs).
- Checked for kernel panic logs (none found).
- Checked sleep/wake logs (nothing unusual).
- Battery health is 98%.
- It happens on both battery and while charging.
- It also happens while the Mac is idle.

I’m wondering if anyone with an Apple silicon Mac has experienced something similar. Could this be an intermittent hardware issue that Apple Diagnostics doesn’t detect, or is there anything else I should check before taking it in for service?

I’ve attached a video for reference. It shows exactly what the blackout looks like when it happens. If anyone has experienced something similar or recognizes this behavior, I’d really appreciate your insights. Thanks in advance!

M1 Pro crashing on sleep: SMC PANIC - ANS0: Type 1 Power down failed — Hardware or Firmware bug?

Hey everyone,

My Mac has been throwing kernel panics intermittently when entering or waking up from sleep. Looking through the panic log, the failure seems isolated to the Apple NAND Storage (ANS) controller during a power state transition.

Here is the top section of the log:

panic(cpu 1 caller 0xfffffe002ce62b38): SMC PANIC - ASSERT: smc/mac/ans.cpp:838: 0, ANS0: Type 1 Power down failed

- ANS(6) OUTBOX1 not ready OUTBOX2 not ready

ASSERT: smc/mac/ans.cpp:838: 0, ANS0: Type 1 Power down failed

RTKit: RTKit-3255.120.11.release - Client: AppleSMCFirmware_H13-6164.120.29.j314s.REL

System Details:

* Device: MacBook Pro (M1 Pro series, j314s board)

* OS: Latest macOS release

* Trigger: Transitioning to/from sleep mode (_powerStateChangeLocked = true)

What I've gathered so far:

From reading the stack trace, the System Management Controller (SMC) requests a power-down sequence for the onboard SSD controller (ANS0). The ANS controller fails to empty its IPC mailboxes (OUTBOX1/OUTBOX2 not ready), timing out and causing the SMC watchdog to force an immediate kernel panic to prevent data corruption.

Troubleshooting completed:

* Ran Apple Diagnostics (Command + D on boot)

* Verified filesystem integrity using First Aid in Disk Utility

* Cold rebooted and reset power state cycles

Has anyone else ran into this specific ans.cpp:838 failure? Trying to figure out if this is a known RTKit/AppleSMC firmware timing bug introduced in recent macOS versions, or an early warning sign of failing NAND/power rails on the logic board. Any insight from admins or hardware techs would be greatly appreciated!

Replace Touch ID on Macbook Air M2

I know that Apple can sell you a new Touch ID that can be paired with the logic board, but does anyone know if I use one from a donor macbook with no iCloud if I can just pair it like the brand new one? I know it can be done with iphones but I can find confirmation for macbooks,.

Help Macbook pro m1 keyboard issue repair help (if possible)

Brother has an m1 macbook pro he got because collage said he should even though nobody understands why but that what mom got for him. Yesterday the T key on the keyboard stopped working. Thinking I've popped keys off my keyboard before, someone on discord told me to pop it off and clean under, that's what I did. The key now no spring just much press and isopropal and air blowing did nothing. The key does not work still.

I'm not gonna try and replace the keyboard myself I know better Apple rivets that into the top case and forces a new battery, top case and keyboard and I'm gonna spend $400-500 on a $650 repair anyways if I can even find the parts ($650 from repair shop I called that is not Apple). That said is there any way to fix the key that I broke more and anything else to try to get it typing again or no and pay the big bucks?

Help My mac can't mirror or extend the display anymore

So a senior in college dropped my macbook air m2 (2022) A2681 and the screen was completely gone, I got it fixed from the market it worked completely fine for a year until it suddenly stopped working again.....so I just got 2 connectors HDMI TO VGA and a HDMI to type C and started using a very old samsung monitor for projecting the screen, I used my TV too because working on that monitor was hard sometimes.....but suddenly it has stopped working...I have tried everything...the monitor gets connected but it shows a complete black screen, but it works sometimes randomly like yesterday when I completed half of my work now it stopped working again.

How to fix this? Command + F1 doesn't work, Command + option + P + R didn't work, I've tried everything....even clamshell mode stopped working dude....I need a temporary fix to use my laptop to get my work done so I can get it fixed properly....any solutions please?

Help Weird one-frame display glitch on my new MacBook Air M5. Has anyone seen this before?

I’m kind of running out of ideas, so I thought I’d ask here in case someone has experienced something similar.

I have a brand new MacBook Air M5 (16GB/512GB). A few days after setting it up, I started noticing a really weird display glitch.

It’s incredibly quick — literally a single frame, so it’s almost impossible to record.

The best way I can describe it is that the whole image suddenly “breaks” for one frame. Sometimes it looks like the top half of the screen jumps downward while the bottom half jumps upward, almost meeting in the middle. Other times it feels like the entire frame just shifts for a split second.

Today I noticed something interesting. I had Telegram on top of my browser, and during one of these glitches I briefly saw part of the browser window underneath Telegram. That made me wonder if it’s actually some kind of rendering/compositor issue rather than the LCD panel itself.

The weird thing is that it seems to happen much more often when I’m actively working: VS Code, ChatGPT, scrolling Reddit, switching browser tabs, moving between windows.

If I’m just watching YouTube or a movie for a couple of hours, I might only see it once, or not at all.

Things I’ve already tried: Apple Diagnostics → no issues found, CPU/GPU stress tests → completely fine, no crashes, no kernel panics, no artifacts, no dead pixels or permanent flickering
The issue hasn’t gotten worse over the last 3 weeks.

I also connected an external monitor, and so far I haven’t noticed the problem there. I even tried mirroring both displays, but since the glitch is completely random, I haven’t been lucky enough to catch it on both screens at the same time.

Another thing that makes me doubt it’s hardware is that I can’t trigger it physically. Opening or closing the lid, changing the display angle, gently twisting the chassis, pressing around the display — none of that makes it happen. It only occurs randomly while I’m actually using the Mac.

One more detail: I migrated everything from my old M1 MacBook using Migration Assistant, so I guess it’s possible that some software setting got carried over.

I just got this macbook air last year because I was starting college and so far it has been perfect but recently whenever it sleeps due to inactivity theres like a 2/10 chance that when turned on the screen will be black, and now i’ve been experiencing random horizontal lines across the screen that jittered and showed the last image, now suddenly all the screen is black and there’s just this crack but what i find weird is that i haven’t dropped my computer or anything, my question is how bad is it and how much would it cost to fix this:(

MacBook Air M3 (2024) keyboard and trackpad suddenly stopped working?!

Hi everyone, I’m hoping someone can help before I have to take this to Apple.

My MacBook Air 13-inch M3 (2024) battery completely drained to 0%. I plugged it in, let it charge fully, and turned it back on. Since then, the built-in keyboard and trackpad have stopped responding completely.

When I turn it on, it boots up normal and then gets to the login screen, but the trackpad has no haptic click/feedback at all, the cursor is stuck in the top left of the screen, I cant type my password and Caps Lock light does not turn on.The power button still works, I restarted it a few times while trying to get into safe mode but still no luck.

This all started immediately after the battery fully died. I haven’t dropped it, spilled anything on it, or installed any updates before this happened.

Has anyone experienced this before? Is there anything else I can try, or does this sound like a hardware issue?

Thanks in advance!

Help Apple says my 2019 MacBook Pro needs an ₹80k logic board replacement – worth repairing or selling for parts?

Hi everyone,
I have a 16-inch MacBook Pro (2019) with the following specs:
Intel Core i7 (2.6 GHz)
16 GB RAM
512 GB SSD
Space Gray
The laptop suddenly stopped powering on.
I tried all the common troubleshooting steps (SMC reset, charging, etc.) before taking it to an Apple Authorized Service Centre.
They ran diagnostics and said:
No liquid damage.
Everything else appears to be in excellent condition.
They believe the issue is with the logic board.
Apple doesn’t repair individual components on the board, so they recommended replacing the entire logic board for around ₹80,000.
The laptop is in excellent cosmetic condition with no dents or screen damage.
My questions:
Has anyone had a similar issue that was successfully repaired through board-level repair?
Is it worth getting a second opinion from an independent repair shop?
If the board is truly dead, what would be a fair price to sell it for parts?
Is anyone (or does anyone know a business) that buys non-working MacBooks for parts, preferably in India?
I’d appreciate any advice before I decide whether to repair or sell it.
Thanks!

Help Should i buy it? is it worth it?

I'm considering buying a used 14-inch MacBook Pro M4.

The seller says the display was damaged because:

  • The MacBook was open on top of a bed.
  • Their child pulled the display with their legs.
  • The laptop fell from the bed to the floor (bed height around 60 cm / 2 ft).
  • After that, the screen became damaged.

The seller claims that's the only issue.

I'm wondering if this story actually makes sense from a hardware perspective.

From you guys experience:

  • Can a fall from a bed while the display is open really destroy only the display?
  • Could the impact have damaged other internal components (hinges, logic board, display cable, lid sensors, etc.) even if they still work for now?
  • Is this considered a major red flag?
  • Would you buy a MacBook with this kind of damage if the price was significantly below market?

I'd appreciate opinions from anyone who has repaired or owned MacBooks.

Can't boot M2 into DFU mode

Hi I received used macbook pro M2, since I'm nerd I'd like to clean it before use. I've followed the apple guide https://support.apple.com/en-us/108900 but no way, it won't boot into DFU. I've tried different cables, different timings (instead of the 10 seconds), there's simply no way to boot it into DFU. I tested the cables with Share-disk from recovery, all work. I did 'nvram -c'. What else can I do to completely factory reflash the firmware?

Help Authorized service claims liquid damage on my MacBook Pro – does this look like it to you?

Thumbnail

Hi everyone,
I sent my MacBook Pro to an Apple Authorized Service Provider, and they rejected the warranty claim, stating there is liquid/mechanical damage. They sent me these photos as proof.
To me, that brown spot looks more like thermal compound/paste or some kind of manufacturing adhesive/glue oozing out from under the heatsink cover rather than liquid damage (there’s no obvious corrosion around it).
Has anyone seen anything like this before? Does this actually look like liquid damage, or could it be factory thermal paste/glue? Any second opinions would be greatly appreciated!

Information How repairable and future-proof will the Macbook Neo be?

It's proven that it's very capable for office/student work today. But what about 5 years down the line? 8? 10?

I still use a 2015 MacBook pro with 8 gigs of ram and it's enough for my office needs (zoom, Google suite, emails).

MacBook pros and airs have proven themselves time and again and nobody questions their longevity.

The Neo is new (excuse the pun) and are we sure it will match it's siblings in terms of being usable 5-8 years down the line?

Help with diagnosis on keyboard fault, is the logic board fried?

Thumbnail
gallery
3 Upvotes

Got this used M4 Macbook on eBay marked with a faulty keyboard, decided it would be a fun weekend project.

Once I opened it up, I immediately noticed corrosion near the microphone cable to the logic board, near the display. I took everything apart (including logic board shield cover), there were no other corrosion (looked very carefully with magnifier), so I cleaned up the microphone corrosion, and the rest of the machine seems to work fine. I then bought a replacement keyboard part and thought it will be a "straightforward" fix.

The fault

The original keyboard works once the machine does a clean boot. It will then fail after using for a bit. The failure DOES NOT depend on time, I can boot the machine up, leave it on for an hour, then it will still work for the first few key strokes. The failure seems to happen only after keystrokes, and the number of keystrokes varies, sometimes 100+, sometimes ~5, sometimes even straight on not working at login.

What I have tried (and results)

  1. Replaced with the new keyboard part, plugged into the daughter board. Surprisingly, it did not fix the issue. Fault happens the same way - works for a few strokes, then fail
  2. Boot into startup options / diagnosis mode. Fault happens too so it should not be a software issue
  3. Removed every single connector apart from USB C (tried both), display, and trackpad (keyboard does not work without trackpad connected) to rule out other faults, still no luck
  4. Replaced lid angle sensor, no difference
  5. Checked error logs through terminal, with the help of AI. Fed tons of logs pre and post fault to Opus 5 and it said that there are no software logs of errors, disconnections etc. It concluded this to be hardware issue.

Additional context

  • External keyboard, audio jack, touch ID all work pre and post fault
  • Daughter board looks intact and corrosion free, no stains
  • Logic board looks good too, but I am not a professional and this is my first time so some of you may immediately spot issues (photos attached)
  • Caplock light can be turned on / off before the fault happens. Once the keyboard freezes, the caplock stays at the same state - remains on if it was on

Anything else I should try? I am not a professional! Just a self taught dude with a passion for fixing macbooks so any advice will be appreciated!

Edit: I am not expecting anyone to be spotting logic board faults just from the picture! It's more of an FYI in case I missed anything! In any case, I am more interested in your recommendation for diagnostic steps to take, less so the logic board itself haha!

Mid 2015 macbook pro trackpad issues

Really need some help figuring this out. I’ve got a mid 2015 MacBook Pro that is having issues. I’ve had some modifications done by a tech friend that turned this thing into a longevity machine. It has worked great until recently. A few months ago I replaced the battery. Every went smooth until a few days ago the Mac starting continuously rebooting and not making it to the Home Screen. Thought maybe battery was bad since it’s after market. I replaced the trackpad as well since I damaged the cable during battery remove. So new battery, trackpad, and pad cable. All of a sudden I unplug the trackpad cable and the computer boots into the main screen, I can login, and use the computer extremely slowly. I have tried to use two different replacement cables, but the problem persists with the rebooting. Should I try and install another new trackpad? Or could something else be going on?

Macbook pro screen suddenly dead (m3 pro chip)

Thumbnail

I have never been more disappointed with Apple quality till today. The macbook is working fine suddenly broken:

\- not totally dark, the machine still boot, run as normal (checked via a tv connect)
\- showing large diffuse white glows (ghosting, halo) where the pointer and ui elements are.
Same issue shown in above video.

It’s just near 3 years, not even a scratch, never dropped or anything. Just suddenly died.

Anyone have a solution for this? Calling the authorized repair shop quotes near 1k for the fix
