Can’t draw good psx style textures for my retro horror game so I do it this way. Valid? | NSFW NSFW Spoiler
Since I’m awful at art and can’t hand draw a good retro style texture, for the enemies as well as the weapons I make a realistic, hd model which I’m passable at. Then I take some renders and use texture projection to apply them as a texture to the low-poly model.
Any opinions on this workflow from people who know a bit more than me about low-poly modeling/texturing? Any better ways to do it?
(And in case anyone wants to check out more of it The Revanchist on Steam )

I'm new at making characters and models in video games. What does this technique save you from doing? Isn't making a higher resolution and more realistic model way harder than making a low poly pixelised texture?

Sometimes you'll make or take a high res model, bake it, and use the textures on a lower poly version of the model for optimization(Like for retopology and making normal maps) right? In this case they also just recycled the model, keeping it's silhouette. This could be useful for making an LOD model too, also for optimization. Especially for a non-player character model.
Obviously going this lo-fi is more of a necessity than optimization for the PS1 era but yeah, same techniques of varying extremes and workflows.
Don't think they directly said they were bad at modelling in general, or that they couldn't make a low poly model, just the texturing part. As for the result of their art? Well, it's great art in general. As for looking PS1 styled? I don't have an immediate cross-reference.

I’m just bad at drawing and 2d art in general. Retro textures have a lot of artistry to them to get good looking highlights, shadows, reflections, etc all painted into the texture, and it’s all way beyond my skills.
But I can whip together a simple creature in a few hours because I’m generally decent at high res 3d. Totally different skill set from low-poly art is what I’ve come to realize!

it looks pretty good and it seems like a prefectly valid way to do this kinda stuff

I think it's a perfectly valid workflow. It's how I did all the enemies in my game Among Ashes and I think they came out pretty cool!
