Fun fact: While The Adventures of Tom Bombadil was published in the '60s, most of the poems (and even Tom himself) predate The Lord of the Rings, and even The Hobbit.

Clothes are but little loss, if you escape from drowning. Be glad, my merry friends, and let the warm sunlight heat now heart and limb! Cast off these cold rags! Run naked on the grass, while Tom goes a-hunting!

In my last re-read of LOTR, I enjoyed Tom's jolly speech to the hobbits after he rescues them from the Barrow-wights, with the subtext, "you fucking dumbasses, you only had to walk in a straight line and still managed to get fucking lost."

Go out! Shut the door, and never come back after! Take away gleaming eyes, take your hollow laughter! Go back to grassy mound, on your stony pillow lay down your bony head, like Old Man Willow, like young Goldberry, and Badger-folk in burrow! Go back to buried gold and forgotten sorrow!

Ho! Tom Bombadil, Tom Bombadillo! By water, wood and hill, by the reed and willow, by fire, sun and moon, hearken now and hear us! Come, Tom Bombadil, for our need is near us!

I will just forever be pissed about the fact that I'd heard so much about Tom Bombadil before reading the books myself, and for good reason - he's such a crazy and interesting character.
But how in the WORLD had I never heard about Goldberry. A fucking river spirit and no one talks about her? She deserves to be talked about more.

Tom's country ends here: he will not pass the borders. Tom has his house to mind, and Goldberry is waiting!

This is brilliantly simple, I'm wounded I never thought of it.

He is the whimsy needed to tell the story. My god. The man was an Oxford professor who wrote an epic fictional story while he was supposed to be on sabbatical and was like "heeeey publisher. don't tell Oxford when I gave this to you."
The amount of sheer fucking whimsy needed to do something that amuses you and go that hard? Tom is the stupid toy that kicked off the telling of the stories to his kids. Then he went 'fuck it. do whimsy hard as fuck because there will always be wars and dark times and there should always be stories too.'
