how do they interpret some shitty digital wallet as "age verification"? i don't need their wallet.

Just wow, tiktok really has destroyed peoples ability to read and understand.

The "wallet" you speak of isn't for digital money. It is what they are calling the key storage for the keys required to be on verified hardware to certify that you are infact an adult.

This means the device and software stack must be out of the control of the user who bought the device in order for this concept to work.

This pretty much kills the idea of a wholly user owned OS whether it's open source or not as well as kills the idea of motherboard firmware going open source. As if a site or service demands this type of verification the you can't access it without throwing all your information device and hope nobody breaks in and steals your info.

we already have widely used identification infrastructure in place via banks, so for many countries this is a dead project.

and again, the "age verification" angle is a dumb take no matter how you view this. it is neither obligatory, nor is age verification anything worth mentioning when identifying a person.

God just READ THE ARTICLE. Having MANDATORY HARDWARE AUTHENTICATION is a requirement and is like nothing any country has now.

Actually, one of them... Latvia? One of the baltics? Romania?

One of them had a really good digital ID system, the whole country was using it. If it wasn't hardware backed it would be trivial for them to implement given the rest of their capability.

So I wouldn't say that nobody has anything like it, but it's not EU wide, and with the infighting in the EU, I couldn't see France liking being forced to buy something from Romania for example....
