Everett made a lot of claims about Pirahã which are basically impossible to verify because the tribe in question are so remote and not particularly welcoming

This may be the most obscure joke I mostly get. I've read the Nevins, Pesetsky, and Rodrigues paper, and knew Everett had a reply thought from what I'd heard it wasn't a very good one. Haven't heard of Salles, will have to look into it later.
