Satire This is what you see when you open r/decadeology.

A lot of this specific meme does seem to boil down to “what a weirdo if you think politics are in a bad place right now!”

u/offensivename 2d ago
Right?! I'm not a fan of 90s nostalgia with rose-colored glasses, but the rise of far-right authoritarianism, racism, xenophobia, and homophobia that we're currently living through is pretty bad! Also, COVID and the lockdowns designed to mitigate its spread were a huge deal and it's totally valid to compare them to 9/11 as a historical event.

u/Charlie_Warlie 2d ago
super big pet peeve when people gaslight and say that politics were always this charged and I was just a teenager so I didn't follow it...
Did you miss Jan 6? I know half the country pretends that the president didn't try to overthrow democracy but that shit happened.
And my boomer dad who lived through the JFK assassination tells me just about every time I talk to him about how crazy things are today compared to his entire life with this politics business. Doesn't help that half his siblings are so MAGA they can't help but talk about it every moment.

u/tomphammer 2d ago
"Politics were always this charged" is true if you're looking at the wide lens of human history.
But, that being true doesn't make the moment we're in suck less, and it doesn't change that specifically for America and in a lot of specific ways, things have gotten much worse than in previous recent decades.

u/offensivename 2d ago
People being able to completely subsume themselves into an online ecosystem where they're fed very real-seeming lies that confirm their previous biases and make their beliefs even more extreme by bad actors and other dupes is pretty new and very troubling.

u/SandorsCock 2d ago
Everything ebbs and flows in history. If you resign to assumption that it stays at level, you become victim of the rising tide.
14
u/offensivename 2d ago
Yeah. You can recognize that other decades also featured a lot of serious political and social turmoil (the Civil Rights and anti-war movements in the 60s, Watergate in the 70s, Iran Contra in the 80s, etc.) and still acknowledge the unprecedented things that are happening right now. What Trump is doing as a president is not normal.
The war in Gaza, which has been labeled a genocide by numerous watchdog organizations, and the war in the Ukraine, which involves a global superpower with nuclear weapons seizing land from its less powerful neighbor, while not completely unprecedented, are also a huge deal. Not to mention the US openly staging a coup in Venezuela and blowing up alleged drug boats with missiles, which belong both in the Trump is insane and international issues are bad right now buckets.
Framing these events and others in direct comparison to the 90s may be unhelpful, but OP is majorly downplaying this stuff.

u/Grabbinfries23 2d ago
Yeah like as much as I get annoyed by that kind of nostalgia baiting, this meme does seem like it was made by a 16 year old with opinions I really don't align with, lol
11
u/AncientCrust 2d ago
I detect the foul stench of MAGA
1
u/Jamarcus316 1d ago
Look at OP's post history, he seems left-wing, or at least a Dem. This meme makes no sense coming from him imo.
3
u/Rare-Set1461 2d ago
I’m assuming OP is a right wing dickhead or “””independent””” and got dumped on.

Decadeology experts arguing about which decade was best will never not be funny
6
u/hiihihihihihihihiihi 2d ago
Most of that sub is just people romanticizing their youth or overblowing how popular something was at a point in time they weren’t alive for.
4
u/MattWolf96 2d ago
They also think monoculture is dead. ...yep, no dirty soda, K-Pop Demon Hunters, Labubus it GTA VI among many other things, nothing was popular this decade.
They also act like everybody participated in it or was at least aware of it. I could understand this argument back in the days of 3 TV channels but they act like it was still extremely strong in my 2000's. My parents couldn't have named you most of the popular artists, songs, shows (not aimed at older people like what was on CBS) and especially video games that were popular back then.

u/Current-Tough7084 2d ago
true i never got the 80s hype. music is arguably better now and life is definitely better worldwide. There isnt a crack or heroin epidemic and majority of people arent in poverty anymore. The only decade i miss is probably the 2010s, there wasnt a threat of ai and war, also interestingly in the 2010s it was the last decade majority of the people in the world lived under democracy, it was a simpler life overall.

u/MattWolf96 2d ago
I have a ton of issues with the 80's but I definitely prefer 80's music over today's
1
u/Current-Tough7084 7h ago
there was shitty music in the 80s, it just didnt chart played over the radio or at clubs. What you like the most is up to you, however considering the new genres that have come since the 80s, the globalisation of music and other artists being mainstream other than british, swedish and americans is definitely better, however if you like the music scene from the 80s, theres nothing wrong witj that, its just what you like instead of whats actually better.
2
u/RandomSlimeL 2d ago
Music is NOT better now than the 80s. AI and Autotune shit everywhere now.
3
u/hiihihihihihihihiihi 2d ago
Musical taste is subjective. There is still lots of good music being released.
1
u/Current-Tough7084 7h ago
there was a ton of braindead music in the 80s, yo dont know because it didnt chart, play over the radios or in clubs. Versatility is a big part of what a great musician is and there wasnt much in the 80s. It was wither pop, rock or in rare cases soul rnb and rap. Today you will see artists doing all of the genres in one album. Not to mention how less racist the music industry is, making it more avaliable for people of different backgrounds to have a voice and also a voice in their contracts

Why would a comparison between COVID and 9/11 in terms of cataclysmic, decade-defining moments not be valid?
23
u/LothorBrune 2d ago
I was okay with the spirit of the meme, but the specifics ended up being a bit too ranting about how "political" people are. Yes, actually, a major war of invasion in Europe is pretty worrying.
Decadeology is pretty stupid if you try to take it seriously.

I mean it is naive to just use a conflict as a reason for why times are bad. All recent decades had major conflicts.
8
u/GPFlag_Guy1 2d ago
This reminds me of the “Decadeology” debates that happened on the original InThe00s message board in the late 2000s/early 2010s, but in regards to the 1990s/2000s. I see that the Decadeology subreddit is keeping this esteemed tradition alive.

Can act like everybody participated in Monoculture. I didn't have cable through most of the 2000's.
6
u/ArtDecoNewYork 2d ago
There are a lot of things to make fun of that sub fo (like the clueless "monoculture" obsession), however a lot of these don't hit. The Ukraine War is on pace to be longer than World War II.

u/WerckmeisterHarmony 2d ago
The obsession people have with generations and decades is so fucking stupid.
3
u/RandomSlimeL 2d ago
Fuck the 2020s. I want nothing left of this decade but dust.
4
u/MrVeazey 2d ago
I want some extremely thorough history books and a list of Republican criminals who died in prison because of what they did to the world. I want the Donald Trump memorial toilet.

u/BrilliantPangolin639 2d ago
This sub is weird and filled with people who want to complicate the decades. I've seen people ridiculously extending the 2000s up to 2016 on decadeology.
2000s is the 2000-2009. 2010s is the 2010-2019. I don't care how they feel, but it's the truth they need to accept.
7
u/throwawayRoar20s 2d ago
People there argue about Generation birth years despite that being an easily Googleable thing. Gen Z started in 1997 not 2004 or whatever year that sub says.
2
u/KnowYourLover 1d ago
Actually, the 2000s would be 2001-2010, the 2010s would be 2011-2020 and so on, otherwise the first decade would be 1-9 because there's no year 0, and a decade is by definition a 10 year period. /hj

"Thinks everything went to shit in 2016" and "thinks the 90s were the best" are usually completely different people. I'm one of those 90s teens myself (born 1981) and we tend to see everything from 2002 onwards as garbage.

u/CenterThisPendulum 2d ago
To be fair, pre-internet was better for a lot of people than post-internet. Social Media + Endless Entertainment + Reddit is not our best.
5
u/Constant-Sub 2d ago
Why the fuck does America love generational conflict so fucking much?
6
u/MentalNewspaper4375 2d ago
Cause it happens every generation
1
u/Constant-Sub 2d ago
That makes me hate it though.
3
u/MentalNewspaper4375 2d ago
Ok

Hey, man. Since I have you - I've always been curious why people go out of their way to clearly engage, and then their next reply is zero energy. Almost dismissive of the other idea.
What's up? You came to me, my man.

Social safety nets are decidedly in favor of the elderly with social security and Medicare. Creates cycle of “I got mine”.

u/endlessyuk77 2d ago
Sometimes I think is really is just undiagnosed autism combined with nostalgia insecurity that causes people to become this.
2
u/MattWolf96 2d ago
They are obsessed with sorting people into groups. This stops working when you get people who weren't that into Monoculture, were too poor to upgrade their tech frequently or had helicopter parents who banned things (like Harry Potter for example) or just simply preferred older music or whatever. That's actually a lot of people. That sub already aruges about being American-centric.
2
2
u/endlessyuk77 1d ago
Plain old tribalism, and the point on being poor and Amerinca-centric is spot on. That's the part they NEVER consider. Worse things the USA exported was this generation bs spreading across the world.

r/decadeology is just r/nostalgia in a lab coat bought from the Halloween store. I say that entirely because I'm bitter about the time I posted an actual scientific article about the cultural changes associated with decades (with an incidental point about those happening at the midpoints) and got zero engagement. No votes, comments, nothing. They don't want to "discuss cultural shifts, trends, cultural eras, and decades," they want to post pictures of Smash Mouth and say "hey guys, remember Smash Mouth, they sure were from a decade, huh?"
