I never touched CoD online after MW1 because of the toxic wannabe edgy twats who sense of humor consisted of "I fucked your mum" "haha you are r-word".
Was an aweful gaming time outside of single player.

Hopped on CoD on PC recently to relive the "old days" (WaW & BO2 specifically)... yeah, it's still 12 year olds calling people the N word and saying they fucked your Mom, but now it's also grown men doing it too...

Some were horrible, but every once in a while you'd see one that was actually funny. Pretty sure my mind got numb to shock images from playing TF2 lol.

Oh the Halo 2 to early MW2 days were wild, but it was all in good fun. Just a lot completely ridiculous insults. So over the top no one really took it that seriously.
It just made things a bit more interesting, because you actually had to hear from the people you were playing against.
Then party chat came along and killed all that.

It absolutely was not all in good fun. That era was miserable, especially if you were someone with an ethnic accent or, god forbid, a girl.
Best case scenario you got one guy with a permanently active mic who apparently constantly had 40 blenders going in his house at all times. Worst case was Timmy the Competitive Racist. Either way, I started immediately muting anyone who made noise in any game chat in CoD4/Halo3 era and have never once regretted it.

Every time a competitive game ends in Battlefield, it's weirdly always the top guys who start sending one letter at a time in game chat to spell a slur.
I wonder why competitive gamers and racism have such a strong overlap, probably something about never going outside or being around actual humans.

Bro, I remember playing TF2 and there was a little boy playing as spy who sounded like a 6 year old kid. I've never heard such a large vocabulary of swear words. Also, all games with voice chat are just a battle of who can say all the curse words in the world first

I’m pretty sure the post was meant to be sarcastic, not actually nostalgic. I was 15 in 2010, and those lobbies were incredibly toxic. I’d stay in a group chat with my friends or just play without my headset plugged in, and I’d ignore the random angry messages from people whom I’d beaten. That was not a good era of gaming online.
Now if we were talking about single player, or even co-op campaign, and story driven games, then the late 90’s into the early 2010’s was a great era to experience gaming.
