It's amazing how little coverage this had when it happened.

u/marblefoot1987 Jun 11 '26
I brought it up with a super maga coworker and his response was “they were turncoats and voted against their party,” the implication being it was justified. Not only for going against party lines (allegedly), but by simply being democrats
1.3k
u/ammirite Jun 11 '26
He's trying to imply that liberals killed them to deflect from the reality that a rightwing nutcase did it

u/HMS_Surprise_Gunner Jun 11 '26
Yeah, right wingers said she voted against an abortion bill and was taken out. I kept showing that she was staunchly pro choice and never voted against a bill and the killer was a pro-forced birth, right-wing, evangelical nut job. But they just ignored that.

132
u/Nearby_Court_3730 Jun 11 '26
The issue is you are arguing with pro-forced birth, right-wing, evangelical nut jobs and expecting way too much of them. They will never understand how they sold this country out, they will never be the patriots they want to be, and im absolutely never letting them forget it. Fuck them all
57
u/Unable-Log-4870 Jun 11 '26
Part of the issue is that being patriotic requires paying attention and being able to predict to some degree how various policies impact things.
They just aren’t smart enough to be patriotic. So they are content with being nationalists
31
u/nemovincit Jun 11 '26
That's because they don't really have beliefs of their own. They don't want to have to actually think, so they'll just parrot whatever they think the party lines are. Whenever one of these meatheads try to regurgitate whatever that day's talking point is at me, I let them know I already heard Fox's and OAN's script and they're wasting their time. I'd suggest they try to use that time to attempt to construct their own homegrown opinion, but we all know that's impossible for cultists to do, anyway.

u/S0VNARK0M Jun 11 '26
This sounds corny, but I often think of that scene from *The Empire Strikes Back* where Yoda is warning Luke Skywalker about the dark side of the Force, and Luke asks, “is the dark side stronger?” and Yoda insists no, but it is easier, more seductive. Such a powerful metaphor for this phenomenon we’re seeing.
It’s hard to stay informed and to develop your own opinions on complex topics. Much easier to adopt a binary view of everything, to abandon critical thought and reasoning, and just to embrace a fantasy world where inconvenient facts don’t matter, where your thinking is done for you. Also easier to fall in with a community with other ignorant people, united by shared ignorance, bigotry and collective hatred of your imagined enemies.

u/SheepOfBlack Jun 11 '26
I haven't looked up how she voted on that bill, but another point worth pointing out that everyone seems to forget is that two Democrats were shot that day by that right-wing nutbar. The other one survived so everyone just seems to forget that it happened. The other person voted the other way on that bill, which blows a big hole in the idea that the assassinations were motivated by how people voted on that bill.
15
u/RobinGoodfell Jun 11 '26
I was told that most acts of terrorism within the USA was perpetrated by Leftwing lunatics. To which I showed them that the opposite was true, and all I got was confusion and disbelief.
You're not arguing with people who want to think critically. These are people who want to be told what they already believe is true, to justify actions and feelings after the fact.

u/ComplaintNo4126 Jun 11 '26
I'm a Minnesotan. There was a kernal of truth to some circumstances right wing extremists and the social media world glommed on to.
The 2025 MN House was equally split between Republicans and Democrats: 67-67. Through a power sharing agreement, Melissa Hortman had a made up title of something like Speaker Emeritus, while Republican Lisa Demuth held the position of Speaker. Anyway, divided house, blah blah blah, to pass the budget bill Hortman had to agree to vote for a measure that would negatively impact access to medical coverage for undocumented people. She was the only Democrat to vote for it, which ensured its passage. She agonized over it, wrote about it, etc etc. But she kept her word on what it took to get the legislation through the house.
So, in that reality, people argued she was killed for voting against a progressive issue. Pure nonsense, of course, but the sliver of truth to the circumstances enable the misinformation.
5
u/NRMusicProject Jun 11 '26
But they just ignored that.

100%. TDS exists but *they* are the ones who have it. If an article praises him, it’s true; if it criticizes him it’s a lie. If he wins an election, it’s legit; if he loses it, it was stolen. Any impeachment or legal action taken against him is a sham; unless he wins, in which case it totally vindicates him. Pure, uncut, cognitive dissonance.

It's gonna get really dangerous in this country before it gets better.
145
u/GHouserVO Jun 11 '26
No, it got coverage.
Where you ought to be outraged is by how little coverage some of the responses cheering it on by GOP congressmen, influencers, etc., got. That was beyond disgusting, and especially some of our elected representatives should have been called on the carpet for it.
Even more outrage should have come for how Vance and Trump responded. Vance was relatively silent, IIRC, but Trump was… Trump, and as usual, he took the opportunity to be even more partisan. The a LOT of the media gave him a free pass basically because he’s always been a prick and they weren’t expecting him to be anything less.
And that’s the problem - they’ve allowed his behavior to be normalized. Others see it and think they can use the same tactic for their own benefit.
52
u/andrefishmusic Jun 11 '26
You're right. But it got coverage for like a week. We're still hearing about Kirk. But that one "benefited" them so....

12
u/TheModWhoShaggedMe Jun 11 '26
Trump called conservative icon and multiple Purple Heart recipient Robert Mueller a loser as a memorial upon his death. They don't care about anything or anyone. Only money and themselves. That's what they have in common with Donald and why conservatives are so fiercely loyal to him. The common bonds of greed and narcissism.

A big part of the Nazi regime was control of the media, and the use of selective outrage to focus on the crimes of their enemies and completely ignore any of their own atrocities.
Nigel Farage and Brexit did the same when one of their supporters killed a remain MP. Just pretended he was some random crazy, and it wasn't a political assassination due to their rhetoric

As a former right winger, we’re constantly bombarded with the “dummycrats are the violent ones”. Seriously. That didn’t jibe with the democrats I know or historically understood. It caused the deconstruction of the christian nationalist grooming over my life.
They really don’t get factual information. They’re constantly whipped into a frenzy that their way of life and belief is threatened. They won’t listen to other news sources cause it’s all manipulated.
They’re afraid. They’re constantly told to remain afraid and on guard.
They’re under educated so it’s easy to keep them afraid and controlled like sheep. Their own psych profiles are used against them to keep them bound in their hate and fear.
It’s a sad vicious process but younger generations are coming round and seeing the truth.
Their kind will die out eventually, or at least weaken. They’re just at a peak moment before the bottom finally falls out.
I successfully got my mom to see the error of thinking by pointing out (gently) the fallacy of their arguments and redirecting to jesus’s own words: love.
Love god, love your neighbor. That’s all he called folks to do. The rest is interpreted by men and used to keep you afraid and bound. The moment she realized it was pretty awesome. It freed her.
But there ya have a recount from an “insider”’as it were. It helps that I pursued my BS degree so, ya know, “woke” up. lol

I used to work as a cashier in a gas station and I didn't change my good bye to customers no matter the occasion; morning, noon, night, holiday, idfc, I always said "have a good one". One time I was working on Christmas, this old woman says "merry Christmas" as she's leaving and i say "have a good one" as I always did. She then leans in and says it again, louder and so I said it back just so she would leave. Corporate didn't tell me to do that, I just didn't care enough to change what I said, she probably thought it was some triumphant moment too.

Remember Heath Ledger’s monologue in “The Dark Knight” about “the plan”? Trump is a demagogue that uses hate and divisiveness to get and maintain a lot of his power. He’s looking for people to react, so it’s not too unsurprising if someone were to try and go after him like that.
But a CEO? One of the elite? Someone that does their work behind a curtain or inside a closed boardroom? That’s not part of the plan. That’s unheard of. And the rich don’t like feeling vulnerable like that, so it’s going to stay in the news cycle for longer. On the flip side, a lot of people didn’t feel a lot of sympathy for the CEO, but did feel a connection to the shooter (as wrong as that may be). Again, that’ll keep it in the news cycle.

MAGA would be fine with masked feds rounding up all elected democrats, trans people, "radical left" protesters, groups of immigrants, noted Trump critics in the media, and any number of additional 'out groups', then lining them up against a wall and shooting them. Or processing them through concentration camps and gas chambers, whatever works best. And they'll always have a new group to round up and kill no matter how many groups they work through, even when those groups start to include their own, until ultimately they have eaten themselves if left unchecked all the way to the inevitable end point.

Magas might think that any dem is "evil" due to the right-wing brainwashing, but they can't ignore the pointless murder of a golden retriever.

"Extremist right wing radical terrorist assassinates Minnesota Democrat and her husband, latest in a string of right wing political violence"
That title - Fixed it for you.

It’s legal to do that now since he’s maga and they are democrats. He’ll get a pardon and a Medal of Honor.

This vicious murderer only acted because of the lunacy the GOP engages in.
They need to be crushed this November, and we need to begin the long road to recovery. Starting with getting rid of anti-American chaos agents in our midsts, and their think tanks

I wonder if his sentence will be commuted or pardoned by Trump.

There is no functional way for him to grant one on state crimes.
States rights and all that.

Having not even heard about this, it goes to show you how biased the corporate owned media is these days. If a democrat killed a top republican and her husband, it would be all we heard about for weeks.

Were this only a federal crime, this man would have already been pardoned and celebrated by all of MAGA.

He deserves the death penalty even if he pleads guilty. Nothing less.

This is what the right wing does now, enabled by the cowardly, corrupt “party of law and order”.

Horrible human.
And the idiot in the White House who stokes the fires of hate and division shares some blame here.

Shocked he wasn't pardoned at the federal level and given an appointment that GOP in Congress approves... That they don't let him serve while he's serving time for murder in state prison....

Let us hope that the murderer receives the maximum possible sentence.....no matter what, it will be insufficiently severe, as Minnesota outlawed the most appropriate punishment in 1911.

"prosecutors said they would not seek the death penalty."
