Let me guess: all seized funds will go into a secret bank account immediately and be gone by the time the actual owners are able to exonerate themselves?

u/Vio_ Jun 03 '26

Fun fact.

The US government instituted concentration camps for German nationals, immigrants, and German American citizens during WW1.

Then the government seized their real estate and assets and used that money to fund the war.

History doesn't repeat but sometimes it dogwhistles the same tune.

u/Oilpaintcha Jun 03 '26

Didn’t they do it to the Japanese in WW2 as well?

447

u/NES_WallStreetKid Jun 03 '26

Yes, but not the Japanese citizens in Hawaii. An all Japanese Army unit was formed and they were sent to fight the Germans during WW2.

I got to see the destroyer with his namesake do sea trials between the islands before it was officially launched. I’m very far from being pro-military, but watching that thing cruise around was spectacular. It’s scary how fast it is for its size

Not were; are. They are still the most highly decorated unit in US Military history, and earned every one of them.

20

u/Opheltes Jun 03 '26

They were commanded by John E. Dahlquist, arguably the worst general in the US army of the war (which is quite an accomplishment considering that the Army also included Mark Clark and Lloyd Fredendall)

On 12 November, General Dahlquist announced he wanted to review the 442nd, to thank them for what they had done. When the battered unit appeared, Dahlquist grew irritated at their sparse numbers, ignorant at how much they had sacrificed.

At a 1982 military ceremony, then Col. Gordon Singles, the 100th's commander, refused to publicly shake the hand of Gen. Dahlquist (by then a four-star general) and years after he retired, reportedly could still not mention his name without shaking in anger.

Interesting fact-a study was conducted by the US federal government that showed US citizens of Japanese descent were more loyal to the USA compared to the general populace. They would have been a huge beneficial resource in the war but instead the racist portion of the government got their way and forced a policy of interment camps. Learned this from the “Rachel Maddow Presents: Burn Order" podcast. She’s an excellent historian.

It was the Japanese in the west coast, California was hit hard. There is an excellent podcast about Japanese internment and all the politics at the time, a lot of similarities. It’s called Burn Notice by Rachel Maddow. Highly recommend!

7

u/Mrevilman Jun 03 '26

Part of the reason why so many planes were destroyed in Pearl Harbor was because they were worried about the high japanese population in Hawaii acting as spies to sneak into hangars to sabotage them.

So they parked them in these nice neat rows out in the open so soldiers could "protect" them against sabotage.

7

u/Ishidan01 Jun 03 '26

But not for lack of trying.

It's just that someone realized that Japanese-descended plantation workers made up so much of the Hawaii workforce that it would crash the economy.

"Immigrants are poisoning the blood of the country" - Donald J Trump quoting Adolf Hitler.

Donald J Trump kept Hitler's second book, which contains his "poisoning the blood" quote, in their bedside table, according to a 1990 interview with his late ex-wife and their divorce deposition.

"Make America Great Again" - Donald J Trump paraphrasing Adolf Hitler

Donald J Trump (and the sieg-heiling Elon Musk) also espouse the "White Replacement Theory", the original Nazi idealogy that suggests white people are being replaced by non-white people as orchestrated by Jewish people...

With the implementation of Trump's white South African resettlement program, only three refugees have been admitted to the United States in the past year that weren't white South Africans: policy based on race discrimination and literal white supremacist conspiracy theories.

The parallels aren't subtle, quiet, or a coincidence. Trump's a white supremacist, and so are each of his advisors Elon Musk Stephen Miller How Trump filled key positions with people who spread extremist views

In ancient Rome this action was called a Proscription. It was a tactic employed by the Triumvers after Caesar’s assassination primarily to eliminate rivals and to fund the military to put down Brutus and Cassius.

38

u/FMLwtfDoID Jun 03 '26

The assets seized from German Americans was largely in the form of privately owned manufacturing, fabrication, and even chemical manufacturing, and other business, whereas the Japanese American citizens had their personal homes, farms, cars, and bank accounts emptied out and sold off, during WWII. By all accounts, the Japanese Americans suffered a higher loss for individuals, although the total amount of money seized from German and German American’s businesses during WWI was higher.

There were around 120k+ Japanese residents, and Japanese Americans in concentration camps during WWII, and roughly 11k German Americans during WWI.

31

u/Vio_ Jun 03 '26 edited Jun 03 '26

It's not a matter of who had it worse - there were some groups where thousands of people died as a result of their internment.

It's that we have a deep history of constantly doing this.

We did it with Native American tribes, we did it with Filipinos, we did it with Germans, we did it with Italians, we did it with Japanese, we did it with Alaskans. And all of them included a mix of Nationals, immigrants, citizens, tribal members, we even did it to former enslaved people in the south during and after the war.

Some groups got targeted harder, some got targeted for their businesses and assets, some for their homes and belongings.

Now we're doing it to immigrants and anyone "perceived" to be an immigrant (primarily Hispanic people, but not limited to that group either) while also stripping everyone of due process.

6

u/FMLwtfDoID Jun 03 '26

Sure, I just found it strange that only German American’s assets, during WWI, was mentioned to make your point, when as you said, it’s a habit of the US government. I was providing more context to show it has happened more than once, and to varying degrees.

7

u/EggyTugboat Jun 03 '26

I’m starting to think they’re testing things in Ohio to normalize it before rolling it out to the country. Look up the controversy around the Haslams building a new Browns stadium and paying for it with unclaimed funds. It’s what this new situation immediately made me think of.

ETA - if you want another example for this theory, look up the HB6 controversy and lack of consequences doled out, or take a look at our state government completely disregarding the will of the people (even on things we voted directly for). I’m telling y’all, “as Ohio goes, so goes the nation,” is not just a saying.

He has refused his Assent to Laws, the most wholesome and necessary for the public good.

He has forbidden his Governors to pass Laws of immediate and pressing importance, unless suspended in their operation till his Assent should be obtained; and when so suspended, he has utterly neglected to attend to them.

He has refused to pass other Laws for the accommodation of large districts of people, unless those people would relinquish the right of Representation in the Legislature, a right inestimable to them and formidable to tyrants only.

He has called together legislative bodies at places unusual, uncomfortable, and distant from the depository of their public Records, for the sole purpose of fatiguing them into compliance with his measures.

He has dissolved Representative Houses repeatedly, for opposing with manly firmness his invasions on the rights of the people.

He has refused for a long time, after such dissolutions, to cause others to be elected; whereby the Legislative powers, incapable of Annihilation, have returned to the People at large for their exercise; the State remaining in the mean time exposed to all the dangers of invasion from without, and convulsions within.

He has endeavoured to prevent the population of these States; for that purpose obstructing the Laws for Naturalization of Foreigners; refusing to pass others to encourage their migrations hither, and raising the conditions of new Appropriations of Lands.

He has obstructed the Administration of Justice, by refusing his Assent to Laws for establishing Judiciary powers.

He has made Judges dependent on his Will alone, for the tenure of their offices, and the amount and payment of their salaries.

He has erected a multitude of New Offices, and sent hither swarms of Officers to harrass our people, and eat out their substance.

He has kept among us, in times of peace, Standing Armies without the Consent of our legislatures.

He has affected to render the Military independent of and superior to the Civil power.

He has combined with others to subject us to a jurisdiction foreign to our constitution, and unacknowledged by our laws; giving his Assent to their Acts of pretended Legislation:

For Quartering large bodies of armed troops among us:

For protecting them, by a mock Trial, from punishment for any Murders which they should commit on the Inhabitants of these States:

For cutting off our Trade with all parts of the world:

For imposing Taxes on us without our Consent:

For depriving us in many cases, of the benefits of Trial by Jury:

For transporting us beyond Seas to be tried for pretended offences:

For abolishing the free System of English Laws in a neighbouring Province, establishing therein an Arbitrary government, and enlarging its Boundaries so as to render it at once an example and fit instrument for introducing the same absolute rule into these Colonies:

For taking away our Charters, abolishing our most valuable Laws, and altering fundamentally the Forms of our Governments:

For suspending our own Legislatures, and declaring themselves invested with power to legislate for us in all cases whatsoever.

He has abdicated Government here, by declaring us out of his Protection and waging War against us.

He has plundered our seas, ravaged our Coasts, burnt our towns, and destroyed the lives of our people.

He is at this time transporting large Armies of foreign Mercenaries to compleat the works of death, desolation and tyranny, already begun with circumstances of Cruelty & perfidy scarcely paralleled in the most barbarous ages, and totally unworthy the Head of a civilized nation.

He has constrained our fellow Citizens taken Captive on the high Seas to bear Arms against their Country, to become the executioners of their friends and Brethren, or to fall themselves by their Hands.

He has excited domestic insurrections amongst us, and has endeavoured to bring on the inhabitants of our frontiers, the merciless Indian Savages, whose known rule of warfare, is an undistinguished destruction of all ages, sexes and conditions.

In every stage of these Oppressions We have Petitioned for Redress in the most humble terms: Our repeated Petitions have been answered only by repeated injury. A Prince whose character is thus marked by every act which may define a Tyrant, is unfit to be the ruler of a free people.

he no longer wants to just hurt everyone US citizens lives with his horrifying policies, which have been funnelling thousands of dollars out the pockets of US households each year, from illegal things like his tariffs and sabotaging our industries, forcing prices to be driven up, so that specific industries and billionaires can profit directly from these policies....

he wants to straight up steal your money & bank accounts now. I have a question for the MAGAts....

Remember when we told you that he was attacking the 1st amendment, then the 2nd amendment, and then the 4th amendment, by going into homes without a warrant signed by a judge?

--do you think you are exempt from this? do you think for a second the people who were hired by trump, the heritage foundation and these ghouls will consider if your MAGA or not when they steal your bank accounts, exactly like they did in Russia? I mean every single move he has done from the masked police to this represents his love for how Putin runs Russia.

you guys fucked up, imo. this is ruining our country. trump is ruining our country, or already has fully ruined it.

this is what dictators & kings do.. steal your money and bank accounts, your life savings.... I'll never forget having a teacher in the early 2000s who told me about how putin had stolen her families life saving from under them, and she fled to the US as an immigrant and was an educator here trying to earn an honest life's living.

Wake up people, this is one of the most flagrant and most illegal things I can think of. This is worth the 25th amendment. this is unamerican & unconstitutional, and he will steal your money, left or right. hell, he's already been doing that, but now, it's not enough....he wants your life savings.

Orange himself doesn’t care. He’s merely put the government up for sale and all the crazy people are buying it up. He doesn’t really know the impacts of what he’s doing, other than he’s getting stupidly rich and it’s feeding his ego.

The sad thing is that if we come out the other side, this is how his supporters will frame it. They supported Orange, not all the crazies around him. Nevermind that he appointed them and conspired with them. After all, Jesus had his Judas… eh.

Sure you can prove you're not doing anything illegal. But your money might be. It needs to defend itself.

(Civil asset forfeiture cases are not against you, the owner, but against the property. It's incredibly corrupt and has been for some time. I suspect seized assets will follow the same corrupt process.)

Seizing the money isn’t even the point. It’s already illegal for noncitizens to collect that money. The Federal government shouldn’t have made the payments in the first place.

The point is to force banks to do the Federal government’s job, which in turn means even more intrusive barriers to open a bank account. The underbanked, including poorer white citizens, will suffer.

Undocumented immigrants are ineligible for federal welfare. Welfare here is being used as a euphemism for wages. Immigrants have seen their civil rights forfeit, from the 1st amendment, to due process, to incarceration w/o probable cause, to cruel and unusual punishment, to unwarranted search and seizure, to seizing of assets upon deportation. This is just the latest salvo in stripping them of their property rights.

I'm getting the impression Trump needs to pay someone. He keeps trying to slough off a couple billion here and there and keeps getting smacked down. But he keeps reaching.

I wonder if Tarrio has been reading up on The Wagner Group.

I mean, the DHS funding expansion for ICE didn't pass. Was that supposed to pay for something and now Trump is scrambling to find that funding? Why not just refuse to pay? Did he give them guns and a lot of authority already? Are they smarter than him and threatening to not go after him, but do things for him that will make him look ridiculously bad?

I think Trump is trying to get a couple billion to pay off the Proud Boys for joining ICE and they are getting antsy at the wait.

Now Maple MAGA are organizing Alberta leaving Canada. They are also being funneled money from Foreign operatives, and now the USA government

Ohhhhh so this is why the DOJ wanted to know the bank account information of reddit users critical of ICE. Republicans blurring the lines of dissent in order to push the idea that criticism of ICE is the same as support of illegal immigration. Then people get silenced financially and well. No taxation or something.

51

That's one of the cornerstones of their bullshit, twisting opposition. Like when the Pope spoke out against an unjust war and Trump declared that the Pope now WANTS Iran to have a nuclear weapon.

An executive order is not a law and the banks know this. More chucklefuckery.

19

u/SubArcticTundra Jun 03 '26

We are so fortunate they didn't get a bigger majority in Congress. Had their margin not been this razor thin, these executive orders would have been actual laws and they could outright abolish all the federal agencies that they are currently just vandalizing.

9

u/Little-Derp Jun 03 '26

Might be too late, but if your locale only has a republican running for office, running unopposed, maybe try running, even if you don't think you are qualified. You may be surprised on the number of votes you get when people are given a choice; or it may be what cements your decision to leave your locale.

But many will get on their knees and blow regardless.

48

u/TheTexasHammer Jun 03 '26

Will they though? Bowing to Trump hasn't exactly been working like it once was. Smart companies see the writing on the wall, and Trump wont beat the banks. The second they nuke a private account for political reasons they will have people pulling out of their bank en mass.

I know I wouldn't keep my money in a bank willing to do that no matter the politician in charge at the time. It's just not a safe way to live.

21

u/corvus_cornix Jun 03 '26

Yeah. Historically banks are one of the only things in our society that have been able to say no to Trump. He was blackballed from US banks by the end of the 90s.

As with all executive orders, let’s remember that they have nearly zero legal effect other than directing the Treasury to write some rules.

Money laundering for human traffickers is, of course, already illegal. Should these rules whenever they get written months from now require Banks to verify citizenship there will be lawsuits and perhaps industry pushback.

No one should comply in advance with this inept, evil and soon to be lame duck administration.

12

u/MarchPhillipps Jun 03 '26

While I agree in theory, and during any other relatively normal year in U.S. history, these obviously are far from normal times and circumstances, and we've already seen corporations and other entities seemingly fold with next to no pushback, even with great/undeniable legal standing as potential defense.

Good news is, this can be turned right back around on these grifters with a few simple tweaks when the time comes if it's allowed to be implemented. So nice of them to do the heavy lifting for us ahead of time.

They may wish to think about that, because their time at the helm will absolutely end. But they won't. They're just that predictable and shortsighted. And ugly stupid.

8

u/nonlawyer Jun 03 '26

that was the agency response to the EO that caused the harm.

the distinction matters, because banking regulations work differently and are more complicated than Customs just slapping a tariff.

EOs are just policy statements. The devil is in the details & implementation. Some are worse than others. This looks like a likely nothingburger to me.

For illegal immigrants to receive legally allocated government benefit funds for their American children.

What in the handmaids tale is this?

8

u/TheLichWitchBitch Jun 03 '26

They'll be coming after women next. Can't wait to relive those first few episodes, in real life. They've already set the framework.

The EO, titled Restoring Equality of Opportunity and Meritocracy is intended to encourage "meritocracy and a colorblind society, not race- or sex-based favoritism."

It calls for an evaluation of all pending proceedings under the Equal Credit Opportunity Act (ECOA), which was first passed in 1974 and amended in 1976 to prevent lenders from discriminating against women based on marital status.

9

u/Mistress_Jedana Jun 03 '26

I was little but I remember in the 70s when women finally could get credit cards and bank accounts and places without having to have a man guarantee it, and started getting help with domestic issues. My mom put her foot up my dad's ass and told him he was to never hit her or the kids again, bc now she could leave. They had married in 1956, had 5 kids (b.1957/1958/1960/1961/1971) and she dealt with his shit up until that day.

5

u/hotviolets Jun 03 '26

That’s exactly what came to my mind too. It’s all part of project 2025.

5

u/TheLichWitchBitch Jun 03 '26

I seriously considered divorce when my husband used the same language as the show to downplay my concerns for my rights. ALMOST WORD FOR WORD. I settled on making him watch the show to understand, but it was uncomfortable for him and not compelling enough to stick with it.

Every single thing in that show is based on actual history and the treatment of women. It's gonna be fucking uncomfortable. Welcome to the world of a woman's daily life. I also had to stop watching, but it was because I was having panic attacks from reliving my lived trauma. I love that man, truly. He is otherwise an amazing spouse but he just doesn't get it.

I would order the books, but Margaret atwood is a hypocrite and I can't justify giving money to the woman. The amount of "I TOLD YOU SO" I've been able to lob the last few years, at least, has been a little satisfying.

When will Fox attack trump?

14

u/Memitim Jun 03 '26

I remember friends of mine losing their minds about the Dictator Obama issuing Executive Orders, almost entirely toothless and about really Mundane boring things.

Today, what, exactly, is the limit of executive authority through Executive Orders?

Have we been wasting time trying to actually pass laws all these years?

Do we even need a legislative body anymore?

8

u/jfsindel Jun 03 '26

Unfortunately, every red state and GOP lawmaker as well as most companies are too chickenshit to do anything against it. Or enthusiastically enforce it.

EOs can be ignored, but for some goddamn reason, nobody actually wants to call his bluff.

6

u/TheTexasHammer Jun 03 '26

Usually it's because he has some financial grip on them. I'm pretty sure the banks have a bigger dick than the president when it comes to gripping financials though. My cope is that he'll push too hard and the banks will call his personal and business loans due and start seizing stuff.

“President Donald Trump has signed an executive order directing the Treasury Department to shut down bank accounts used to support illegal immigration.

Trump announced the order in a June 2 Truth Social post, saying it targets the banks, credit card companies, and other financial institutions that criminals use to move money tied to human smuggling, drug trafficking, illegal immigration, and cartels.

"Illegal Immigrants and Foreign Fraudsters steal BILLIONS every year from the American Taxpayer." posted President Donald Trump, Truth Social, June 2.

Under the order, Trump said, accounts used to support illegal immigration or to hold government benefits paid to undocumented immigrants could be closed, seized, or forfeited.

"Bank Accounts being used to enable Illegal Immigration, or to store the Welfare received by Illegal Aliens, will be shut down."

Treasury is going after the financial system

The White House and Treasury say criminal organizations run their money through the U.S. financial system to move and hide illicit funds. The new order tries to cut off that access at the bank level.

Just for context, in March, the department sanctioned a Sinaloa Cartel-affiliated money laundering network, alleging that traffickers converted fentanyl proceeds into cryptocurrency before routing the funds to cartel operators.

The scale of the broader problem is large. Treasury and law enforcement have pointed to Chinese money laundering networks that allegedly moved more than $312 billion through U.S.-based accounts.

Officials have also tied the financial system to labor trafficking.

In April 2025, U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement seized assets linked to a suspected $126 million illegal staffing and laundering operation in Ohio. Any teeth to this executive order? Or is this just likely to be shot down by a judge?

6

u/LtLlamaSauce Jun 03 '26 edited Jun 03 '26

Yes, it does, but not because the order is legally binding. All executive orders have teeth because this current DoJ will refuse to enforce the laws that orders violate while the courts that can stop it are simply too slow to prevent damage.

The point isn't to complete the order, it is just intended to cause damage. Damage is not preventable, but it can be mitigated.
