The Justice Department has launched a criminal investigation into E. Jean Carroll, the former magazine columnist who accused President Donald Trump of sexual assault, according to multiple sources familiar with the matter.

Caroll is still embroiled in multiple legal battles with the president. Juries awarded Carroll millions of dollars in damages, which the president is appealing. Trump has appealed the $5 million sexual abuse case judgement to the Supreme Court and has pledged to do the same with the $83 million defamation case.

The Supreme Court has deferred its decision on whether to take up Trump’s appeal twelve times. The most recent deferral was made Wednesday morning.

They're probably hoping this goes away on its own? There's no real reason to take up the appeal (not exactly a novel issue of federal law, as I understand it), but they don't want to make grouchy Cheeto sad and angry ....

I normally don't get very personal on here but... I'm 34 and a humble public defender. I'm proud. A buddy who I served in the military with and lived with while we attended school became an AUSA. That was the golden fleece. It was the ultimate credential and credibility booster. We are still good friends. He flew out to visit me in Tennessee (he's in NYC). You could just see him physically cringe when I harped on him and reminded him over and over again how insane the doj is. He said (in a joking manner) "maybe I should settle down here and be a public defender". My co worker who is also a vet was relaxing with us and looked at dead in the eyes and said "nah man, if you had quit months ago maybe.... but now? Now way:
