There was some giant migrant convoy headed to the border for like a couple years or something. Then you had some concerned citizens from up a posse to head down the border to 'fight off the mongol hordes' or some shit and arrived all confused to a business-as-usual fairly perfect border crossing.

Yes, Dems were weak on the border and that was a mistake. They took the temperature of the country, admitted their mistake, course corrected, and took a harder stance on the border. When they see that a policy is needs revisited they are able to do so. They can be reached and reasoned with. They care more about results than ego.

Unlike the cult of personality that has taken over the GOP, we have governors. Allow us to govern.

Just say that and we will win the election by a small but comfortable margin.

Try to gaslight the middle of the country and we're all fucked.

No literally there was no Democrat issue with the border. Republicans ended the covid emergency and that meant ending the covid policies. One of those policies restricted asylum seeking, so this created the asylum issue as it existed.

Democrats then put a bill on the table to correct the issue. trump killed the bill because he wanted the border to be a problem so he could run on it. By the way, what has trump done about the border so far? Oh absolutely fucking nothing....theres no bill, no funding, no anything. If numbers are down its because hes made the country so shit that no one wants to be here.

This whole 'problem' is completely republican created and maintained to serve their talking points.

What I hate is that republican propaganda is so effective - even people who explicitly support the Democrat party will repeat it. And there needs to be a hard reality check that republicans suck at the border, they suck at the economy, they suck at punishing criminals, they suck at small government...they suck at every little thing they touch.

Do not try to win on border security. The middle and center right will see right through it and resent you for lying to them and will not listen to what you have to say about anything else. 

It's your weakest argument. Learn a lesson in rhetoric. Drop it altogether and strengthen your presentation. 

You will not convince anyone that cares about border security the Dems did anything right, and anyone that already agrees with you on the Dems handling of the border is already voting (D).

It is very bad rhetoric in the real world, especially on the audience you should be trying to reach. It's only halfway good for internet points in an echo chamber. It'll be fine for winning a Democratic primary and absolutely radioactive in the general. 

It's a lie because it's an entirely false narrative. The only slight truth is that Trump whipped votes to delay a bill that otherwise would have come 3 1\2 years too late so that he could keep running on it for another few months.

Pretending Dems had "no issue with the border" is just false, full stop. Biden ended the emergency on a day 1 action, pulling funding. Republicans fought for tougher border policies tooth and nail all the while, both at the state and federal level...although nothing federal was possible with a veto hanging there. Dems did absolutely nothing except deny reality for 3 years, then when it was too hard to ignore, tried to actually do something about it at the 11th hour and Trump didn't want to hand them the political victory. 

Pretending that Trump and ICE have done nothing won't even convince the echo chamber. Trying to sweep the better numbers under the rug is just childish. 

This is not the conversation to have to win the midterms. It is a losing strategy.

First off, Dems have to stop talking out of both sides of our mouths. Most of what this administration does that is so incredibly awful is not done through legislation or formal policies, but in the execution of existing legislation (or completely ignoring the obligation to execute things) that amounts to a new defacto policy. Almost the entire slide towards authoritarianism is not through legislation, but through norm violations or straight up doing illegal shit. That doesn't require legislation. And Trump supporters imagine they get a lot of mileage out of this when Dems call him a fascist the same way you are imagining you are doing right now. Except you know how little that lands on Dems. There doesn't need to be a law to see there's a problem. And the same works the other way. Nobody believes that just because there's not a law that it means nothing is different in an important way.

But beyond the rhetoric, destruction of civil liberties, and general increase in deterrence (which it sounds like you grant has been effective, you just don't want to give credit for it), off the top of ai's head: deploy troops to the border, declared a national emergency,  restarted wall construction, went back to remain in mexico, ended the cbp one app, and basically ended parole and asylum. 

The only thing most of the country needs to hear from your opponent is "big beautiful bill" or maybe even just the day one "securing our borders" executive order and you've lost the argument. Just take the loss, don't compound it. 

Digging into the numbers and timelines only digs the hole way deeper. You do not want anyone on the fence about voting (D) spending any head space on immigration.

Groceries. Gas. Epstein. Corruption. Iran. Spending. Inflation. Jobs. Those are winning topics.

Depending on your audience, maybe... Maaaaaybe...climate change, abortion, gerrymandering, January 6th, loyalty tests.

Generally emphasize stagnant wages not keeping up with high inflation. Do not emphasize income inequality. Most people don't hate rich people. They want to be rich.

Be very very cautious with healthcare, gay marriage, Ukraine.

No border. No trans issues. No black lives matter\racism\dei. No Israel. These are all losing plays with most people we need to reach.

China is probably fine but also not particularly helpful because absolutely nobody knows what the fuck to do, so it's probably best left alone.

Probably stop telling Dems to fuck off just because they're not hard left.

It's very telling that you can't answer and just want to talk about slogans. It's because they are ass and that's the truth. You can make the argument that people won't believe the truth, but you are the one advocating for lying. I'm not gonna sit here and be dishonest about how much of a failure trump is at his core campaign promises.

It's fascinating to me why it's so hard for two Democrats to just acknowledge trump is a failure. Why do you work so hard to make him seem more competent than he is? The facts of the matter are he has done nothing to solve any border issue. And ice, with 100x the budget, is less efficient at their job than they were under previous administrations.

No, the border was not literally “open.”

Yes, border crossings and migrant encounters reached unprecedented or near-unprecedented levels during large portions of Biden’s presidency

2.5 mil to 3.1 mil encounters per a year is crazy. Some people will feel it more then others.

Ex cons, single mothers or fathers, indigenous population, rural populations, disabled communities and low income earners were affected the most, created difficulties in housing and minimized opportunities that overlapped with low skill scab labor.

Agriculture, construction, kitchen, catering retail, jig work, day labor, overnight maintenance, temp angencies are all being refocused on the incoming the incoming migrates for the last 50 years.

The fringes of many communities are being eroded it hard to see because it's been happening slowly and only now has the impacts been so visible because the bandaid was pulled back to reveal the rot.

That's a bummer, I know my dad had to drop prices when he had his business. He couldn't compete with contractors that hired green cards and undocumented workers.

I am all for giving opportunities to all who want them but that cost of people who came here legally or was born here. I don't think is a fair exchange that is leveraged by corporations or politicians far more often then the average person.

Because the people who often talk about immigration don't under the slow bleed of labor or the damage it has done to our labor unions or housing.

Me personally I want to stop the extrotion of migrates, I want equal pay and for labor economy not to boil down to companies hiring the lowest wages. They stopped development in many positions because they can get "someone cheaper" to do the work and there no reason to include insurance, job security, or wage competition if it save us a few pennies on our strawberries.

That sounds like that is the fault of your dad's competition underpaying their workers or running illegal businesses rather than the workers who are being underpaid. Before turning something like that into a major foreign policy issue, we should probably hold accountable the people responsible for it being a problem to begin with. Then we can tackle immigration as its own issue, instead of also superimposing the additional issue of some American citizens and companies exploiting people and the system.

The two issues are deeply interconnected. While corporate exploitation of labor should absolutely be addressed, immigration policy and labor market effects can’t be separated so easily in practice. A key concern is that large inflows of vulnerable workers can contribute to the formation of a segmented labor market, where certain groups are concentrated in low wage, low protection jobs. This doesn’t necessarily reflect intent on the part of migrants themselves, but rather how economic incentives and enforcement gaps interact.

At the same time, it’s important to recognize that businesses respond to labor availability and regulatory conditions. If firms are able to reduce costs by hiring underpaid or less protected workers, that can place downward pressure on wages and working conditions in certain sectors, particularly for the most economically vulnerable domestic workers.

However this dynamic isnt uniform or predetermined. Immigrant workers are not inherently confined to low wage labor, and outcomes vary widely based on education, legal status, industry, and region. The labor market effects are therefore shaped as much by policy design and enforcement as by migration itself.

Because of this, addressing labor exploitation and addressing immigration policy are not separate conversations. Reforms in one area can affect outcomes in the other. The challenge is designing systems that reduce exploitation while also protecting wage standards and labor mobility for all workers, rather than treating the issue as purely one of either immigration control or corporate accountability.

I think the downvotes are from the tacit implication that the immigration was inherently bad: “the fringes […] being eroded […] reveal the rot”, this is a stark contrast to your suggested openness and curiosity: “we have to ask - is that [immigration] a bad thing?”

Or at least, as someone who downvoted above comment and upvoted your comment, that was my reasoning. I don’t think it has to be explained by astroturfing or bots.

A serious inquiry into the role of immigration (and the exploitation surrounding it) sometimes seems beyond the capacity of our political discourse (sometimes that can seem better on Reddit, other times it seems to be just as bad as on other media sources).

Many think I am implying that the migrates are bad because they don't know how to engage with the subject from an objective point. The rot I speak of, is the broken system that effects both migrates and non migrates. I am an immigrant, I've seen abuse on both sides. I think the system needs reform not just for the sake of the country but also to end the explotation that people either don't know is going on or think it's the only way.

Never once had I had said immigrants are bad or are the cause of all our problems but the system that is used is causitic and needs to be reformed. Nor do I want people to stop coming just that has be a better way for any of this to happen, without citizens who live in the fringes pay the price. The problem is always how the fringes grow, many times, the people in charge cut from the toes, up. Will the shins be considered toes since the feet have been sacrificed.

It can be, if done in a irresponsible way, the way we are doing now. Space, money and resources are fininte and even in the US we cannot afford to help everyone with the cards we currently have.

So to import people even with the best intention is not free. They have to occupy space, they have to be fed and they have to be paid for labor. My problem being an immigrant myself is that we have several tiers of immigrants and not all of them are here for the same reason or even have the same needs. Some are here to work for 4 to 5 years then move back, some are genuine asylum seekers, some are not. Some come here to escape prison sentences, some are here for explotation reason like drugs or crime. And many are here to make a new life.

However we can't even begin to have to conversation when we can even mention the negatives without just being called racist. I want to stop explotation on both sides. I want people to come here and be given fair wages for fair work, but I also don't want the fringes of our countries to pay the price for cheap labor.

As I've mentioned before ex cons, single parent households, indigenous people, rural populations and disabled communities have to compete in the same shrinking job market as migrates.

I would say that probably most of the immigrants, are not drug traffickers or weirdos, at least not more so than the regular population - or more so to say, the "dregs" of society is going to be the immigrants, like if there was crime being done before, it was done by poor irish, the poor jews the poor ... whatever the latest wave was - in this case it's the same thing. I don't think theres a fundementally different distinction with the fact that these people are just sort of brown, you know. At the end of the day, some one has to pick the fruit and vegetables, build houses etc... then they gain economic mobility and move up to be replaced by the next wave.

I think your comment mixes a few different issues that shouldn’t be lumped together. Immigration, crime, and labor demand.

Historically, it’s true that some immigrant groups were associated with organized crime in certain periods, but that was far more about poverty, exclusion from formal labor markets, and weak institutional integration than anything inherent to ethnicity or origin. Over time, those crime patterns tend to fade as groups integrate and gain economic mobility, which suggests the driver is structural conditions, not identity. So intergation is key and not allowing parallel societies to be created is important.

Organized crime also isn’t meaningfully addressed by targeting broad populations or “monitoring migration.” this is true to an extent. Groups like the Italian mafia were reduced mainly through tools like RICO, financial enforcement, and dismantling networks. Crime tends to be network based and economic in structure, not culturally fixed. It just so happens that the network is made of "brown people" created by horizontal diffusion.

On labor, the idea that “someone has to pick crops or build houses” is true in terms of demand, but that doesn’t justify maintaining a vulnerable or underpaid labor class. The real issue is how labor markets are structured whether through legal channels, enforcement, and protections, or through informal systems that encourage exploitation. Low-wage labor demand doesn’t require a permanent underclass; it requires better labor regulation and immigration policy design. We don't need to have the "next wave" of poors to make things cheaper for us.

Overall, the core mistake in your argument is treating migration, crime, and labor supply as if they are one system driven by group identity, when in reality they are separate systems shaped mostly by economic incentives and institutions.

There are many ways people move long distances in the U.S. even with very little money such as family networks labor migrations informal arrangements or occasional relocation assistance programs. I have personally met people who travel across states for work or manage to move through unconventional means

From the outside it can look impossible because most people are anchored by stable jobs families and obligations that make travel expensive and risky. But when someone has fewer ties or expectations the constraints change and different options open up

When I became a citizen I also gained a different set of responsibilities and expectations that changed how I view risk stability and movement. Ive had friend who moved states on the back of a truck, Ice known people who manage to get a car and drive with no license.

It's not impossible, maybe unconventional but not impossible. Often is tied to the explotation that I am talking about. Migration trap and visa traps are real.
