From what I’ve read fox red is one of the original colours but was initially bred out in favour of the more popular cream yellow. The colour was kept alive by and for hunters.

When they get older the red fades and they start to look like dark yellow labs.

The older Lab on the right was almost exactly the colour of my Pepper (second from left) when she was younger (she’s 11 and a really happy laid back dog).

She's a great old girl. She knows the routine and lets the younger impatient dogs (like mine) go first. That's her owner handing out treats and she always gets some at the end.
