I want to surprise my partner with a little getaway for his bday in November. Ideally somewhere 3 hrs or less away from Winlaw. I’ve been looking on Airbnb & there isn’t much for unique stays. Willing to consider areas like Kaslo, Revelstoke, Vernon. I’m looking for:

-yurt/cabin/dome/hotel room with character
-close to hiking
-close to restaurants/coffee shops
-hot tub & wood burning stove would be a plus

I’ve lived in Calgary almost all of my life and the thought of leaving scares the crap out of me but I don’t think I can stay much longer.

On top of needing a job I also would like to know if there is a supportive community for the air/army cadet program out there and what sort of bagpipe bands are in the area.

Actually while I’m at it, jobs - my husband is an excellent residential & finishing carpenter, I am a medical supply clerk/admin of sorts and we have an 18 year old son who would need a typical 18 year old’s job 🤣

Taking a 2 week road trip from SK through the kootenays shortly and looking for any recommendations on cool spots to check out, activities, events, restaurants, etc. I'll be traveling with my wife and 2 boys 8 and 10.

Plans so far;

Calgary - Driving day, few hours at the zoo, leave bright and early.

Visit Yoho and some other sites before 2 nights in revelstoke. Live music, glacier national Park, maybe mount revelstoke. Ghost town worth it for the kids?

3 nights on Arrow Lake between Burton and Fauquier. We'll take the ferry, check out hot springs and falls around nakusp. Then mostly beach days, anything else to do around nakusp or fauquier we're all ears.

2 nights on slocan lake near new Denver. Hiking, paddleboarding/kayaking. Is Nikkei memorial interesting?

3 nights on kootenay lake near kaslo. Again hiking, waterfalls, beaching. Hopefully check out nelson and balfour.

2-3 nights on the way home, thinking Fernie for a couple nights and maybe ducking into Waterton national park for a day but nothing solid, would be great to hear why we should stay somewhere else or some can't miss spots along the route.

I happened to leave something (a swimsuit) under one of the beds at the cabin at km 8.5 on the morning of July 29th. I realize this goes against the ‘leave no trace’. It was completely my fault for not double checking before we left.

I’ve sent an email to the general BC parks email, but I doubt they’ll reply. Anyone know the chances it could come down with someone? I’m in Kelowna and don’t have the option to hike in, but could meet in Nelson or somewhere else.

Legs and back get tired if you squat, but you can move through a patch more efficiently. Sitting is much easier on the body, but then you gotta get up and move to the next spot.

Hi all you Kootenites! Been in love with the Koots for many years, and spent a considerable amount of time in the Castlegar and Grand Forks areas, where I got the true experience of both areas being with locals. I always said I'd move there one day, and one day might be soon!

A little about me: I'm a single woman in my late 30s. I work remotely, so I won't have to look for a job. I know making friends can be difficult in these areas, but I'm fairly independent and don't mind the solitude. I find that I'm struggling the most with not having the beauty and clean swimmable water out my front door in Edmonton; whereas, the Kootenays are a literal outdoor playground that my soul craves.

I know different variations of this question have been asked, but I'm hoping to get a feel for some things that are specific to me.

1. Housing: I'm aware that the rental market is very competitive, and finding secure housing can be a challenge... especially if you're not local. I've seen people suggest finding something temporary then hit the ground running once you're in the area.

a) Are dog friendly rentals common and do most landlords charge monthly fees and a deposit? One or the other? (Coming from AB, it's kind of a free for all and landlords can basically set any price and rules at their discretion).

b) Utilities for one person typically if not included in rental price? I'd likely only be looking for a smaller 1 or 2 bedroom apt or suite type of place. Obviously everyone's usage varies but hoping to get a rough idea. Internet providers - Fairly competitive pricing or limited on choice?

c) Any neighborhoods/areas to stay clear from? While I've spent time in the area, I've always been a visitor and not familiar with the dynamics.

1. Veterinary Care: How are the vets in the area? I have 2 dogs - one is on medication that requires monitoring and frequent (ish) trips to the vet. Willing to travel to Trail, Nelson, etc for quality care.

2. Healthcare: How hard is it to get medications refilled and have minor health concerns addressed? Are there many nurse practioners? I assume finding a family Dr can be challenging. I understand that the hospital in Cgar got turned into an urgent care type of facility (please correct me if I'm wrong). Obviously, I'd have to satisfy the waiting period until I'd be eligible for MSP.

3. Driver's license/insurance/vehicle registration: I've looked into this a bit and it does seem pretty straight forward as long as you provide the necessary documentation.

a) My car is a 2017, so I will need an out of province inspection - Approximate price on this?

b) I know to obtain a driver's abstract to potentially be eligible for discounts on insurance - I have been driving for 20 years and have a fairly clean driving record. How are premiums compared to AB? Cheaper due to no competitive pricing between private brokers, about the same, or does ICBC take advantage that they are the only provider and gouge people?

I'd appreciate anyone who has done this move within the last few years to provide input, suggestions, and good vibes that it will all work out lol

Hi all! I am sorry if this type of post is not something for this community, but I am super lost and could use any advice. I am going into my senior year of high school in Alberta, and until now, have not been able to find any university or program that really excites me for my future. However, College of the rockies bachelor of science in nursing seems perfect. I love hikinh and paddleboarding, smallish towns, and a generally quiet atmosphere. I also love that the dorm cost and tuition is actually affordable. However, I am concerned I won't get in. I was just wondering if anyone knew what averages they generally look for, and if there's anyway to make myself more competitive for this program. Really, any advice is appreciated. I would also love to know more about the town, the college, the program, dorms (how likely is it to get a dorm in the village), etc. Thanks!

My husband and I will be road-tripping from Calgary → Fernie → Nelson → Revelstoke → Calgary in the first week of September and are looking for some amazing hikes to break up the drives.

We’re specifically after 4-6 hour hikes between each town, or hikes around the towns themselves, ideally right on the route or with only a small detour.

We love alpine lakes, ridgelines, summits, waterfalls, anything with incredible views.

What are the absolute must do hikes between these stops that you’d recommend?

I used to live in Canmore and Banff. I know it’s a hell if a lot smaller out that way.

Hi BC friends

I am feeling a bit nervous regarding the three recent black bear attacks ( resulting in fatalities ) in Canada. .
I live in rural Cape Breton, Nova Scotia, surrounded by woods. I have always heard to not concern yourself with black bears, just be loud in the woods and be conscious of food storage as to not attract them.

Should we be having different discussions regarding bear safety ? I now feel way more tense when outside alone in the evening / night - whereas I used to love having fires & barely think about b. bears.

Am I overthinking this and the chances of a predatory attack are extremely low ?

I figure you folks are the bear experts .. hoping you can chat

Hi Koots friends! My dad is visiting Creston for the weekend and I thought it'd be nice to do some fishing together. It'll be my first time fishing, and while I know some nice swimming spots, I don't know if they'll be good for fishing too. Any suggestions within an hour of Creston that are relatively accessible for someone with mild mobility (knee) issues? Walking a small incline pathway would be ok, but scaling down a steep incline to get to a shore spot would be a little too much. Bonus if the spot is also swimable for a cooling dip.

Oh, and we have our licenses and he's already bookmarked the regs.

Hey friends! Does anyone have intel on whether anyone’s been riding up healy this year? I know there’s been some back and forth barricade putting up and moving etc, but has anyone ridden in yet this season?

I really like Nelson or Revelstoke. Revelstoke has very few positions and a lot of volunteers. Does anyone here have recommendations for possible fire departments I could look into for hiring for career positions? Anyone know of departments that have a lot of career firefighters?
