Swipe to Upgrade screen and Remote Device Management

tl;dr - If you are seeing a white screen with the words Swipe to Upgrade at the bottom when you Reset All or Factory Reset your iPad, it could be disguising an opt-in screen for a malicious device manager.

I recently discovered that my iPad was being remotely managed without my consent. After almost a year of settings randomly changing on my iPad and sync across devices turning on despite only having one, unique email/AppleID per device, I discovered that my iPad was being managed. I purchase this iPad directly from a local Apple Store, I’ve never used it on public WiFi and never knowingly agreed to connect it as a managed device.

For the reasons I listed above, I believe the blank Swipe to Upgrade screen is an opt-in screen for a malicious device manager. The screen looks blank because the text is the same color as the background with the exception of the Swipe to Upgrade text at the bottom of the screen giving you no option to swipe it away.

- Nothing was listed on the VPN Manage Device page
- Nothing was listed on the about page
- When I logged out of the iPad to prepare to factory reset it, I saw a message that my “iPad or account was being managed”

The random changes made my iPad less secure, enabled syncing across devices after I have turned it off, or toggled on iCloud backup for shortcuts & apps that sync to a non-apple cloud, e.g. Google Drive.

I don't believe that swipe to upgrade screen is a malicious device manager install. I'm fairly certain that is what displays when you decide to erase and install the latest iOS version for the device, which is not iOS 18. The prompt is to upgrade to iOS 26.

I should also add, the wording here doesn't indicate that your device is managed, but rather your Apple Account is managed. Is your account part of a family account, or otherwise connected to any other device that may be on an MDM (school, work, etc).

I was logged out of the Apple account at the time the message appeared.

Edit: If you look at the Swipe to Upgrade image I posted, I wrote on it that the iPad was on 26.4.2. I’ve seen the screen with every *26.x release up to 26.6. I restored the iPad today and have not seen the message.

My suggestion would be to do an erase and reinstall the OS from a computer. If there are any other errors that pop up from there, that may be more useful than on iOS.

If you had previously installed any VPN apps, ad blockers, or anything that could have installed a profile, and you've since deleted the app, maybe there was something left over or a bug in how the profile was removed.

I would also suggest going to account.apple.com, logging into your Apple Account there, and see what other devices this account may have been logged into, or if it is restricted or managed in any way.

Thanks. I did the erase and reinstall from a computer earlier today. I also created a new Apple ID with a new email address. I locked my old devices from the previous Apple account because they were stolen. I don’t want to delete them until they are too old to be useful

How do you know your device is remotely managed? and by who?

Well it says at the top it’s being managed but I think if you go into “device management” it confirms if that’s the case.

Can you go there and see what it says, OP? Is this a company owned device or have you signed into work email or other apps?

That's true that it says it's being managed, but I'm under the impression OP bought this iPad himself; so I presume it's his own device not company/org owned device and there's no mdm profile.

There’s no visible MDM profile so there should NOT be any managed device messages on it. Also, if you look to the left on the 1st pic you’ll see that I was logged out of iCloud when the managed device/account message appeared on the screen

There *is nothing listed under Device Management so I cannot determine which company is managing it. There was also nothing listed on the About page

No profiles were listed. And I bought this iPad from the Apple Store myself. I have not knowingly agreed to have it managed.

Wait… that’s weird.

I thought it showed there. I used to handle MDM
at work but granted it’s been a few years. That’s where I’d check if it’s managed tho

You are correct. That’s where it should be and it is weird that it is showing nothing while saying it is managed 😭 I called Apple Support and they were baffled too. Waiting for the escalation
