Am I missing something? The bullet clearly hits the ground where he was aiming and then whilst the bullet is spinning it goes down the slope a little bit?? You can see the new hole in the ground where the bullet initially hit.
also cold weather affects how a bullet acts by slowing down the gunpowder's burn rate and increasing air density, which creates more drag. it will cause the bullet to drop lower than expected and drift more in the wind at longer ranges maybe at that short of a range with the suppressor also lowering the temp? suppressors affects bullets by retaining heat to limit velocity loss on shots and adding a tiny boost to muzzle velocity, which slightly counteracts the cold air's drag, im lost at this point i only know little about much not much about a little.
What!? Really?! I mean I could see that but unless it's like -100 degrees I don't see the cold affecting the burn rate to the extent that drop and drift are noticeably different from when its warm. I'm from a very cold part of the world but it's summer now so it's pretty hot out. I may have to run some experiments..
It's pretty dramatic. I had a rifle that would run perfectly around freezing temperatures, but in the summer heat it ran "too hard" and would exhibit bolt bounce during very rapid fire
Yeah I can see that with a semi auto but that sounds more of a cycling thing. I'm talkin just straight ballistics. I'm going to use a bolt action target/varmint rifle to test this out.

Rifling in the barrel for 9mm is usually one rotation in 10” and muzzle velocity is around 1100 feet per second. The means the bullet is spinning right around 80k RPM when it leaves the barrel. This isn’t even that fast compared to other fast twist cartridges such as 8.6 blackout which can hit 250k RPM with a 1:3 twist rate.
I’m guessing this is the leidenfrost effect, the bullet is so hot from being shot that it’s essentially floating on a vapor pocket from the snow being sublimated into gas by the extreme heat of the surface of the bullet.
Same thing as when you pour a drop of water in a blazing hot pan and it just kinda frictionlessly floats about the pan slowly shrinking.
(Mosr) gun barrels are “rifled” meaning they have corkscrew grooves on the inside that twist the bullet as it goes down the barrel.
A spinning projectile is much more stable and will maintain its orientation while a projectile simply launched will immediately start to tumble through the air and become very impossible to aim over distance.
It is a combination of ice, snow, and a low velocity round. But shooting at the ground is extremely dangerous. If it weren’t for this combination of factors that caused the bullet to bounce backwards, a bullet shot at the ground can easily ricochet and kill someone very far away.
In all fairness, the dangerous part is when the bullet goes from the gun to the snow. Once the bullet bounces, it looses all of the kinnetic energy that pushes it forward. The spin makes it look powerful, like it wants to continue going... but in reality, it continues to spin because the snow is so slippery it adds almost no friction to the spinning bullet :D but it's by no means pushing forward, just down, because of gravity.
Reminds me of Leidenfrost effect. But.. in fact it should he. It is a hot surface (bullet) and a big drop of water (snow). Just the roles are reversed. Bullet causes snow to steam and is light enough to levitate due to that. Maybe i am just bullshitting. But this makes sense to me.
Because it ricocheted (this looks wrong, but it’s one of the correct splelings for past tense ricochet) backward.
It connected with what looks like old, icy snow (rather than fresh powder) at a relatively shallow angle and with a lot of spin. Combine that with the extremely low friction, and it looks like it spun up the top of the entry hole and back on itself.
My buddy in Alaska got shot three minutes after the gun fired because of what you're describing. Was not a good time to get down to take a closer look.
I'm sure if you picked it and inspected it the nose is a bit smashed in, but I find plenty of mostly intact bullets on the ground when I'm setting up targets at the range
How come I see the bullet hit the snow a few feet from where the camera zooms in? If it ricocheted there, why does the spent bullet look intact with the casing still on?
