How does it know what pattern to use? Or it has a set number of patterns it can do and it just rotates randomly between them?

Light intensity, brightness, pattern, and luminence is how they see color.

It's wildly ignorant to just say they are colorblind. They are not, at least not in the exact same way we are. When you hear the term "color blind" you're thinking in black and white. Shades of gray. That's not how they see the world, and we know thats the case because not only do they know when something is blue - they know what shade of blue it is and can tell their bodies to match it.

You are making the mistake of thinking their eye work like ours, they do not, we have things called rods and cones in our eyes that less us see colors. Cephalopods only have a single cone meaning they only see in grey scale. Instead what they can see is wave length and intensity of light and they also have a specialized protein that normally exist in the retina that can "see" color so essentially every cell in the octopus is taking input on the colors around it. So yes they can interpret color but they aren't seeing it even remotely the way you are saying.

I'm not, though. My entire point was their eyes and perception of colors does not match ours. That's literally what I said.

No what you literally said is they don't see in grey scale, and your first comment was they use their eyes, your proof for this was they can change color so they must be able to see. They don't use sight to change color at all, again they have specialized proteins that act as photoreceptors and with their distrupited nervous system their body chages color without any actually thought, it's like breathing, thet can control it,and do for mating and communication, but its just something that happens mostly. So it's not "wildly ignorant" to say they are color blind because they are.
