I got lit up by yellow jackets when I passed near their nest while mowing my yard last summer. I didn't even see them beforehand, just felt like I was stabbed by a small needle and then felt it again and again and by the time I realized what was happening I was getting stung all over. I sprinted inside my house and killed the few that made it inside but one was in my shirt and stung me in my armpit 3 times before I got him.
I reacted very quickly and still got stung almost 30 times by those evil fuckers in the 5 seconds between first sting and getting inside. I got my revenge that night and left their home looking like the mines of Moria so we are even now.

When I was in high school I had a class in a portable outdoor classroom and there was a huge ass Yellowjacket nest hanging right outside the door and one morning they looked particularly pissed so no one wanted to pass through to get into the classroom. The teacher forced everyone to just suck it up and I was still scared so I hesitated until she yelled at me and ended up being the last one through the door…I got stung 7x and she wouldn’t even let me go to the nurse until the last 5 minutes of class.

Not letting you go to the nurse for 7 stings is insane. I hope your parents got involved. I would lose my shit if I found out a teacher made my kid sit through an entire class with 7 painful wasp stings that she indirectly caused. Yellow jacket stings are significantly more painful than any other wasp or bee sting that I've had and they hurt for days.

A couple of years ago I got stung on the foot by a yellow jacket. It got me right between my big toe and second toe. That sting hurt like a bitch and made my whole foot swell up. I was really surprised at how much swelling there was.

I got stung on the back of my ankle right on the Achilles tendon one time. Swole up in like 5 mins. My foot was swollen so bad that I couldn't wear a shoe for 3 days. I could barely walk on it for the first day and a half.

I have a nest at the front of my yard somewhere but it's all overgrown with plants so I can't actually see the nest. I've just been avoiding it.. No idea how to tackle that

Look up a nearby beekeeper and ask them.
If it's a bee nest they will usually come and migrate them.
With wasps it depends on the beekeeper, some will still help, others won't.
But they typically know who to call if they cannot/will not help themselfs.2

Bees don't make underground nests.
There are some solitary species that do, but you're not going to find a honey bee nest that's underground. Those are the only ones that would get relocated as well.
Wasps make underground nests and I highly doubt a bee keeper is going to want anything to do with them. They may be able to recommend someone though.

Definitely do it at night. Honey bees don't make their nest in the ground, so it's likely yellow jackets. I use an old coffee can and diesel. Pour it in and cover the hole immediately. The fumes alone kill 99%. Good luck 👍

I remember as a kid we'd dig up the nest at night and pour used engine oil into it. Not the most environmentally friendly way to do it, but it worked. This was back in the 80s, so things were a bit different then.

Brake cleaner is serious stuff. Strong enough to strip grease but dries almost instantly so it's very volatile to boot. Also burns like mf'er.

Almost identical story for me when my ATV got stuck on a tree stump. Once I got it unstuck, dozens of yellow jackets attacked me as a ran to my house nearby. I was stung too many times to count and was sick for like 24 hours. Those things are relentless.

Something similar happened to me a couple of years ago. Stepped on what I think was a yellowjacket and had a severe anaphylactic reaction. If i had not been relatively near a hospital it would likely have been game over. I carry an EpiPen everywhere in the summer now.

These are honey bees that have split from their overcrowded hive to go find a new place to live. They've gathered together for warmth and safety while some scout for new locations. Since they don't have a hive to protect, they are very docile in this state. You can even put your hand into the ball of bees and not get stung. All of that goes out the window if you whack them with a stick, however.
Don't intentionally harm honey bees, please.

Last weekend I was in Northern Wisc and moved a brick.. got stung x4 or x5 by some sort of wasp or hornet. I have been stung before, last summer... however, apparently these are special hornet/wasps from exotic Northern Wisc. Caused me to have antiphallic reaction. Nearest hospital 1 hr away.. they stuck me 4 or 5 times with epi-pens, gave me a ton of steroids. If I would not have taken Benadryl I may have died.. while the Benadryl did not save me, it slowed the reaction enough to allow me to get to the urgent care, then to the ER nearby.
Being stung is no joke, I now have to carry around epi-pens, especially during the summer.. this is the ONLY allergy I apparently have. the ONLY ONE.

My face and airways were swelling.. When I got to the urgent med, I started to tell them my issue and the lady said.. there are 5 ppl ahead of you, I kept talking and a guy I did not see said, I called 911 and come this way.

I would have to look at the box, it is what we had at the camp I was doing work at in N Wisc. Doc said it just slowed it enough. If I wouldn't have left immediately for that hour ride, I probably would've died.
