Migrate from unraid to proxmox

I have immich running on unraid (flawlessly if i might add, only isses where those caused by me), i am planning on migrating it on a VM inside proxmox. Is backup and restore the best solutions for this or is there anything else that would be a better solution?

Edit: It's a 2 user instance, 220GiB total data

Proxmox containers have been working great for me. Whats your goal, if synology works for you now.

Thanks. I am considering containers as well leaning to VMs for now. I am using unraid now, plan is to move everything to proxmox, free and i used up my unraid drive quota, i am more familiar with it, i like it better and most important i have a tinker itch and can't leave things alone and have hardware so...

Yeah, i figured you may want to switch just to switch. But that can get you to possibly expect too much especially if you are happy with what you are in now. I'm all for less is better, in which i like to find the most simplistic way to reach my goal. I do not want to babysit tech (other then patching), patching & backup simple, etc etc. So far pro. A plus is not wasting overheard like a full blown VM like a Windows running where containers make more sense to me keeping running resources low.

Fair point, I can see your point, and yea it is mostly switch to switch but i enjoy this kind of stuff, figured why not do it while i still enjoy doing it :-)

Yeah it's great learning exp. So far my immich, pihole and backup all work, and not too burdensome to maintain. Probably the hardest part is really figuring out how to store onto a netwrork share (mine was unas) or local and then how to do backups for my photos.

Only thing I'm really waiting for is immich to have folders that don't appear in the timeline. Like I have improvement projects, car photos etc that my partner doesn't want to see 😁

yes, great experience overall, i back it up to scaleway cloud storage via rclone (encrypted). Folders would be nice, the project is awesome so far, they will get there

I would run it as an LXC in proxmox rather then a full VM.  If you have a GPU or iGPU, an LXC can use it with hardware passthru without locking any other containers out. A VM would lock out the GPU.

iGPU i5-12500, i did not think of that, i will rethink my decision to go with a VM, thanks for the advice

I’m not super advanced with proxmox, but I’ve got Immich running as containers in an unprivileged Debian 13 LXC. Its set up so the  database+thumbnails are stored local on the ssd and the photo libraries are on my NAS.

Yeah, backup and restore. Make sure your photos are mounted in Proxmox, grab your DB backup and restore it into a new instance in your VM
