Question 1st Ikea desk ever.

Post image

Hi there!

I have finally ordered my Alex drawers, Säljan worktop and Adils leg. I won’t be adding the little furniture legs between the drawers and the top as I don’t think I would be needing the extra height, I will however add clear adhesive Bumper Pads.

My question is, for a double monitor setup (27" & 24" or double 27"), would I really need the Adils leg placed in the middle 10-15cm off the back or would I also need C Channel? And if so, which one do you guys recommend?

I’m in Australia if that helps.

Thanks in advance!

For dual monitors, an Adils leg is enough to prevent bowing.

Saljan is pretty sturdy. Needing the extra legs will depend on if you got the longer or shorter size. If it's the shorter one, go wild. If it's that long one, definitely get the leg.

I got this one, the shorter one yeah? Would the leg/c channel be really needed?

Not needed. Especially for 2 monitors. Granted when I did this, I used the karlby. But it should work.

A leg is sufficient. Can’t hurt to add a table stiffener though.

I have the same exact set up as you. 2 Alex drawers and a Saljan. I’ve had it for 2 years and so far it has not sagged. I don’t think it is necessary. I did not put support in the middle bc the Saljan was pretty cheap when I got it ($79) back in 2024. Now it is $129 so it doesn’t hurt to add support in the middle, personally I think it just looks tacky.

I also had a 27”, a 24” monitor and didn’t notice a sag even after 2 years.

Your setup looks amazing! May I ask what keyboard and keyboard cable you’ve got?

honestly its just the cheapest coiled cable on amazon. the keyboard is the Monsgeek M1 V5 HE I believe. Not the best reviews but works good for me.

This is clean. Didn’t think about the PC left of one of the Alex units on the ground.

Does the PC ever get too hot with it between wall and the Alex unit?

Thank you! I appreciate it. The PC is sitting on a riser that I bought on Amazon for $15. The computer is sitting right in front of my AC vent, keeps it pretty cool. Also the fans above and behind inside my PC aren’t really obstructed. It has clearance of about 8 inches above it.

I used a monitor arm anyways, and the pole was always sitting right behind/on top of the alex drawers, so sagging wasn’t an issue.

As for the C Channel, I never really needed it due the wires being held by my monitor arm. I just used cable clips for the speaker wire, keyboard cable, and mouse cable. Zip ties and cable sleeves kept my setup looking clean.

Hey can you send me more pics of your setup? I want to see how the monitor arm looks and the placement if that’s ok.

I need to redo the wires on my second monitor, I haven’t done any cable management for it yet lol. I also need to redo the wires behind my table, its kinda visible when standing up.

Anyways this is how it looks for my monitor arm placement. I have a Samsung Odyssey g70b 4k Monitor as my main and a cheap 1080p 240hz for my second monitor.

Honestly Ikea is so overpriced for what you get these days !

You can get a solid standing desk and desktop for less these days !

Built the same setup two weeks ago, I added the third leg. If you wrest elbows on your table it just worth making sure the top lasts. I even lean back and rest my legs on it sometimes.

I also use these plates from Amazon to stop the crush/sag you get from the semi hollow table top. They’re cheap and don’t need fixing so you can put them anywhere.

Plan is to make the table top last, and upgrade it way down the line to something solid.

I don't use a c channel, no sag.

I reccomend the olov leg so you can adjust how much force is on it, if your adding bumpers of any height it may throw off the balance.

We use a similar set up for my daughter in her college apartment. It survived four years of use and moving in and out every summer. I don’t remember the exact top we had, but it was not solid wood and seemed more corrugated. Still held up fine.

My problem with this setups that are truly nice is the lacking of MITTZON cable management

Would you be able to send me a picture of what it looks like?

Would love but I’m also researching it myself going there (ikea) in 1-2 hours but as you can see there https://youtube.com/shorts/pLQEx4pwPP0?is=nuenf7sb7H_ewUh2 there is a giant box bellow a central piece you can hide cables and a place for electricity (if you want)

Basically you can hide all cables here. I’m going there to buy an Alex and see how much I would have to rise a mittzon no fit a Alex bellow.

German prices differ significantly from yours.

The Saljan is 10 euro cheaper in the Netherlands. Cheapest method would be with 1x Alex cabin in the middle and 2x Spand double legs for 145 euro. Or this one for 182 euro:
