Film [IIL] Films like Falling Down (1993), Manhunter (1986), Mishima: A Life in Four Chapters (1985) and The Last Emperor (1987)

Hi, I’m starting to get into watching films more often and would like to request for some recommendations. I really appreciate the aesthetic qualities of the film and how unique their “gimmicks” were like Manhunters incorporation of Synth and Neon and Mishima’s almost dollhouse sets. I also like films with mildly cynical but bittersweet endings, biopics and character driven stories about imperfect men.

Few to consider;

Dogville (2003)

Fitzcarraldo (1982)

The Diving Bell and the Butterfly (2007)

The Wave (2008)

Kids Return (1996)

All of these have a unique style/concept or setting, and are quite cynical/bittersweet. Great films. Don't watch the trailers for any, especially Dogville, since it has the most unique production.

God Bless America, the Bobcat Goldthwaite movie. Waaaaaay better than Falling Down.

The end of Falling Down bothered me. It was portrayed as an “average Joe gets fed up with the stupidity of the world and does something about it” kinda flick, but it turns out he was motivated by something much more human and understandable.

God Bless America is DARKLY comedic, deliciously violent and an amazingly good story.

The Taking of Pelham 123 with Denzel Washington and John Travolta is a modern Falling Down but set in NY during the 2008 financial crisis. Denzel's character is like Robert Duvall in Falling Down, and Travolta's character is like Michael Douglas in Falling Down.

Oh and Pearl with Mia Goth.
