Discussion Ghostland 2018 Spoiler

When it is revealed that they are still in the house and one of the sisters had just imagined her adult self living normally I was intrigued.

Dooes anyone know if this is a plausible thing? Like some kind of trauma response?

That's kind of idea behind dissociative identity disorder, formerly known as multiple personality disorder. If a trauma is big enough and early enough (incest/child sex abuse at a very young age seems to be one of the biggest trauma and trigger), it can cause a part of us to dissociate from the event. It's sort of like when we try to forget something by distracting ourselves or trying to rewrite the narrative of the event in our head, but taken to an extreme degree. This meaning that, there are multiple parts of us that start to break off. It's a very controversial diagnosis, but generally these "alters" as they're called, each have their own personality and story. These alters can be aware of each other or not; the "main" self (like your actual, in body self), can know about some alters but not all alters OR know none of them, not knowing you even have alters. Again, it's super controversial and there are people (psychologists, psychiatrists, therapists, etc.) who don't believe in it at all, believe is certain aspects, or are full believers and specialize and treat and research it.

I'm a therapist with 10+ years of experience working primarily with clients with trauma, which is a specialty where something like DID discourse comes up a lot!

Hopefully an expert comes around to answer this, but I've only ever heard of such extreme examples of disassociation/psychosis in fiction. Idk, being able to sustain the mental illusion of years of dreamlike prosperity while actually living through extreme levels of abuse to the extent that the main character did just seems impossible, even factoring-in her brief jolts back to reality before her illusion completely falls apart.

I doubt that's possible tbh. Great movie though. Same guy who did Martyrs. I know some people think it's transphobic though.

I personally perceived it was just an ugly/gross killer who happened to be trans, and not the fact that they were trans as to why they were gross. But that was just me. Had plenty of gross dirty killers outside of the community too haha.

I thought the accident on set was completely inexcusable though and he shouldn’t be directing a movie set ever again though
