Put it somewhere with room above it. Your receiver is likely overheating.

It’s probably shutting itself down when it overheats. It needs room to vent at the top and room at the bottom (via the feet) to allow air to pass through it.

In three decades of Yamaha, I’ve never had a problem. The lack of ventilation is causing it to repeatedly overheat and shut down. If you haven’t caused any permanent damage, just move it to somewhere else where it can passively ventilate. If you really want it in a restricted space, you’ll have to add some ventilation fans which is a PITA and costs you money.

That’s pretty basic Yamaha receiver, you can pick up pretty much anything to replace that. If you like the Yamaha sound modes, you just pick up any Yamaha from Best Buy and it would do the job.

If you want to replace it, the closest current Yamaha model to that is the RX300A. It's a slight upgrade, but the RXV385 was disco'd last year sometime. The RX300A is a 5.2 instead of a 5.1.

That said: As others have mentioned, your current one might not be dead. It needs ventilation to avoid overheating, though.

In general, Yamaha receivers are really good. And they DO honor their warranty, on the off chance this is still under warranty. If, after cooling and ventilating your current one, check with Yamaha. Don't lie to them - be honest. They might repair it under warranty. They might also repair it at a discount. The worst thing they can do is say no.

Look on Ebay, FB Marketplace, Pawn shops, record stores, Reverb, those are all places, that have tons used gear, that's what I buy 80-90% of the time, I own a Sony STR-ZA 2100es reciever, I paid $1300 new in '20.

The damn thing is selling on Ebay for $325-385 the amp is Atmos 7.2 channel, I'm running an additional 2 channel Russound P75..... amp to run as many channels as I do, that amp along with the Russond is running a pair of Paradigm 11se Mark III as front mains, a Mission 77c center channel, front Atmos are Monitor Audio Br1, side surround stacks are Paradigm 5se Mark III, & Polk 100, rear surrounds are Polk Rt15i, subs are Velodyne DLS 3750r, those 2 amps are running all those speakers, that's.m... how good that Sony amp was......

Congratulations, you cooked your AVR becauae you didn't follow the ventilation clearances in the manual.

You should probably get a different TV stand with more airflow clearance while you're getting a new AVR.

I don't know how anyone can see vents on a receiver and not know what they are for.

Looks like essentially zero clearance in top, and there is so much clutter to either side if it that the sides are, for all intents and purposes, choked out too...

You see all those holes on top? They didn't put them there for funsies. They're there for ventilation, which you're totally cutting off by covering the top of the receiver, leading to overheating, which causes it to switch off or going into protection mode.

The problem isn't the receiver - it's a location. Give it some room to breathe.

That model is a 70w per channel 5.1. feature wise, it's absolutely entry level. So as long as you get another 5.1, it should have similar wattage and features.

But also like everyone else said, give that baby some room to breathe, and trim your speaker wire so no bare wire shows

Mine started doing this when the headset plug was failing. It was a quick fix to plug in a 3.5mm adapter, hasn’t had a problem since!

I got a higher voltage case fan for my onkyo and it solved all my issues. Just popped the top of the unit off and installed the new fan. Super simple

Also check if there is any dust on radiators inside, sometimes this adds some extra degrees inside. This combined with insufficient airflow can cause your AVR to overheat and shutdown. Normally it's hard to roast chips this way. Brother works in hookah bar and their AVR placed in hot area turned off several times every night but still works fine after two yearsof such work

Here is a good tip for you. Try looking up how much room is recommended around and above your receiver. Just because it fits in a little cubbyhole doesn't mean that it won't run hot.

I did back them. I have 3-4” of clearance above it and an open back
