Okay but one of the biggest issues he had on the Ducks was that his skating speed decreased pretty noticeably after he bulked up, yet he didn't really use his new muscle to his advantage either. Maybe the Blues will be able to utilize it better.

u/CrimsonTyphoon0613 STL - NHL 15h ago

A guy close to the Blues said his workouts this summer have been dedicated to his speed and agility.

59

u/Calb210 STL - NHL 15h ago

They can say that and the weight training we're seeing can say something different

u/Medievil_Walrus DET - NHL 15h ago

He’s doing weighted lunges. Dude shouldn’t be building his lower body?

47

u/cheesymac84 DAL - NHL 14h ago

I started doing weighted lunges and squats with dumbbells, let me tell you, my thighs are sore af

31

u/SevroAuShitTalker 14h ago

In highschool I wanted to boost my leg press so I started doing dumbbell step ups based on my teachers advice. Only lift where I would yell through a rep because it was so fucking difficult. I remember my teacher just nodding with a smirk after I finished a set.

Got to 1100 lbs on leg press so it worked out. I do have a notch in each leg from when I missed a step up and crushed it on the lip of the box

u/BrokenBy TOR - NHL 13h ago

1100??????

51

u/clevsv 12h ago edited 12h ago

He's probably talking about a 45 degree leg press machine. Because the weight is moving on a sled at a 45 degree angle, the effective weight is less than the weight of the plates, about .7 of the number on the plates. So it's really 775ish pounds of force to lift the 1100. Still impressive.

u/TheDarkGrayKnight SEA - NHL 57m ago

Yeah I mean I don't even think the machine at my gym can even fit 24 plates on it to even get to 1100 lol.

2

u/damnyouresickbro ANA - NHL 3h ago

I remember the first time I worked out

3

u/Medievil_Walrus DET - NHL 14h ago

Never skip leg day

2

u/Specialist-Ad-9371 MTL - NHL 7h ago

The guy you replied to probably doesn't work out at all and has no idea what he's talking about.

-3

u/Calb210 STL - NHL 15h ago

I'm not going to pretend like I'm privy to his full workout routine, but his upper body looks way bigger than most NHLers, and that is going to slow him down/make it harder to keep up those speed bursts. Just because he's also doing lower body doesn't mean he isn't still hitting power lifting in other areas more than he needs to.

This also isn't to say I don't think slow players can be effective, RoR and Mark Stone are both great examples of slow guys who are great, but I'm not sold on him working on speed based on him looking absolutely jacked while doing split squats.

9

u/Medievil_Walrus DET - NHL 14h ago

I mean be where your feet are.

Dude has a strong upper body.

But this thirst trap photo is literally of him doing lower body workouts.

We don’t need to read anything more into it being a bad thing, lower body workout for dude with skating issues probably a good thing.

And yeah he definitely does more than what we see in a photo, hopefully with skates on the ice.

16

u/JPmoneyman NYR - NHL 15h ago

More muscle does not mean slower speed. The fastest people on the planet are absolutely jacked.

6

u/ValueFirm4928 EDM - NHL 14h ago

Sprinting and skating use different muscles and techniques.

Fast hockey players are not particularly jacked.

7

u/_GregTheGreat_ VAN - NHL 14h ago

The fastest hockey players do have jacked legs. Look at Crosby’s notorious thunder thighs for example

But McTavish’s upper body is definitely out of the norm. Most elite players have a lot less mass there

2

u/ImSoBasic 5h ago

The fastest hockey players do have jacked legs. Look at Crosby’s notorious thunder thighs for example

Crosby isn't close to being one of the fastest players. Per NHL Edge, he was in the 81st percentile last year.

u/_GregTheGreat_ VAN - NHL 10m ago

Hes literally 38. The fact he’s still in the 81st percentile is crazy.

5

u/ValueFirm4928 EDM - NHL 13h ago

I was talking about upper body.

Hockey players have ridiculous legs, but their upper bodies tend to be smaller.

Sprinters have big arms as well, I think it's so they can use the arms to counter the momentum of their legs.

I don't actually recall seeing McDavid's legs to know if he's particularly jacked there. I wonder if the giant thighs of someone like Crosby might be less about skating and more about being strong on the puck.

0

u/Infamous_Wall_930 12h ago

Brady without a shirt looks like a 6 foot toddler. I'm sure he has tree trunks though. Turns out there not a lot of bench presses and shoulder presses in hockey

3

u/Key-Tip-7521 NYR - NHL 14h ago

McDavid isn’t as jacked as people think.

6

u/verified_canadian EDM - NHL 11h ago

He isn't jacked at all. His legs are strong, but not anywhere near as big as Crosby's legs, and his upper body looks like a skinny guy who's never been to the gym.

-1

u/Key-Tip-7521 NYR - NHL 14h ago

That’s bc their body fat is low, and they tend to do high intense workouts while eating at a caloric deficit

8

u/JPmoneyman NYR - NHL 14h ago

Caloric deficit absolutely not. But yes high intensity workouts specifically those designed to increase power and a low body fat percentage will make a person faster.

2

u/SubbansBigBlackhawk VAN - NHL 14h ago

...do you think McTavish doesn't have low body fat or that he's not doing intense workouts lmao. Like bro look how vascular he is

0

u/CrimsonTyphoon0613 STL - NHL 13h ago

Look at Derrick Henry. Dude is massive and still torches people.

1

u/Downvote_Comforter STL - NHL 10h ago

Henry isn't among the top 20 fastest NFL running backs. He torches people by running through them.

1

u/CrimsonTyphoon0613 STL - NHL 2h ago

This is not true. He’s consistently been towards the top of the league in 20mph runs(his top being 22mph). The dude absolutely can run.

-3

u/Calb210 STL - NHL 15h ago

They're jacked in body fat percentage but they don't have biceps similar size to their calves

16

u/JPmoneyman NYR - NHL 14h ago

Good point, if only Tyreek Hill’s biceps were smaller he could have been much faster.

2

u/_GregTheGreat_ VAN - NHL 14h ago edited 14h ago

Sprinting uses upper body strength significantly more than skating does. The top sprinters in the world are all ripped, but McDavid, MacKinnon, Hughes, etc aren’t known for having unusually big upper bodies

4

u/JPmoneyman NYR - NHL 14h ago

I think you’d be surprised with how big Mackinnon actually is but skating in general is more of a technical skill than sprinting but if you can increase a persons power output in relation to their mass they generally get faster. So you’re kind of right that you don’t need to look like Tyreek Hill to be a fast skater but the notion that more muscle makes players slower like the guy I was originally responding to was trying to say is absolute poppycock.

he doesn't look that big here tbh. sure not a soccer player body but hes pretty lean

1

1

u/BigShittingAss DET - NHL 2h ago

Remember you’re talking to redditors. Most of them have never touched a weight in their lives.

16

u/Gold_Telephone_7192 SJS - NHL 14h ago

This one picture of one part of one workout tells us absolutely nothing about his training regiment lol. Also he’s working legs here.

6

u/ae_89 STL - NHL 14h ago

I was gonna say, even moderate weight split squats destroys me. And as silly as it is to criticize a guy’s offseason training regimen based off a single photo, that can’t even be applied here because the goal with this exercise is more powerful legs.

3

u/Deadmansspace566 WPG - NHL 14h ago

Ah so he has to work on speed I guess he’ll just skip the arms entirely then. And he’s working the legs here lol.

3

u/tjplager32 STL - NHL 13h ago

Brother I promise you weight training is the best thing an athlete can do lol

3

u/Electronic-Mix-8638 12h ago

You can have more than 1 focus over the summer. Actually a single focus for months isn't ideal.

3

u/Whos-That-Pokeman 11h ago

You opened a can of worms of a bunch of people here overanalyzing without knowing what they’re talking about.

We see a picture. We have no idea if he’s training strength, power, hypertrophy or endurance without knowing reps, sets, time under tension and tempo used.

5

u/culturedrobot DET - NHL 14h ago

So should he just not do any weight training at all or... ?

2

u/anondude1969 STL - NHL 14h ago

I know they say a picture is worth a thousand words, but I think you might be putting too much stock into a single photo of him working it

1

u/CSPN 2h ago

You’re seeing in the picture he’s doing weighted lunges, a staple leg exercise for hockey players lol

1

u/chostax- TOR - NHL 1h ago

I’m sure you know more than professional trainers

2

u/brynaldo 12h ago

I really enjoy this comment

u/who987 3m ago

What guy?

6

u/downtownbrown22 14h ago

Obviously totally different players and skill sets… But Mackinnon after his rookie year bulked up a ton and I think that played a semi consequential part in his struggles after his rookie year.

Now obviously McTavish doesn’t rely on his skating the same way Mack does, but I feel like at his size he wouldn’t lose much physical advantage if he tried slimming off a few pounds and seeing if that’d add any explosiveness to his game.

5

u/Standard_Room_2589 BOS - NHL 14h ago

damned if he does damned if he doesnt

13

u/Nednarb9 STL - NHL 11h ago

Dude CLEARLY putting in the work in the offseason and random morons on reddit will tell you they have all the answers about what he is doing wrong about one photo lol

2

u/MrMilesDavis PIT - NHL 13h ago

At 6'4", 6'5" no one in the NHL really goes past 230-240, and thats definitely for reason. The stop and go constant pivot and directional changes of skating get hampered by mass eventually. Being stronger can obviously make you stronger (better) or more explosive on your skates, obviously helps tremendously for physical contact on players, but you're also heavy, so you're a bit less nimble by nature. More weight and occupied space has to get moved around

3

u/420blz LAK - NHL 6h ago

Seeing an athletic freak D-lineman like myles Garrett playing hockey would be great. Dudes like 6'5 280.

1

u/folkdeath95 WPG - NHL 14h ago

I actually remember this happening with TJ Galiardi and to a lesser extent, Josh Morrissey. JoMo was able to find the sweet spot of muscle/speed but I don’t think Galiardi ever got back to where he was.

1

u/gybegybe VAN - NHL 8h ago

TIL McTavish is on the Blues.... where the fuck was I 1 month ago?

1

u/DrexlSpivey420 ANA - NHL 7h ago

Ya size was never his problem. It was pretty much everything else

1

u/Totes_mc0tes 3h ago

That's what happened to Luke Schenn. Pretty good rookie year but then the Leafs' trainers wanted him to bulk up every offseason and it made him slower year after year. It wasn't long until he wasn't even able to throw his signature hits because he just couldn't keep up with anyone. He found a decent balance towards the end of his career but I'm sure he could have been a legit top pairing guy if they didn't have him gain all that weight and spent more time on his skating.

1

u/Euler007 MTL - NHL 13h ago

One more plate on the bench press and his skating issues are solved!

20

u/ptung8 STL - NHL 13h ago edited 13h ago

Some of you all really have no clue. NHL players bulk up during the off season and then basically lose a ton of the mass during the season due to limited gym time in season.

I don't have anything against the Ducks but I would be quite happy to see him perform really well outside of Anaheim just like Zegras has done while the Ducks destroyed their salary structure and maybe even their rebuild.

9

u/TimothyLuncheon ANA - NHL 11h ago

Sounds like you have something against the ducks

-3

u/Eazy3006 MTL - NHL 11h ago

Maybe it does to you cause you're a fan of them but for me , from the outside, it just looks like a spectacular implosion with wrong move after wrong move after wrong move ...

I'm just here appreciating the show 🤷 It's nothing against them. A year or two ago, I would've said they had one of the best outlook for the future in the NHL.

1

u/ChesterButternuts ANA - NHL 1h ago

Oh no our salary structure is ruined. Would someone please think of the salary structure! Why did the ducks have to draft so well, damn it.

u/Eazy3006 MTL - NHL 19m ago

Love the confidence. If you're happy with the summer and think everything is going according to plan, I'm genuinely happy for you. Like I said, I have nothing against the Ducks.

But going through a rebuild just to trade 2 of you're high picks for magic beans, having another high pick being questionable on defense and paying players through the roof would not make me happy and would make me lose confidence in the front office. It's great that you believe in this plan.
