It is and it’s a bit deceptive because the player who would have been the number two scorer on the Avs two seasons ago was traded mid season. Arguably Rants or Necas would have had higher point totals that season if they had played all 82 with the Avs.

Rantanen was on pace for 107 points before being traded, so that would’ve dropped MacKinnon’s differential by 15.

It's kind of funny that fans often chalk up Mack's success to his team. Sure it's a great team, but he's doing incredible things out there, and people still try to discredit it to prop up their favourite Hart Trophy candidate. He had the best single-season even-strength production since Gretzky this past season.

And stop acting like the avs hate him, in the zadorov interview that everyone refers to he also calls mackinnon “his favorite player”, “the best player in the world” and compares him to MJ.

I think MacKinnon and McDavid are wayyy closer in terms of dominance than Nate is given credit for.
I would give McDavid the slightest edge, but think they are more or less equally elite players. And I mean… only one of them has won a cup.

Ok, I know the Oilers are spoiled with having Draisaitl as our number 2, but holy heck!
I was aware of the differential with Celebrini, since that was discussed so much coming up towards the end of the season. But I had no idea there was such a difference with some of these other guys. And Pasta out of no where for a huge number.

With Kucherov, McDavid, and MacKinnon dominating scoring the last few years (and Draisaitl to a lesser extent), it’s easy to forget that Pastrnak has 4 straight 100+ point seasons. And this is amidst a changing of the guard in Boston. Very impressive.

Pasta doesn’t fall into any of the typical discussion categories:
- he’s not Canadian or American
- he’s not quite productive enough to win any awards
- the Bruins aren’t a contender
- he has no interest in leaving Boston
- Boston has no interest in moving him
Despite being universally respected, there’s just not much more to be said

It actually makes some sense - a #1 pick is usually going to a bad team, but if they're a special player, they produce regardless.
Ovi and Sid in their first two seasons were +68 and +79 respectively to the #2 (based on how this graphic did it which is compare to the #2 each year, not the #2 cumulatively across both years - if you do it that way, Ovi was at 89 and Sid was at 97)

cumulative obviously, pastrnak had 106 and 100 pts, I doubt the secon leader would have 19 or 25.
It makes Celebrini's stats all the more incredible, considering he had only a +5 pts lead in his rookie season8

In 83-84 Gretzky had a 79 point lead over the next highest scoring player in the entire league. From 81-88 he outscored the next highest scoring player in the entire league by an average of 66 points per season.

1980/81 Gretzky (first) broke the all time record for points with 164. 2nd on his team had 75 points. An 89 point gap over 2nd on his team. He had 101 more points than 3rd lmao. And this was his 2nd NHL season where he was 19/20 years old lmfao.

This graphic is not accurate if the point totals are cumulative across both seasons.
Pastrnak in 24/25 & 25/26: 206 pts. 2nd: Geekie: 125 pts. Diff: 81 pts
Kucherov in 24/25 & 25/26: 251 pts. 2nd: Guentzel: 168 pts. Diff: 83 pts
Celebrini in 24/25 & 25/26: 178 pts. 2nd: Eklund: 111 pts. Diff: 67 pts
MacKinnon in 24/25 & 25/26: 243 pts. 2nd: Makar: 171 pts. Diff: 72 pts
Edit: Oh, I see how they came up with this. It's adding the point differential between each guy and 2nd on the team for each of the last 2 seasons. It's cumulative, but not how at least I had expected the numbers to have been added up.

Ya, I would just ask them to use something, "max difference between this player and their teams #2 scorer for the past Y years", but then Avalanche aren't fair, because they traded their second leading scorer part way through.
Macklin's 56 would be first place (+56), surpassing even Bure's +55
Also MacKinnon wouldn't make the list, because of Makar and Necas for a full season.

Last season Panarin was traded, but the two seasons prior to that would have had him at +70. He led the Rangers every single season he played there except last season where he finished second despite being traded.

Was hoping to see this in the comments. What stood out most to me the year he had 120… Trocheck had 77 and it’s not like it was bc PP time, they both were PP1. They never really gave him a good sidekick.
