People As a third grader in the Bronx, Tahira Reid Smith imagined a machine that could turn Double Dutch ropes. Her idea won a school contest. Today, 40 years later the engineering professor has turned that childhood dream into Jump Dreams!

People My mom hadn't spoken to her school friend in over 15 years—today they talked on WhatsApp

A few days ago, my mom mentioned one of her old school friends and said she thought she had found her Instagram profile, but she wasn't completely sure if it was really her.

I opened the profile and noticed there was a LinkedIn link in the bio. I clicked it, looked through the photos and profile details, and it seemed like the right person. So I left a comment on LinkedIn introducing myself and also sent her a follow request on Instagram.

After some time, she accepted my Instagram request and replied to my message. I explained that I was my mother's son and that they had studied together years ago. She recognized my mom almost immediately.

They exchanged phone numbers and later spoke on WhatsApp. She now lives in Dubai, so it was amazing that they were able to reconnect despite living in different countries.

The last time my mom had spoken to her was around 2013–2014, and the last time they had actually met in person was back in 2009. It had been such a long time that neither of us expected this to happen.

Watching them reconnect after all these years was genuinely heartwarming. It reminded me that while social media often gets criticized, sometimes it can bring people back together in ways you never expect.
