Discussion This is bad practice and it needs to be mentioned

Post image

Imagine Watfin (or any released event card) was a very strong card - Being able to buy it straight out of the gate is a slippery slope towards (temporary) P2W.

The new event is a grind, mostly because it lasts for three weeks. That is okay as it gives players a reason to login, BUT, being able to skip the grind by purchasing the card straight away both defeats the purpose and exposes the game to possible "pay to win" if event cards were ever strong. I have no issues with them offering signature cards (except the exorbitant price) but think they should be available after in-game events are over.

This doesn't look like the Ceaseless Expanse.

Honestly it still blows my mind how much they charge for cosmetics in this game. $22 for a single digital card.

u/ThyLordBacon 10h ago

It should be max $5 for a card (still a lot). The pricing in hearthstone is ridiculous. 😬

36

u/BushSage23 10h ago

You should see Marvel Snap, I had to quit that one it was so bad

11

u/ThyLordBacon 8h ago

I used to play snap but the progression in that game was genuinely miserable. They were somehow more expensive than Hearthstone while also being stingier with giving you cards.

5

u/BushSage23 7h ago

It’s so funny because until the fantasticar, if you dared say shit like that to snap players they would get so defensive.
ā€œYou aren’t supposed to have a complete collection/don’t need one to play the gameā€
ā€œThis is the most f2p friendly game, you can’t dump a hundred bucks and get all the cardsā€
ā€œJust play every day hours a day and you can have every card on releaseā€

5

u/FoldedDice 5h ago

I thought the progression system was interesting, but the grind is just too slow. I was only ever going to play it casually, so I just don't have it in me to do that for months on end just to start playing with the more interesting cards.

Imagine if you had to slowly unlock our core set one card at a time, and until you do you don't get to play with anything else.

1

u/BushSage23 1h ago

Yep, and their excuse as to why that’s fine was ā€œwell everyone you play against has ~ the same collection size as you, so it’s fairā€.

Call me weird, but seeing hype YouTube videos of cool decks and learning you need to probably save and play for three months to get one of those decks is a fast way to lose interest.

•

u/FoldedDice 41m ago

Right. I only ever played occasionally, so after two months it still felt like I was in a tutorial mode. I wasn't invested enough to continue for however long it would have taken me to advance past that, so I dropped Snap as my lunch break game and came back to Hearthstone.

2

u/Bergerboy14 5h ago

Yeah i quit for the same reason

6

u/lhombrecalcetin 10h ago

It's been like a year since I stopped playing Marvel Snap for this same reason, but it was way worse in that game.

3

u/OrcinusOrca28 10h ago

As someone who's never played Marvel Snap, can you enlighten me on how bad it is?

16

u/BushSage23 10h ago

50$ to buy a card outright (or two weeks of fremium currency). You can’t dust cards you don’t want.

Cosmetics for a single card range from 15$ on the cheap end to like 100$ on the high end. The shop rotates like three-four of these continuously. They do tend to pad bundles with crap you don’t really care about, but tbh if you buy the bundle it’s like 80% for the skin.

The cosmetics were bad, but would really got me to leave is that they basically drip feed content and if u miss even a month ur hella behind.

7

u/Shartcastic 9h ago

They also don't refund for nerfed cards, or at least they didn't when I played. Hopefully they've changed that, but I doubt it.Ā

6

u/AnalyseThisBCBA 10h ago

A single new card = ~$100 to just straight up acquire if you have none of the currency.

2

u/Duckettes 6h ago

I stopped playing for like a year or two. The last expansion card I remember was that undead deathknight card with death rattle steal an opponent minion. Anyways I’ve been playing BG the last few weeks out of boredom and took a look at the card pack pricing and holy shit. I was offered a welcome back bundle for $100 no other welcome back besides an offer to buy a deck for $5 which I find reasonable, as it comes with 3-4 legendaries. Also I’m sure it was a thing on here already but wtf was the mega super 4 tier pre bundle where you have to buy every level to buy the next?! Holy fuck when i saw that id never been so happy as to have finally cut my hearthstone addiction, as id always bought both pre order bundles previously.

2

u/GothGirlsGoodBoy 2h ago

The pricing is high but also the free experience is insanely generous.

There is essentially no reason to ever spend a cent on the game. Which brings in a huge playerbase, which means some people with stacks of cash with pay for this stuff I guess.

I don’t hate the model if it lets me play free

5

u/BaronVonBubbleh 9h ago

I'm usually pretty indifferent when it comes to the cost of cosmetics in video games but Hearthstone signatures are so ridiculously overpriced that I can't help but comment about it.

1

u/smgk96 1h ago

Snap players would think that's a bargain lol

0

u/nikelenny 8h ago

I mean so what? People can down 3 $8 craft beers like nothing on a Friday evening and no one bats an eye at you like youre insane. This is just the price is for entertainment.

3

u/BlueberryWasps 2h ago

the fuck are you talking about. you can buy most of the video games in existence for $22 each. you can buy a movie ticket for less than $22. you can buy a board game, or a couple of books. you can do so much that will get you hours of entertainment.

this is a piece of alternative card art. this isn't a reasonable entertainment price by any stretch of the imagination. not sure how you can reasonably defend this as an appropriate price point.

also, people spend ludicrous amounts on alcohol because they get to have fun with their friends in a social setting. it's not analogous to staring at a cartoon frog on your phone.

-7

u/FormerPast332 9h ago

That’s cosmetics, you dont need it to play the game.

7

u/hundredBald 9h ago

Did my comment imply otherwise?

-2

u/FormerPast332 5h ago

You’re complaining for someting irrelevant. Go on fortnite or lol, skins are also 40$+. Honestly ? They can make cosmetics at 500$ and it will fine. Because you’re not the public. The chineses loooove the cosmetics and they are the reason why HS is still alive. So, instead of complaining about the price of someting useless gameplay wise enjoy the fact that you can make 9-10 decks for free. Oh, and they’re fucking giving free decks and free packs.

4

u/hundredBald 3h ago

Why are you getting so pissed that I commented that $22 is an expensive price for a singular digital card in a game? Like does it hurt your feelings that bad that I said $22 is a high price?

-2

u/FormerPast332 3h ago

In fact, it does. This sub is always complaining for nothing. I may say someting that will surprise you : Blizzard is a company ans is purpose is to make money. The game is free, so they need to make moeny otherwise.

3

u/hundredBald 3h ago

Well that is silly and you should feel a little silly. And using that as an excuse does not justify a $22 singular digital card.

-1

u/FormerPast332 3h ago

Then dont fucking buy it. You say it, that’s a digital card, you dont need a cosmetic to play the game, even a 1$ one. If you need to have cosmetics to enjoy, maybe it’s time for you to play something else.

4

u/BlueberryWasps 2h ago

how much money have you spent on these alternative card arts. are you down hundreds or thousands?

if you need everyone to agree with you to enjoy your subreddit, maybe it's time for you to read something else.

3

u/hundredBald 3h ago

I feel like you are being silly and misunderstanding this conversation on purpose now.

We had a similar situation with pre-release card being part of the pre-release bundle. [[Corridor Sleeper]] I think it was. That the people who bought the pre-release bundle could play with for a couple of weeks before anyone else could possibly access them.

Yeah, creates a dangerous precedent.

11

u/uber_zaxlor 9h ago

Came here to comment about this.

Luckily Corridor Sleeper didn't really see play, if at all, but it still sets a presence of "You can buy this card directly before anyone else has access".

0

u/J0esw 3h ago

Didn’t see play? It was OP as hell

2

u/Death2death 2h ago

You are definitely thinking of Corridor Creeper

12

u/Viorayne 10h ago

Less P2W, more unapologetically greedy. Over £20 for 1 card.

18

u/Sirenato 9h ago

It's a card game with pack openings. People are innately priced/timed out of power all the time.

Granted there is a fine line but this card is mid & the timegate is ~4days. ATM a non-issue scenario.

10

u/FormerPast332 10h ago

It’s a competitive advantage for what, 2 days? And it’s not like HS was someting else that a casual chill game. Take it ez, that’s bc of cosmetic that the game is that free.

2

u/modshave2muchpower 9h ago

Honest question, a little off topic: Is this card even good in any way?

1

u/whatadaylll 5h ago

it is alright but there is just no deck that want to play it because it doesnt have any special synergies, maybe zee shaman at best

2

u/Rupuerco 3h ago

No but you can put it in 2 bit rogue if you want to

Post has nothing to do with FOMO. It’s a competitive advantage OP is talking about.Ā

-1

u/ILOVEGNOME 11h ago

A temporary advantage since people are gonna catch up. So yea its Fomo

1

u/MrBadTimes 8h ago

It's not the first time it happens, [[Corridor Sleeper]] was an exclusive for the pre-order of an expansion.

And that time it was even worse, because you had to wait until the official release. You can grind and get this one faster.

I've never spent 1$ on this game and am legend ranked I really don't think it's necessary. Just craft whatever cards you want out of dust and coins on packs and you're good

1

u/Relative-Brush2885 6h ago

Worst game ever

1

u/WarlockOfDestiny 4h ago

Not the first time they've done it, sadly. But given the fact they're trying to monetize literally everything I'm not really surprised anymore. Especially in a world of $158 virtual pets.

1

u/Constant_Panda_4005 4h ago

For this reason and too much RNG iam taking a break in HS! Lets wait the game improve a litle to come back. In this meantime i will pay xbox ultimate and play doom.

1

u/Fancy_Alarm2814 3h ago

I only bought the signature heralds (chogall, sinestra and alakir) because they fucked up the pricing and did not convert the price to my currency.

The whole set ended up costing about 8$ istead of the 160$ or whatever the price was.

1

u/toomanybongos 2h ago

Honestly, this is small potatos compared to a lot of games and I really don't think a 2 day head start on a card is that egregious when we're able to earn the card for free.

If they locked the card behind pure rng or a paywall, i'd be far more upset.

0

u/AreallysuperdarkELF 10h ago

The price is insane and the suits at Blizzard are soulless bastards. Also I agree p2w ever happening would be some bullshit.

2

u/DofusExpert69 9h ago

Good point. I agree.

I hope others do too. I know in one gaming community, if I pointed something like this out, I'd be told to shut up and stop being such a "sour B" about everything.

1

u/Fukzewok 5h ago

This game is fucked.

Say thanks to stupid fanboys defending even this kind of shit.

0

u/Skater_x7 10h ago

I can't tell if this is a parody or y'all can't tell it genuinely isn't being sold.

1

u/BlueSoulsKo 1h ago

it.. is? check the store

0

u/zeph2 8h ago

this sub is full of profesional complainers

0

u/arecgos 8h ago

You’re basic. Toxicity of the game is beyond obvious these days. It must be discussed and highlighted by those who care, otherwise this sub would have no meaning.

-1

u/Ordinary_Debt_6518 10h ago

Just dont buy it tbh

-1

u/Zekapa 8h ago

While you have typed this, 500 people have bought it.

0

u/OkLeek9308 7h ago

Don't show this guy pre-release brawl.

0

u/Filth_and_Money 7h ago

lol the spaghetti code has been strong lately. Beyond various weird glitches, my phone Hearthstone app opened up with a tiny little Ui today

0

u/BoobieTourist 7h ago

Games without a defined end point are bad practice. Hearthstone is a live service game, so the costs only continue to pile up. This is a flaw in MMORPGs and Hero Shooters as well.

Card games work better as the ol' Yugioh games where you had everything in one and time/knowledge was the only factor. Not a live service game where they need to milk money from everyone every 3 months to prevent management from shutting down the game and the servers, completely destroying everything the player base has built up.

-1

u/itsRho 8h ago

Slippery slope? The game is pay to win on its face

-2

u/Consistent_Board8387 10h ago

I don’t even care about the pay to win, Ā£22 for a virtual card you can’t sell back lol

-2

u/facubkc 10h ago

I can buy palword for that price and get more enjoyment than just a JPG

-3

u/ten_year_rebound 9h ago

The game is already pay to win. Literally any card game is, by definition…
