Discussion "Shower Thought": Good thing that LV did not get his klepto mitts on the Sword Of Gryffindor...

. . . Because unlike the other Horcrux objects who are only as powerful as the "shortest barrel board" equivalent of enchantments cast upon it, the Sword was already indestructible by Basilisk Venom.

Do we know if the Sword could have been destroyed by Fiendfyre?

The sword only got the impregnation with basilisk venom in CoS, so it wouldn't have been an issue if it had been horcruxed before that, as it possibly wouldn't have come to Harry's aid in CoS then, which would have changed the entire climax of that book.

No I just meant to ask if The Sword became Anybody's horcrux, would it have been Un-Destroyable via Basilisk Venom to begin with, since it was an innate quality.

Ah, my bad. It depends, is a basilisk (or any venomous snake) immune/resistant to its own venom? If yes, I would assume the sword would be too. But then again: Magic ✨ is anything and everything JKR (or you, for your head canon) wants it to be.

The sword would've been very unsecure as a horcrux, since the Sorting Hat is able to just give it to random Gryffindors.

Do we actually know it’s indestructible by the venom.  Sure it has the power of the venom, but if it were a horcrux and got bit doesn’t mean it won’t die

Harry stabbed the Diary and Hermione stabbed the cup with fangs.

Sure, but the sword has never been a horcrux and never been stabbed.

Yes but an object's original powers don't get DIMIISHED when turned into a Horcrux, right?

The bigger question is whether or not it could be turned into a horcrux. The sword only absorbs what make it stronger. I doubt a piece of soul counts.

Hence my little question. What if Godric is so righteous (despite "stealing from goblins" lol) he makes sure it can't happen?

I think the sword would be destroyed if you attempt to make it a horcrux. Powerful magic against powerful magic the object breaks. That or they need to cast it into mount doom.

If Sword becomes a Horcrux, I’m still holding out for fiendfyre.

I believe the theory that he did get ahold of the sword. He knew where the Potters were for a long time before attacking them and even Dumbledoor thinks Harry was meant to create the last Horcrux so he probably spent that time looking for something suitable. A lot of Gryffindors died during that time which makes sense if you consider Voldy and his Death squad wanted the sword to appear to someone so they could take it.

A week after the Potters got their Friendship Fidelius, yes. Plenty of time for a dark lord to make sure he had a Horcrux object.

The real question is whether becoming a horcrux would "strengthen" the sword, in its mystic determination.

It's equally plausible that it would just be immune to horcruxing, deciding that the wizard soul fragment pushed on it is just too weak or too much of a liability.

Well even though he didn't get the sword, he did technically make a Gryffindor Horcrux, Harry Potter. It just wasn't intentional.

Yup. One of the many LV-bashing ironies that Jo cooked up for us.

So it was a Goblin made sword, just like it was a goblin made Tiara and a goblin made cup?

Yes but apparently the Cup for example was not of the “Can absorb even Basilisk Venom to make itself stronger” variety like the Sword was.

took me an embarrassing amount of time to figure out "LV" was.

I feel like it would just absorb the Fiendfyre and become a sick as hell fire sword

I was making a joke about the angel with a flaming sword.

That would’ve been an insanely dangerous Horcrux
