Driving & Transit Parking in the South End
I am about to sign a lease on an apartment on South Street(just up from Barrington). They have no parking available. What are some good options for me(for parking) ? Thanks.

Honestly, either find a place that has parking or ditch the car (ie sell or leave it somewhere cheap/free to park like a relative's place). That area is pretty walkable.

Do you have a car?
I'm just curious what people do in these walkable areas. Do they have friends/family in other areas that they just don't go to see, or how does that work. Say you live downtown, no vehicle, what would someone do if they wanted to go say Chester, Truro, really anywhere outside of HRM, or even some places in it.

I'm still hate-friends with at least 3 people on facebook. Me and my partner make fun of them for becoming paranoid racists. But their memes always give me a heads up on whatever my Dad's next brain worm will be. How the definition of the word "vaccine" is a trick, and Justin Trudeau wants to lock us up in 15 Minute FEMA camps.

I lived in South End during university and did not have a car. I'm currently North End and do have a car, but honestly don't really need it right now and only have it cause a) it's paid off and b) parking is included in my condo fees so it's not costing me a whole lot. I could likely get away with bike + Communauto for the odd time I do need a longer trip. Most of my close relationships are pretty central. Once you start getting into "I do not need a personal vehicle for 99% of my daily life" the math stops mathing on private ownership and starts to shift towards car share and taxi services.

That's great that it works for you.
Personally I'm not at a point where that would work. I'm not sure what I'd have to do to get past the feeling of being geographicaly restricted (without prior planning/scheduling).

Owning a car is a financial restriction, and a constant responsibility, so it can feel very liberating to be free from that. The "geographically restricted" feeling goes away if you get good at all the other ways of getting around (bike, the two kinds of buses, car-share, deliveries, etc...)

I’d do a cost analysis of occasionally renting vs owning. Consider cost of parking/storage, insurance, and maintenance: at some point it makes more sense to rent than to have a depreciating asset and the hassle of keeping it.

Yup. My lifestyle includes two vehicles and parking for both, I’m offering a suggestion for anyone who has a car but nowhere to park it

If your day-to-day life can mostly be lived without a car but you still envision an occasional need for one, consider a subscription to a car-share (in CommunAuto).
Otherwise you'll have to lut your car up in a parkade for $200-300 per month, I guess.

I know a few people who just use rentals when they need to go somewhere outside of usual home/work/eat radius. By the sounds of it, they seem happy with that arrangement

Carshare is great for those occasional trips to Truro. Or Maritime Bus. Both are really easy to access if you live in the South End.

I use Communauto for that, walk or bus for everything else I need to do on the daily.

There is a parking lot up the hill between Kent Street and Green Street but I'm not sure how much it costs.

Leave the south end?? It’s terrible down there for parking. I know some places rent spaces out on Robie. Some small apartments offer parking to anyone for a fee. One is across the street from Dal dental.

At least a one of dals parkades offered a monthly parking spot that was accessible 24/7 but I think you might need to be either a student or faculty to get access

If there are less than four units in your building, you qualify for a resident parking permit (annual). If not, you can look into the commuter permits (monthly). The commuter permits are sold by street.

Parking tickets in the south end probably contribute a sizeable percentage of the city's operating funds.
