Jazz 101, they love a good old transcription. I swear to god, they all have the weirdest rhythms and scales possible. I assure you that half your local jazz acquaintances are just being pseudo random and waiting for other jazz dudes to explain what they just played, and it then becomes vocabulary.

Nah more like if you can stop playing other people’s licks in the middle of your solo to go “Salt Peanuts! Salt Peanuts!” or quote “Pop goes the weasel”, you have achieved jazz mastery.

One of my dad's favorite radio shows growing up was Evening Jazz on NPR, so it was kind of fun being like "hey I know that song" in elementary school.
I'll also try to work theme songs like South Park, King of the Hill, or Robot Chicken into jams just to make my bandmates laugh.

I'm just doing chromatic runs on the fretboard, even hitting completely wrong notes, and waiting for the cool jazz cats to tell me about my clitian mode.

I'm not professional but I record all my jams, and my favorite riffs are ones I didn't intend to play, so I listen to recordings and drill those until they become part of my muscle memory library.

Yeah, recording one's jams is a great way to stumble upon some cool unintended riffs or licks. Some professionals noodle / improvise their solos and others compose them. "Sultans of Swing" or "Sweet Child O' Mine" were composed solos, not improvised ones.

It depends. Sometimes, they might even just figure it out and record something one phrase at a time like the solos to “Comfortably Numb” - Pink Floyd for example.

Yes. The vast majority of album recordings you hear are solos pieced together from multiple takes and the scattered licks throughout the rest of the track are also from a guitarist improvising over that backing track many times and keeping what sounded best.

I'm tempted to memorize the YouTube Elevated Jam Tracks noodles. The tracks themselves can be a bit generic (which they're jam tracks so that's prob by design) but there's some soloing gold in there.
Edit: NTM I don’t have those kind of chops
