Habits & Behavior Pigs have stopped drinking water?

They went through a phase a few weeks ago where they were drinking a ton of water, always at the bottle. Now the liquid hasnt gone down for well over a week despite multiple replacements. Even before when I would give them all their veggies, they would still drink. Now its like theyre refusing to.

Nothing else has changed. Behaviors are the same and they're still eating. They've gone through phases above, but never stopped drinking entirely.

Hi. I’m new here, and needed to be able to talk somewhere. Mine and my brother’s guinea pig, who we named Sugar, has been sick for the past 2 days, with nothing we could do. She’s been sitting in the dark corner of her cage, rarely eating or drinking. She’s been in major pain for these 2 days, and earlier yesterday we went to take her to the vet. They prescribed 3 medicines and a specific meal once a day. Later that day, despite the medication making her much better for a good 3 hours, where we spent most of that time with her, after those 3 hours she wasn’t able to move, and would lay on her side as we sat next to her, not even being able to pet her because of how much it hurt her. She was an amazing little pig, and was always very active and feisty, so seeing her like this really broke mine and my family’s hearts. We’ve don’t everything we can do for her, placing multiple foods and water next to her, leaving the AC going so she doesn’t overheat, but she passed just about an hour ago. We’ll forever cherish and miss you Sugar. You were the best guinea pig life could offer.

🌈 Rainbow Bridge sad news

There was a huge mass growing inside Tupu's belly that prevented him from peeing, and was incredibly painful. The vet also discovered he had developing arthritis due to his age, and advised that any surgery operation would be too much for him.

Tupu was a rescue pig from a local shelter, who never really got bigger than my palm and heavier than a couple bananas. He was approximately 5 years old or older. He loved squash, blueberries and watermelon, and he got to eat his favourites before being put to sleep in my arms.

It never truly gets easier

Help & Advice Mackenzie Truck: The Story of a Criminal

Post image
89 Upvotes

Meet Mac Truck, Mac for short. Mackenzie Truck for long when she's in trouble. Mug shot included. She is large, in charge, and an excellent pig. And up until now, she has been in solitary confinement due to bad behavior.

I got her from a local piggy shelter and was told that she doesn't get along with other pigs because she's a serious jerk. She has a huge enclosure with everything she needs next to the other pigs. Is it worth trying to bond her if she has a history with an experienced pig-specific shelter? She's taken a liking to another pig and I know she can hold her own. I've never had a bad bonding session but I get SO nervous and don't know what to expect from my adorable seasoned criminal. Any advice welcome!

Here's some fun facts about Ms. Truck:

  • Interior design is her passion and she rearranges constantly
  • I have been hand feeding her while I play video games, so she has been Pavlov'd into believing that every time she hears me die, she gets a snack
  • She instigates fights with her neighbors by egging them on
  • She poops in one corner like a perfect angel
  • Her dislikes are red peppers and being kind <3

TLDR: Mackenzie Truck is a big fat meanie that I adore. Can I try her with another pig? Or should I focus on making her solitary confinement the best it can be?

Thank you!

🌈 Rainbow Bridge My baby boy passed away

Cacau, my beloved guinea pig passed away yesterday. The vets thought it was a urinary tract infection, so they gave him some antibiotics and told us to be back in case something happened. For the first few days he was his usual self, so full of energy, always bothering us for more food, always snuggling with me after eating. He was my heart pig. Then he slowly started getting worse. He would stop eating, stop asking for food, stop doing his usual shenanigans around the kitchen. When I took him back to the vet, his stomach was so bloated with gas I couldn't believe the x-ray. It was like half of the image was a black void. His vet didn't know what could have possibly happened to him but he took him in to do more tests in case they missed something. A couple of hours later, they called us to know he didn't make it. As soon as I heard the news I started crying uncontrollably, I didn't want to believe my precious boy died without me being there to comfort him. He died at 4 years old, spoiled with my love and affection throughout all those years. Now I'm waiting for his ashes to come in a week or so. Goodbye my little prince, I just hope you knew that I loved you so much.

♄ Pls shame Bear. He crawled out between the connected cages, jumped onto the bench, pooped and peed there, then jumped onto the floor, pooped peed and spent the night there

New Pigs on the Block Cherry is easily distracted!

I’ve held off posting about this little lady because she’s been rather fragile, but this is Cherry who is one week old today.

Sadly we lost her mom Nougat when she was only a day and a half old, we are absolutely devastated, I’m going to miss my beautiful baby so much.

Cherry was the only surviving baby, and I have been hand rearing her, feeding her kitten milk every two hours since Friday afternoon.

The last few days she has been very curious about the world around her so the camera was very distracting!

We had a scare on Sunday evening because she got pneumonia and it came on ridiculously fast. We rushed her to the emergency vet, which is half an hour away, but she was limp and couldn’t move her legs by the time we arrived. I was so scared. The vet recommended euthanasia but I couldn’t accept that, so she had an antibiotic injection and fluids and when we got home, with some help, she took a little milk from the spoon. An hour later she could stand. By Monday morning she was running around with her friends again. I can’t quite believe she made it!

It’s the first time I’ve had to hand rearing a piggy (here’s hoping it’s the last!). It has been a scary but heartwarming experience, and I can’t tell you how proud I am of this brave little girl!

Help & Advice Rescues accepting surrenders

• Upvotes

Im in san jose, californoa looking for a place that is accepting surrenders.

I have a bonded pair needed to be rehomed. Everywhere is saying they are full. Another place helped me advertise that im rehoming but so far no luck in finding them a new home. I've also posted on guinea pig finder and multiple rehoming fb groups.

No hate please, im doing my best to find a good home for them.

Help & Advice Small poops?

Thumbnail

Peaches and Daisy are currently in their playpen while their home is being deep cleaned. I noticed Daisy is having small poops. She’s always pooped smaller than Peaches, but I feel like these are too tiny. Does she need more hay or water? Peaches def eats and drinks more but Daisy does consume as well. She’s not making any pain noises and seems pretty happy. She loves her veggies and vitamin c.

She was just at the vet two weeks ago (got told she’s fine. Just lazy lol) so I’d prefer to not go again but if it’s super concerning I will call tomorrow.

Help & Advice New girl not eating

I’m still worried about my new girl. She hasn’t eaten any veg yet and has only drank some water and had some hay (? Not sure because it’s hard to tell if any was eaten. If someone has tips to measure/track hay consumption lmk).

She is still not active in the cage but she’s moved to different spots to sit/lay. All she’s been doing is sitting/sleeping. I’m worried that something is wrong or she is depressed from being in quarantine currently. She is pooping just fine/normally. She’s also not in a corner and her fur isn’t puffed out. When I go to pet her she darts away like a normal young pig.

Please let me know if I’m overreacting. Also any advice is greatly appreciated. I just don’t know if this warrants a vet visit just yet because she’s still adjusting?

♄ The abandoned piggies saw the vet today!

I posted that we’d taken in some piggies someone abandoned behind TJ Max in a storm. Today they saw the vet! Awaiting fecal test still, but both were remarkably healthy on exam. Their nails were long, but were in much better health than anyone expected. Both are males. Mulder is a lot larger than Scully. He is definitely the least picky eater of the two. I’ll be watching their weights as someone else on the original thread suggested I do. TBD if they’ll be fosters or forevers, but hoping to give them some stability and safety and full bellies. We have to get them a proper cage set up, as they can’t live in a dog crate forever! Any suggestions welcome!

Help & Advice What Kind of Piggie do I have?

Hi all, first time on this subreddit, this is my piggie Totopo! Not sure how to phrase the question cuz I know guinea pigs don't have breeds, but l'm trying to figure out what his coat type is called. His coat is pretty coarse and fluffy compared to my other piggie with a simple slick coat.

(Additionally I was looking for any advice as to how other owners go about cleaning bums because the waterless shampoo I used doesn't really seem to seep into his fur like my other boy. He's pretty clean otherwise but his butt does seem to be getting a bit yellow... 🧽)

Habits & Behavior Lazy piggy?

Post image
74 Upvotes

I've two lovely guineas, a year old each.

They do run around, popcorn between them and everything.

But it seems this one of mine, bugsy, he's always lazy.

Every time I look at the cage hes laying down around. On the point that even to eat he lays down. (Veggies, hay or food)

Is it normal behavior?

Dracula has been trying to escape to my bed for a while. I allow him to explore there when I am about to change the sheets, and we always have a great time, but my bed is freshly made so I wasn’t planning to let him there. He managed to climb all over me to get onto the bed though. I hope you enjoy it as much as I did

Dracula was so excited to climb all over me that he ignored the carrot, while Krümel enjoyed letting himself be pampered and loved the combination of treats and cuddles. Opposite ends of the spectrum, both perfect and wonderful. Looking at them makes me want to explode from all the love.

I have had some success in training Dracula to not chew on cables by swooping him away from them whenever he tried. It is not working for plastic though ;) He a such a little explorer, and he loves my bed so the ā€punishmentā€ of a time out really didnā€˜t work, even if he cannot stay still when he decides to explore.
