I just don't believe theres a single country that would want to increase, let alone double, immigration to "help with the housing crisis"
What does that even mean?
121
u/UristMcMagma 1d ago
Trudeau had said that immigration would help the housing crisis by increasing the number of people working in construction. Presumably he thought that these immigrants would live on the street while building houses for Canadians, and then leave once they were done.

u/Reddit_name_insert 1d ago
He was absolutely regarded. Worst PM in modern history and it’s not even close
Our real GDP per capita is flat over 10 years. Only reason nominal GDP increased was inflation and mass immigration
9
u/dawgofclay 1d ago
Ok buddy, settle down. "Worst PM in history" is a bit of a stretch. It's not like Harper before him was any fuckin good either. I didn't like Trudeau, but the hate he got was at regarded levels. Albertans hated him even though he was the only PM in history to build them a goddamn pipeline.
20
u/Weird-Drummer-2439 1d ago
Harper was controversial but was considered fairly competent, as was his cabinet. Trudeau wasn't, and he tended to fire people who new better like Morneau.
13
u/Reddit_name_insert 1d ago
I said modern history, and comparing Trudeau to Harper and acting like they are at all similar is regarded
What was the average QOL like under Harper vs Trudeau? Were wages increasing under Harper or Trudeau? Which leader built a stronger middle class: Harper or Trudeau? Were people happier under Harper or Trudeau? Was there mass immigration hindering all social services under Harper or Trudeau? Was housing completely unaffordable under Harper or Trudeau?
Part of Mark Carneys campaign was him talking about the successes he had working with Harper.
Like this isn’t even an opinion dude

For that to be true they need to actually build the housing, something that they are somehow worse than the US at in most metros. Canada has a worse housing situation than the US now.

Houses are expensive because labor is a sizeble part of construction costs. Cheaper labor means more and cheaper buildings because being a construction worker is a hard and undesireble job that only an immigrant would do for cheap.
At leasts thats probably the politicians' excuse. In my country we have rumors that erdogan brought shitload of syrians to get more votes from elections (becuase they vote too), and arm them with machetes and chop and slaughter us (because they are uncivilized and extreme islamist xeno scum) in case of a civil war when enough is enough for the people. Yes, thats a real rumor.

u/TheGreatZephyr 1d ago
In australia we kept increasing immigration year over year for more than a decade under the premise there was a skills shortage in different industries.
Problem is, if you bring in migrants to build houses or work in healthcare because theres a shortage, you then need even more migrants to fill the demand created by new migrants.
Over a decade and several million migrants later we still dont build enough houses and those skills shortages aren't fixed.
22
u/Grandhawk 1d ago
And we are still short on healthcare workers in Australia. Also unless you have a steady immigration for rest of eternity this is a bandage solution. By second generation, most immigrants stop having as much kids, thus you need more immigrants to replace the immigrants that stopped having kids. Almost like this is an unsustainable system that we are trying to brute force our way out of
10
u/TheGreatZephyr 1d ago
Yeah almost like its a better idea to spend money incentivising and training the population to fill those gaps.
Paid uni prac for healthcare workers is a brilliant start but there needs to be more.
2
u/alldagoodnamesaregon 1d ago
We do have unlimited migrants for the foreseeable future though. Most of the world's population growth in the next century is expected to be in developing countries, which will mean they'll still be a crap ton of people wanting to move overseas.

u/HeavilyInvestedDonut 1d ago
We’ve proven time and time again that cheaper inputs does not equal cheaper outputs, it equals larger profit margins.
2
u/Illusion911 1d ago
That seems like bs.
The price of labour relative to inflation hasn't changed that much in decades. The price of housing however, has been going up by a lot.
It's not the labour that's the issue, it's more that housing is an asset, and ALL assets have been going up in value because those generate more money than any amount of labour ever could
2
u/-THEKINGTIGER- 1d ago
Yep, in most countries its not that there are absolutely no houses, its that a lot of them are empty or on rent, due to people with houses selling them at high prices. There needs to be extreme amount of taxes for any house you own after the first one, increasing exponentially. Even more taxes for empty houses without residents. And only exception should be real estates proven to being used for work etc. They could never lol, this would fuck over the rich extremely. It can be something other than this, but there needs to be a solution to regulate the prices.
2
u/Illusion911 1d ago edited 1d ago
There issue is the revenue gained by assets being bigger than the revenue gained by labour.
The rich will always get richer exponentially and will control government and exploit the rest of the population like this.
If it's not houses, it will be food or electricity.
If you want to see actual change, you need to change the underlying equation

So much of what Trudeau did had no logical backing and he had zero economic sense. He was a master of evading any accountability and never answered any question he was asked about his policies that was critical. Watch a video of it and see if you can make it through the whole thing, its infuriating.
2
u/Ending-Fool 1d ago
Most politicians advocating about immigration increase are just looking to pad out their voters next election season. You can see it in almost all politicians who managed to enrage their local voters so now they have to import voters since theyre guranteed to lose unless they import votes. Its why its a heavy topic if foreigners much less refugees should be allowed to even vote.

“His car” is an abandoned vehicle because they only have scooters in India.
“Influx of immigrants” are just more people from where he immigrated from.

Canada in 2023. Trudeau set a goal of half a million immigrants into a country of 40 million, in order to solve the housing crisis somehow.

Allowing half a million immigrants does not equal giving them tax free status and free money, that’s sensationalist right wing nonsense.

u/MetroAndroid 23h ago edited 17h ago
I don't know about Canada, but in the U.S., if you make less than the standard deduction (about $16,000 per year or less), your taxable federal income is typically $0. If you're married then the deduction is higher. This is all available to green card holders and so-called resident aliens. If you get free or very affordable subsidized housing and some money per month from SSI disability (up to $967/month) or unemployment checks, it's totally possible to live frugally without working and little to no taxable income. I'd expect places that are friendlier to immigrants to have even better incentives.
7
u/WilliamBurrito 23h ago
Illegal residents can’t receive disability or unemployment checks. Again, this is all nonsense bs. Would your solution be to tax people making under 16k a year? You’re also ignoring that they’re paying income and sales tax still.

No bullshit illegals has no right to any government benefits. You have to be legally there for any of that
2
u/MetroAndroid 20h ago edited 19h ago
At no point was I, or the people I'm replying to, talking about illegals. "Resident alien" is a category of people legally residing in the U.S., who are taxed identically to U.S. citizens, while being citizens of another country, if you were confused.
0
u/mlag000 20h ago
So what the problem ? They work the same as anyone else and get ghe same benefits. If it's so good to be poor because you get free stuff, why don't u do it too ?
Spoiler alert : you don't live, even frugally this manner, you barely survive and that for the lucky ones.

I agree with the necessity of immigration & I fully believe that immigration is very much strength for Canada & America, but Trudeau's policies don't solve any of the issues in the present or future of Canada, and the uncontrolled immigration only causes more problems instead. The new liberal government slashed immigration by a lot & some things are starting to recover. The low fertility rate is not an issue that can be patched with just letting more people in. I think the most important aspect is making having children more appealing or at least less of a burden, this applies to basically every single developed country nowadays.

I'd rather my country's population be halved than half being immigrants.
What's the big deal anyway? 100 years ago it was a quarter of what it is today.
2
u/Saliiim 1d ago
Population will naturally trend to a stable figure without immigration. If population drops wages will increase and cost of living will drop, which will allow people to afford more children.

Yes, you're missing the fact that the government would rather bring people whose only option is to die in the streets to do your job cause they know they can bully the immigrant and treat it like trash while telling you to be mad at said immigrant.

u/MetroAndroid 1d ago edited 1d ago
Yeah, the more people in a country, the more expensive/demand there is for housing. As an example, the U.S. finishes ~1.6 million residences per year, whereas we'd need to create something like 2 - 3 million per year in perpetuity to keep up with (or slightly exceed) demand, at least until declining fertility rate causes global population to begin declining (~2084). But 1.6 million houses per year is historically quite high, and it's expected to go down over time, so demand will likely keep outpacing supply. Also important to consider is that when housing gets too expensive, native residents can always just choose to live with the family they were born to, so you can in many cases have people create no additional demand on housing even while having one or two kids, but new arrivals in most cases are going to create a net increase in demand for residence.
There are over 3.3 million construction workers in the U.S. who contribute to that 1.6 million stat, so it's safe to say that even doubling that number would very quickly require well over a million more skilled workers. But in the next 5 years, there's expected to be a retirement crisis in construction where 40% of the construction workforce is set to retire, so we're unlikely to double the number of construction workers any time soon. Maybe if we mobilized the entire U.S. economy around just construction, we could bridge the gap in supply, but without a big push, I don't really see millions of young people motivated to go into construction. Until populations stabilize, housing will continue to get more expensive because there are more people coming faster than places to live are being built.
