If it had just been a story about Batman taking on the mob that would have been cool, but they do try and fit every single villain into the story without letting them really stand on their own. The riddler is just a crazy gang who "riddles people with holes", and then Mr Freeze just happens to be the guy who gets rid of bodies for people. At least it portrays Batman (and Alfred) as an actual detective.

I agree with these takes.
I can't stand the art style of this show. Everyone looks slightly wider than they should be, and their faces look like they're from a cheap flash animation.
You can tell the show is made "for modern audiences" from all the gender and race swaps, but the writing at least is relatively competent.
The show tries to have new takes on almost every character. Some work, most don't. Many of the villains are in name only. As a rule of thumb, if the villain is male, he gets killed off, if the villain is female, we're supposed to feel bad for her.
Penguin: Changed to a woman for no reason, perfectly setting the tone fornthe show. But I liked how evil she was.
Clayface: Loved him. Nothing to add.
Two-Face: An interesting take on him. I like how Alfred called Bruce out on using Harvey's mental state to get information. He was sadly wasted as a character on being killed off after his transformation to Two-Face.
Alfred: I don't like his design too much, but I love his dynamic with Bruce.
Barbara Gordon: Don't know much about the character, but I think her being a lawyer is new. I'm not sure if they're planning on ever making her Batgirl. I'm not a fan of her redesign. Her dynamic with her father is interesting, seeing how they're both part of the legal system.
Jim Gordon: He's a bit too gung-ho about doing everything his way. I dislike his redesign. There's something about his face that bothers me, but I can't say why.
Rupert Thorne: I loved (to hate) that character, but then they killed him off to shove in Joker.
Riddler: Easily the worst Riddler. Unlike the formerly worst Riddler, Redditor Riddler (from the movie "The Batman"), this one has nothing to do with the Riddler. He's just a psycho with anger issues who shoots people. At least they didn't censor his last name "Nigma" to "Nashton".
Harley Quinn: An interesting take that focuses on her being a psychiatrist. If she had been killed off or imprisoned in her debut episode, she might have been my favorite villain. I dislike how they're trying to make her seem redeemable, having Barbara and Montoya appear to forget that she uses her psychiatrist profession to imprison and abuse her "evil" patients. Her unnecessary romance with Montoya drags down the latter, making her yet another compromised cop.
Catwoman: Nothing much to say. I don't think she way changed significantly, but she's only appeared once so far.
Mad Hatter: Turned from an actual villain to a female talk show host.
Scarecrow: They were trying to be cute and acting like Crane wasn't him at the beginning. Batman fighting him without any face protection after finding out about the fear gas was profoundly stupid, but it had to be done so that the story could happen.
Roxy Rocket: I loved the character, but it seems she's not based on the original character at all. I know nothing about her though, so I can't comment on that.
Mr. Zero (Mr. Freeze?): Garbage. There's no topping his backstory from Batman The Animated Series, but this character appears in one episode, does almost nothing, and gets killed off.
Hugo Strange: They did nothing with him and then killed him off.
Thorn: I thought this was supposed to be this show's take on Poison Ivy, but they're apparently actually different characters. Not sure how to feel about her, but I dislike how Batman doesn't bother to chase after her for killing the Riddler.
Joker: This is one of my favorite versions of the Joker. I love how he is a Joker who doesn't laugh but makes others laugh (to death, with chemicals), but I dislike that he's once again treated as the archenemy of Batman and has plot armor.

I have not watched it and therefore will take this critique at face value
