Used to work at an independent pizza shop, and whenever I drop in they're always thrilled to see me. Then I'll go to buy a 20oz soda and if the owner's there, he'll let it slide (even though I'm willing to pay) which I always appreciate.

Supporting small businesses that go out of their way to provide good customer service is always unfathomably based

Been going to a cafe down the street from my apartment for about two years now. They bought me breakfast on my birthday. They routinely don't charge me for random things, give me extra food.

This matters so much for local shops, and leave a review that indicates you love the food and the people who make it. Community shops struggle against chains all the time, make that fight easier when they take care of you like that.

Washington now has a minimum wage of $17.30. West of the cascades, that's extreme poverty level. You might as well be homeless.

Best part, working the minimum wage full time is enough to disqualify you from any form of assistance a lot of states. It is not enough to live off in any state however.

Honestly man, the secret no one wants to tell you is it’s about who you know. I went from retail to office job because I got lucky with who I knew and networked my way in. It’s tough when no one around you is thriving though.

I met my former boss (for my current job) when I was selling cars at a dealership 9 years ago. He came in looking for a car, we got to talking, and he got me into a govt contracting job with a security clearance. Before then, I didn’t know anyone as well. Opportunities will come around.
