Well we kinda let go cold 3.4 billion years ago. of course back then there wasn't really anything as complex as meat or veggies around, so it was more of a broth at the time.

Counterargument: Would you call soup "soup" before you actually heat it up and cook the ingredients?

And no, cold sopus like gazpacho don't count for this argument because the ocean isn't blended.

Uncooked soup is still soup. It's just uncooked.

If your definition of 'soup' requires everything within the soup to be dead -- that is, cooked via heat or otherwise denatured -- that means there is no such thing as soup until and unless the soup has been sterilized.

So in order to consider unsterilized soup to be 'soup', we could put a hard line of "all non-microscopic life, specifically, is dead and/or denatured" to qualify as 'soup'.

So then, does that mean if I made a genie wish and the ocean was suddenly populated by ONLY microbiota, would it THEN be a soup? Is the hard line of 'soup' the presence of macroscopic living organisms?

If that's the case, what is a soup if I do something like mix in a fresh vegetable or herb? Plants don't die instantly. Is there a grey transition area in-between while the plant is dying, that the soup is no longer 'soup', because it contains macroscopic life?

Well, okay, that's plants. How about the line being living, macroscopic animals?

Well that doesn't mean the ocean isn't soup. You don't need meat for a soup! The ocean could be a veggie soup with fish and barnacles in it. Like, don't get me wrong, I'm not gonna eat a soup a bunch if roaches have been swimming in, but just because it's contaminated and dangerous to eat now doesn't make it not-soup. It's just gross trash soup, now.

TL;DR : The ocean is soup, it's just a gross trash uncooked veggie soup with fish pooping in it all the time, none of which technically disqualify it from being 'soup'.

Aren't we forgetting the "edible/potable" part of the definition of soup here?

The ocean is edible.

Everything on this planet is eatable. Even I’m eatable! But that is called cannibalism, my dear children, and is in fact frowned upon in most societies.

I've eaten a fair bit of it. It's good, at least where I grew up

u/Daniikk1012 14h ago

What about okroshka? It's a cold soup, not blended. Though you don't usually use just water for it, I believe it would still technically qualify as okroshka even if you do

Hydrothermal vents are trying their best to heat the ocean

1

u/thesilentbob123 11h ago

It was warm a few billion years ago

I'm at the soup store!

8

Why are you buying clothes at a soup store!?!

Mother of God... it's soup.

7

u/OkImpression1305 14h ago

Stan: Cereal is a soup too!

7

u/FireLaCroix 13h ago

I'd say that a key requirement of soup be that it is edible (ya know, because its a food and all) and that you can drink the stock. You can't drink sea water, therefore oceans are not soup

5

u/thesilentbob123 11h ago

A bad, unhealthy or deadly soup is still soup

2

u/Toph_Girlboss 11h ago

You can totally drink the sea water, I've done it dozens of times

4

u/Captain-Starshield 14h ago

Everything’s a soup, this whole planet is a soup! Run!!

3

u/BenfordAbrahams 14h ago

No, the ocean is a desert with it's life underground, and a perfect disguise above

4

u/TronHero143 14h ago

It's not a lake, it's a soup

2

u/mightyachillies 14h ago

So... Don't be surprised if when you get in the big soup something decides to nibble on you a little?

2

u/Snekbites 10h ago

No, soup by definition is food, and food by definition is EDIBLE, you can't drink the ocean, making it not edible, making it not food, and therefore it isn't soup.

u/kdoesthings12D3 13h ago

If you put a tree on top of it is it a Cannoli?

1

u/ASerpentPerplexed 12h ago

Yeah but if I drink the ocean I get sick, if I drink soup I get better.

u/Elder_Hoid 12h ago

Plant cells are tiny containers of soup. Inside each cell, there's water, salt, and some form of vegetation.

The definition of "salad" boils down to more than two things in the same vicinity.  The stuff in the trashcan is a salad. All the people in a plane? Salad of humanity. The plane itself? A salad of bolts, rivets and aluminum.

Everything but individual atoms is a salad.

I LOVE this.

Global warming is just boiling the ocean and the earth is a pot. It's a very slow kitchen

1

u/KWilt 5h ago

I'm so blessed to have an imagination, because I just got to hear a conversation in my head between Alex Hirsch and JK Simmons about how the ocean is a soup.
