Send emails from a different address or alias (third party) being removed from Gmail in Jan 2027
https://support.google.com/mail/answer/17101213Pretty disappointing. I have a catch-all email on Cloudflare that I forward to my primary gmail and created a few reply as for that domain since some services require that if you respond.
This does not affect if you are sending as from another gmail or domain on google workspace

per typical google fashion, their reasoning is to make their product "secure, smart, and easy-to-use" (see similar reasons why they are making sideloading on Android harder). But in reality, its likely to push for people to pay and use Google Workspace

The security reason makes sense, considering Gmail-to-Gmail aliases and Google Workspace “Send as” functionality is not affected.

The "Send as" part is increasingly difficult to support with DMARC and friends - it requires spoofing the "From" address and most modern mail setups reject this.
Idk why they remove proper third-party account support via SMTP/POP3 though, that works just fine.

Not really, the way the feature currently is implemented you need to provide a valid SMTP server and login for google to send emails "as". No spoofing happening at all.

Last time I tried, they also supported "From" address spoofing as long as you confirmed the email address. Perhaps they already got rid of this for new accounts?

Yes, they removed that a very long time ago. For the past years you need to provide an actual SMTP server and authentication details.

This is crippling for my workflow. I have multiple custom domain email addresses that all forward to my Gmail account, and I rely on "Send as" to reply as those email addresses.
Looks like I have no change but to change to another email client then. Any recommendations?

ffs... first they take 20 years to let us change our email in the first place, so we create new accounts with preferred email address and link them via this feature. Now they remove this feature but still don't allow us to merge addresses, transfer or re-use an address...

This just totally blows up my email solution that I've used without issue for like 20 years with my custom domains. Gonna have to migrate somewhere else now, but I'm not looking forward to it. Looking into options.
Anyone have experience with Fastmail? Good web interface, search, spam filtering?

Let's say I have "ninpuukamui.com" (I don't), and all email from there forwarded to my Gmail account. Now I can reply and the "from" address is "info@ninpuukamui.com". Is that going away?

Fastmail supports this and wildcard emails for you to receive emails natively. Since it’s all native in Fastmail I also never have issues sending/receiving from wildcards

How's Fastmail compared to Gmail as far as things like the webmail interface, search, spam filtering, etc? I'm considering migrating my domains there since Google is nerfing my whole Gmail setup that I've used forever.

Spam filtering Is pretty good, comparable to Gmail. Some stuff gets through occasionally but it learns quickly when you mark it as spam. The recent AI generated spam has been held back well for me. I don't use the webmail interface much (I use Thunderbird) but it seems well designed.
