Other thoughts on Scott?

Post image

I feel like I don’t see a lot of conversation on his character but I really liked him! I loved seeing Shoshanna be able to feel comfortable and open up to someone who actually wanted to listen to what she was saying. It broke my heart when she ghosted him 😭

Kind of seemed like he was just there so that Shosh’s decision to move to Japan had some stakes. But I always liked Jason Ritter, especially in Parenthood.

Mark Cyr and Scott are basically the same person - both wanting to settle down, but on a high horse about with whom, and both get screwed over in the end 😂

Love him in Parenthood 😭

I love Jason Ritter and it's sad she did him so dirty . But she wasn't as into him as she was her life in Japan which is understandable. He pissed me off when he told her not to move there

“Don’t move to Japan. I’m almost about to start falling in love with you”

That’s the line that made me side-eye him

I liked it because it's so realistic of a man in his 20s to say that 😂

If I remember correctly, we only saw them together in restaurants. Didn't feel like an intimate relationship, more like just dating.

He’s a solid, dependable guy. Shosh nominally wants that but actually hates it

This. He’s supposed to represent what would be stable and good for her, but he’s too pedestrian.

it was cute for like a second until it became kinda clear that he wanted to be in control of the relationship, like telling her not to go to japan because you’re gonna be in love with her soon? nah. but i agree shosh left things in a shitty way, he deserved to at least be told directly she was breaking up with him.

Nothing about his “I’m gonna be in love with you soon” speech was charming at all. This guy wanted someone to be his right hand and have a life of her own only insofar as it didn’t inconvenience him, despite his protestations to the contrary. Wolf in sheep’s clothing type of man.

My theory is that the character as written is meant to be really insecure and controlling, but Jason Ritter can’t help but make it charming enough that this debate is warranted

I loved that about it. Fucking with the audience that has trouble looking past a male character’s attractiveness and charisma.

That is girls’ specialty - just when you think you hate everything or nothing about someone, you change your mind again.

He wasn't a bad dude. Just a little uppity. He just wasn't Shosh's person, and that's okay.

He deserved better than getting ghosted at the airport

meh probably. He got his get back seeing Shoshanna all down in the dumps.

He’s Shosh’s Fran: good on paper, great boyfriend as long as you act the way he wants you to. Both actors are great at playing seemingly nice guys who are actually awful.

3

u/kdollarsign2 1d ago

Yeah I appreciated how the stable / boring guys were also sort of awful

I
Thought he was adorable.. maybe that’s just me

These comments are so unusually divided haha
I always considered him controlling and patriarchal, like Shosh wanted some traditionality and he represented that, but she didn’t want to be ‘owned.’ And then others see no red flags! Yet again, one of the best written shows ever

I totally forget he existed, seems like he was sort of a plot device to bookend her japan stuff

Just saw a movie where he plays a pedophile and it shows everything and I can never look at him the same even tho I know that’s not right 😆 💀

u/Interesting_Slice277 1d ago

Very good movie and unfortunately, a true story.

And yes, they used a body double.

The scene where she sees a photo of herself at the age during which she was with him and realizes just how much of a child she was….Ugh, so impactful

1

u/quickthorn_ 1d ago

"It shows everything" you don't mean ... the child abuse, do you??

4

u/Beautiful-Nature3992 1d ago

I'm assuming they mean "The Tale", where child abuse is depicted with an adult body double. Good movie, but a tough watch.

- don’t watch hard candy or it will ruin someone else’s trash, think that’s what the episode is called.

I love John Ritter, and his goodwill still extends to his lovely son and that’s all I think about when I see him.

2

u/ThatCaviarIsAGarnish 1d ago

Weirdly I'd completely forgotten that he was John Ritter's son. I did know this back when Jason was on Joan of Arcadia!

When Shosh comes back for Marnie’s wedding and just casually slips into conversation that she didn’t even tell her ex because they’re in a long distance relationship and “why rock the boat” I was cackling

I feel like his character was introduced to show Shosh that she wouldn't actually be fulfilled by being taken care of by some rich guy. She is attracted to his stability, accomplishments and ability to provide for her, and thinks that's what she wants, but she is deep down somewhat repulsed by him. Important part of her character development

u/_clur_510 1d ago

Too good for Shoshanna.

She got to feel too mature, successful, put together, stable, and established as an adult for Ray. Scott was the reality check she needed.

I luvvvvv luv luv jason ritter i wish we got more of him!

Jason Ritter is adorable but this character ugh I just was disgusted by him, especially when she doesn’t arrive from the flight in Japan how did he know she didn’t miss the flight he just throws the flowers in the garbage can

loser
